1. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To collect feedback on what my target audience think of my music video I decided to create a
survey on ‘Survey Monkey’ this is because it would allow me make the survey exactly how I
wanted it. The option to make it completely anonymous allowed me to collect fare results as no
one would feel they needed to be nice to me. I also posted my music video along with the
survey on Facebook which is a social media platform. On Facebook I have a range of people
that are able to see my posts. As a result of this, I will have a range of people to fill out my
survey and a much larger demographic of people than if I asked people individually.
2. Do you think the narrative and performance link well in our music video?
Linking the narrative with the performance in our video was
extremely important for us, as we wanted the viewers to be able to
follow the music video. From the results of the survey I found that
the narrative and performance linked well together. According to my
respondents, they mostly felt the link was strong between the two as
75% of them answered ‘Yes’. This shows that we generally managed
to tell the story of the song well throughout the video and that it was
easy to follow for most viewers. This is a very important factor of the
video that we really wanted our audience to understand.
Nobody answered ‘no’ in the survey, I feel that this positive outcome
is because we focused strongly on trying to connect the viewers with
the narrative and think back to their younger days. For example the
lyrics ‘wish we could turn back time, to the good old days’ are key to
the performance. I think that the actors performances managed to
portray the narrative well because they matched the demographic of
young adults looking back at their childhood and younger days. For
adults, this can be a form of escapism as many adults like to
reminisce of their younger days.
However, 20% answered ‘sometimes’. In my opinion, this could be
due to our complex and unique narrative. we were unsure as to
whether our audience would remain immersed after the 10 second
interval because this pause is an unusual element to have in a music
video. could make viewers lose interest and lose focus with the
narrative, causing an inconsistency in the video. However, opinions
are subjective, so they may view the narrative in different ways and it
is difficult to interpret what the audience thought when the question
in the survey is a closed question.
3. Compared to professionally made music videos, how do you rate our product?
This was a crucial element for us as we
wanted ours to be as near to a
professional video that would be in the
music industry. This question gives us the
best understanding of how well we have
developed it, from the quality of filming to
the lip syncing of the actors. From the
results, I feel that we have done well as we
scored an average of 8.5/10. This is a very
positive response and shows that our
editing skills were very professional. I think
to get an overall score this high shows that
everything worked all together within the
video. With such a low budget compared
to professional music videos, I am very
happy with the survey results. Also the
editing software we used was to a
professional level which significantly
improves the quality of the effects in the
whole video.
However, there are a lot of factors that affected how professional the music video could be and why we didn’t score 10 overall. Compared to
professionally made music videos, the equipment we used was nowhere near the same standard. For example most of the video was filmed on
an I Phone 6S+ whereas in the music industry they would use very expensive professional video cameras. In addition to this, the actors,
directors, costumes, makeup, lighting and extras affected how professional the video was. Our skill base is not as good as people who have
worked in the industry for many years.
4. How well do you think our actors matched the genre of our music video? (Indie Rap)
We chose these 2 people to be our main characters as they were young, fun, had quirky hair and looked a bit more unique
than most young adults. From the survey I can see that our actors matched the indie rap genre of our music video, as 82%
answered ‘very well’ and the other 18% answered ‘well’. This is because of the actors age, style, persona and the way they
were dressed. I chose the clothes that they going to wear that would fit the indie genre. Their whole appearance makes a big
difference as this is what the audience are seeing throughout the video. This mixed in with the speed of editing, props,
locations and effects, bring the indie genre to life.
However, not all my audience may know what Indie Rap is and so may just be assuming that the actors matched this genre,
so the results may not be completely valid. Everyone also has different opinions on what ‘indie’ is, so some people may think
it is more matched to our actors than others.
5. How convincing were our actors making you believe they were performing their song?
I feel that both the actors are extremely convincing
as we scored 100%. You can see this by their facial
expressions and body movement throughout the
video. They both look extremely enthusiastic and
really into the music. Every time they sang the lyrics
and played the drums they were 100% committed
to making the performance believable.
When directing our video I made it clear that I
wanted the actors to perform the song as if it was
their own. They really needed to believe in the
words and know them off by heart. The timing of
the lip syncing was very important to make it more
convincing and believable. |At every step we knew
what shots and what we wanted the actors to do.
One of my actors has great stage presence as he
has prior experience performing in music videos.
This really helped as he knew how to act in front of
the camera with minimal guidance and it helped
show my other actor how to connect to the song to
make it believable.
6. How accurately synced was the singing and drumming throughout the music video?
The singing and drumming had to be perfectly synced for the video to look professional. To do this, we took the amp every where we went
and played the song over and over again to ensure the timing was perfect. In our planning for the video we ensured that both our actors could
accurately lip sync the lyrics and knew them perfectly. Also from our research we knew that for the lip syncing to look natural you had to over
exaggerate the words. We also had the music in the background of the raw footage so that it was easy to match the actors lip syncing to the
music which made it easier when editing. The fact that we scored a 9 shows us that the singing and drumming was very accurate and that
shooting each shot at least 3 times helped us to achieve this.
However, I feel that the reason for not scoring 10/10 is because at one point in the first verse (although its hard to see) there is one shot in
which the lip syncing is not perfect. This happened as a result of not checking the shot again and realizing it was slightly out in editing. It was
also difficult to make sure that every single mouth movement matched the song lyrics as the actors are not professional and it is easy to forget
lyrics and the exact timing of the words.
7. What is your opinion on the 10 second pause in the music during our video? (At the 40sec
mark)
As this was included in the sounds track, and rather than take it
out we decided to use it to make our video stand out differently.
It was a challenge as the you have to really think about what will
keep the audience interested when there is pause in the music.
We added the narrative of the card trick and put it in slow
motion to over exaggerate the pause that we had. We thought
this was simple yet effective and something that really makes our
music video unique.
To get the best understanding of what our audience thought, we
added in a answer box allowing people to comment their
thoughts. The comments about the 10 second pause were
generally quite positive. Some examples of this are ‘makes the
video stand out’ and ‘creates suspense and intrigues you’. I feel
we have succeeded as the audiences responses also included the
words ‘interesting ‘different’ ‘and ‘unique’ all things we wanted
the shot to portray.
However, there were two negative comments such as ‘I didn’t
really understand why it was there’ and ‘didn’t really understand
it’. This may mean the card trick did not link well to rest of our
narrative or maybe they didn’t understand the overall slowing
down effect on the video.
8. What, if any, section of our music video would you change?
This was an interesting question to see what sections the
audience did and didn’t like. It is good to get feedback whether
positive or negative so that we can keep improving.
The results were very mixed for this question. Firstly, 7 people
commented that they wouldn’t change anything. I am very
pleased with this as they obviously liked everything we did
with the music video.
However, 3 people commented on the quality of the video.
They suggested that the quality of some of the parts could be
improved, especially the smoke part which was mentioned
twice. This was one of the only disadvantages of using an
iPhone to film. Athough perfect in good light when this taken
away and used in the dark the quality is most definitely
compromised. For us as well as the audience this is the part we
would most like to change if we could. Also, it seems that 2
people would change the 10 second gap or would do
something differently. There were also suggestions to change
some effects, such as adding more advanced editing to the
clips.
