COURSE OBJECTIVE: COURSE OUTCOME:
Understand the Lathe
operations Using
Lathe Machine,
APPLICATIONS:
Learned how to Use
Lathe Tools and
Importance of Lathe
Machines.
3. LATHE PARTS:
The major parts of lathe machine are given as under:
•BED
•HEAD STOCK
•TAILSTOCK
•CARRIAGE
•FEED MECHANISM
•THREAD CUTTING MECHANISM
4. Bed:
•A simple lathe comprises of a bed made of grey cast iron
•It is massive and rigid single piece casting made to support
other active parts of lathe
•On left end of the bed, headstock of lathe machine is located
while on right side tailstock is located.
•The guide ways of the lathe bed may be flat and inverted V
shape.
•It is sufficiently rigid and good damping capacity to absorb
vibration.
•It prevents the deflection produced by the cutting forces.
LATHE PARTS:
5. LATHE PARTS:
HeadStock
•The main function of headstock is to transmit
power to the different parts of a lathe.
•Head stock is the main body parts which are placed
at left side of bed. It is serving as holding device for
the gear chain, spindle, driving pulley etc.
•It is also made by cast iron.
•The main spindle is adjusted in it, which possesses
live centre to which the work can be attached.
• It supports the work and revolves with the work,
fitted into the main spindle of the headstock.
6. LATHE PARTS:
Tail Stock
•Fig. Shows the tail stock of central lathe, which is
commonly, used for the support the circular job being
turned on centers.
•Tail stock can be used for centre drilling operation
•Tail stock also used for taper turning by tail sock set
over method.
7. LATHE PARTS:
Carriage:
•The carriage is used for support, guide and feed the tool
against the job when the machining is done.
•It holds moves and controls the cutting tool.
It gives rigid supports to the tool during operations.
•It transfers power from feed rod to cutting tool through
apron mechanism for longitudinal cross-feeding.
•It simplifies the thread cutting operation with the
help of lead screw and half nut mechanism.
•It comprises of important parts such as
• Apron
•Cross-slide
•Saddle
•Compound rest
•Tool post
It provides three movements to the tool:
Longitudinal feed-through carriage movement
Cross feed-through cross slide movement
Angular feed-through top slide movement
8. LATHE PARTS:
•Fastened to saddle
• Houses gears and mechanism required to move
carriage or cross-slide automatically
• Locking-off lever inside apron prevents engaging
split-nut lever and automatic feed lever at same time
• Apron hand wheel turned manually to move carriage
along lathe bed
Apron
9. LATHE PARTS:
CROSS-SLIDE
Mounted on top of saddle
Provides manual or automatic cross movement
for cutting tool
A hand wheel with micrometer color is provided
for precise positioning of the cross slide.
Provides manual or automatic cross movement
for cutting tool
The top surface of the cross-slide is provided
with T-slot.
10. LATHE PARTS:
Saddle
The saddle is H- shaped casting fitting the
lathe bed and moves along the guide ways.
it supports cross slide, compound slide and
tool post
11. LATHE PARTS:
compound rest
•This slide is actuated by a screw, which rotates in a
nut fixed to the saddle.
•Used for taper turning operations
• It is necessary for turning angles and boring short
tapers.
•It supports the tool post and cutting tool in its various
positions.
•It can be swiveled at any desired position in the
horizontal plane.
12. Tool post
• is an important part of carriage, used for holding the
cutting tools,
•which fits in a tee-slot in the compound rest and holds the
tool holder in place by the tool post screw.
•There are three types of tool post commonly used and
those are:
Ring and rocker tool post
Square head tool post
Quick change tool post
Ring and rocker tool
post
Quick change tool post
LATHE PARTS:
13. Leadscrew
A lead screw is also known as a power screw
or a translation screw.
It converts rotational motion to linear motion.
Lead Screw is used for Thread Cutting
operation in a lathe machine tool.
LATHE PARTS:
14. Feed Rod
Feed rod is used to move the carriage from
the left side to the right side and also from the
right side to the left side.
LATHE PARTS:
15. Spindle
•The spindle contains means for mounting
various work holding devices like chucks, collets,
face and dog plates
•Power supplied to the spindle from an electric
motor through a V- belt or silent chain drive
LATHE PARTS:
16. 1. Length between the centers
2. Height of the centers
3. Swing diameter over the bed
4. Swing diameter over the carriage
5. Maximum bar diameter
SPECIFICATIONOF LATHE
LATHE :
17. SPECIFICATIONs OF LATHE
LATHE :
Length between the centers
“It is the measure of the maximum length
of the work piece that can be fixed between the lathe
centers”.
Height of the centers
“It is the distance between the lathe axis
and the lathe bed”.
Swing diameter over the bed
“It is the maximum diameter of the work
piece that can be turned on a lathe without hitting the lathe
bed”.
Swing diameter over the carriage
Swing diameter over the carriage “It is
the maximum diameter of the work piece that can be turned
on a lathe without hitting the carriage”.
Maximum bar diameter
“It is the maximum diameter of the work
piece that can be passed through the hole in the head stock”.
