2. • We created this questionnaire so that we could find out what are potential audience like
to see in music videos and what would attract them. This means we can make our music
video attractive to them resulting in it being successful.
WHY?
HOW?
WHERE?
• I created the questionnaire on my Google Drive. I added picture's and video links to the
questionnaire, through the options settings, to support my questions.
• I shared the questionnaire on my Facebook with my friend's as I knew they would be
willing to answer the questionnaire. However, as
I wasn’t controlling what gender's and ages
answered it meaning my results won’t be
accurate for our targeted audience’s preferences.
3. WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?
The most popular response was “Female”. I was hoping for there to be an
equal amount of males and females to answer it as we will probably be
targeting both genders with our video.
We shall take this into consideration when we look at the rest of the answers
as some may be affected by the female’s opinions.
4. WHAT IS YOUR AGE?
The most popular response was “16-20”. This is the result we were hoping for
as this is the age group we wanted to aim at when we make our own video.
This will affect the rest of the results of the questionnaire and will be the age
we target with our video.
5. WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?
The most popular response was “Unemployed”. This is the result we were
expecting as those that are interested in music videos are usually younger
meaning they are still in education. This will affect where we advertise our
magazine and how. We will have to take the focus away from the price with
the digi-pack and give them a form of escapism in the video as their current
day to day life won’t be that exciting.
6. WHAT IS YOUR ETHNICITY?
The most popular response was “White”. This result is conclusive as
stereotypically dubstep music (our desired genre) is for a white western
audience. This will affect the ethnicity of the actors in our video as if there is a
main one they need to relate to it would be better for that to be of white
ethnicity, like themselves.
7. WHAT GENRE(S) OF MUSIC DO YOU
USUALLY LISTEN TO?
The most popular response was “Pop”. This result was expected as it is
generally the most popular genre however it is not the genre we are going to
make. We are going with the dubstep genre , which wasn’t an option as at the
time we hadn’t explored that genre. This will affect the rest of our results as
they may be aimed at pop videos.
However, our dupstep song features a pop artist so it won’t hinder us too
much.
8. WOULD YOU PREFER THE VIDEO TO BE
MAINLY IN?
The most popular response was “Vibrant Colour”. This result was expected as
we know the audience like pop music and stereotypically younger audiences
like brighter colours. This will affect our colour choice for our digi-pack and
video as we had previously thought about a darker colour choice but we are
now looking a brighter colours. To make the colours in our video really stand
out we will do the first section in black and white until you see the
protagonists pixelated face in a medium close up on the road crossings. From
that point onwards there will be lots of colour from the street signs, coffee
cup, girls pink jacket and grass in the park.
9. WOULD YOU PREFER THE VIDEO TO BE
LOCATED...
The most popular response was “In a city”. This result was expected as
stereotypically audiences like to watch a video which is in an environment they
aspire to live in/experience. This result has helped us decide that our video is
going to be set in a city apart from the morning scene. We will have
establishing shots of signs and streets to establish the city as a location.
10. WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTING DO YOU
PREFER IN A MUSIC VIDEO?
The most popular response was “High Key”. This result was expected as
stereotypically audiences like to watch a video which is in high key lighting as it
make sit look professional. This result has informed us that high key lighting is
preferred and will be used for the majority of our video. This fits will the
vibrant colours and means when filming in the park we shall try and do it in
sunny weather to get the brightest lighting and and when in doors, such as
coffee cup make sure we have the actors in good lighting.
11. WHAT TYPE OF CAMERA ANGLES
WOULD BE BEST FOR THE VIDEO?
The most popular response were “Full Shot” & “Medium Close Up”. Firstly,
there was a misunderstanding with the definition of the shots meaning Full
Shot is actually a Wide Shot. These results were conclusive as the most popular
and used camera angles are wide shot’s and medium close ups. This is because
it shows of the artist face and lets you see what an artist is wearing and their
surroundings. This result will help us when we make the story board for our
video as these two shots/angles will be repeated a lot throughout. To establish
the city setting and to show the storyline of the girl and boy being within a
small space but not noticing each other will be shown through many wide
shots. Also, we will use many medium close ups on our protagonist to show his
hidden identity at the start and then happy identity once he has fond the girl.
12. DO YOU PREFER A MUSIC VIDEO TO HAVE A
NARRATIVE APPROACH OR A FOCUS ON A
ARTIST SINGING?
The most popular response were “Narrative”. This result was conclusive as its
very popular for music videos to have a narrative as its something interesting
to watch. This result has helped us make the decision of wanting to do a video
based on narrative. We have decided that we would like the storyline to be of a
males normal day however her doesn’t notice there's this girl who he keeps
crossing paths with and eventually they end up together- the main point will
be that his own identity wont be shown till he's found the girl as he is
incomplete without her. This links to the repeated lyric “where are you now
that I need you”.
13. HAVE YOU HEARD THE SONG "WHERE ARE
U NOW" (FEAT. JUSTIN BIEBER) BY
SKRILLEX?
The most popular response was “No”. This result was expected as the song is
quite knew and un heard. We asked this question to see how popular the song
was. This will affect maybe who we have in the video/ what we involve. As the
song’s unheard we may need to think about involving brands or celebrity
endorsement if it doesn’t become any more popular. However, as our genre is
not about selling celebrity’s its about the music we decide to use unknown
actors however give the music video and linking digipak a mystery sense which
will intrigue audiences.
14. IF YES, DO YOU LIKE THE SONG?
The most popular response was “Yes”. This result was expected as the song is
likeable and is by two very popular artists. This would of effected how we
focused the narrative of the video – as if the song was not liked we could of
done a narrative which did not relate at all to the song so people got
distracted by it. However, it doesn’t matter now as people like it. This meant
we could make the music video how we liked and relating to the song as
people enjoyed it.
15. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE ACTORS IN A
MUSIC VIDEO TO BE WEARING?
The most popular response was “Individual Fashion Choices”. This result was
not expected as usually people like to see what's on trend in a music video so
they can go out and buy it to / relate to it. This will affect how we dress our
actors. We can now make them unique and wear what we thinks suits and not
have to research what will be on trend when the video is published. It also
means we can create a new style for the actor which can suit the artists house
style for their digi-pack. We have decided to dress our actor in a suit and
trainers; this give sour actor his own style and the trend could even catch on if
people think he looks good in the video.
16. WHAT TYPE OF MESSAGES DO YOU
LIKE TO READ FROM A MUSIC VIDEO?
The most popular response was “Happy/Positive”. This result was not
expected as usually people like to see a person facing a struggle in a music
video making them feel better about their situation. However for this genre of
music it is popular for videos to be positive. This will affect our narrative
choice. We wanted to do the narrative either about someone finding
themselves or finding someone like them/for them – we can turn either of
these positively. The end of the video where the couple are very happy and
have medium close ups on their happy faces gives the message a very positive
feeling.
17. WHAT PROPS WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE
IN A MUSIC VIDEO?
The most popular responses were “Speakers, Headphones and Morning
Routine”. This result was expected as headphones and speakers are iconic
symbols for music. However, the option of Alcohol was expected to be more
popular as it’s frequently involved in a lot of videos. These results have shown
us that our idea to follow someone's day works as people would wan to see
those props used as well as making us involve speakers and headphones into
the piece. Speakers and headphones didn’t fit into our story when
storyboarding however Morning routine is key the music video and sets the
beginning of the video.
18. WHAT GENDER WOULD YOU LIKE THE
MAIN ACTOR TO BE IN THE VIDEO?
The most popular response was “Male”. This result was expected due to
mostly females answering but also due to the Michael Shore Theory we
expected a male actor to be popular. This result has made us decide to have
the main actor as a male. However we will have a female as the next character.
19. WHAT AGE WOULD YOU LIKE THE
MAIN ACTOR IN THE VIDEO?
The most popular response was “Young Adult”. This result wasn’t expected
due to usually a teenage audience want to see an actor they can relate to –
which would usually mean they are of the same age. However we were not
able to cast a young adult so have used a older looking teenager. We believe
that the audience will not be relating the age or gender of our actor but the
storyline of finding someone and feeling complete.
20. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN A
MUSIC VIDEO TO WHERE ARE U NOW?
There was no popular response. This question wasn’t necessary and was only
so that we could find out what ideas anybody had to help us. We found it
interesting that someone said “someone searching for something” as that was
idea we had. This means we will stick with our original idea for the video.
