COURSE OBJECTIVE: COURSE OUTCOME:
Understand the Lathe
operations Using
Lathe Machine,
APPLICATIONS:
Learned how to Use
Lathe Tools and
Importance of Lathe
Machines.
3. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Facing:
•Usually the first process performed. Facing is the
process of making flat surfaces on a lathe.
•It is the machining of the ends of a work piece to
make the ends smooth.
•The job is held on a faceplate or chuck and the tool
is fed at right angles to the bed to obtain flat
surfaces.
4. LATHE OPERATIONS:
PlainTurning:
•Turning is the removal of metal from the outer
diameter of a rotating cylindrical work piece.
•In plain turning, the work piece is turned straight
throughout the entire length when
•it is made to rotate about the lathe axis, and the
cutting tool is fed along the lathe
•axis.
•The plain or straight turning produces a cylindrical
surface after machining.
5. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Knurling:
•Knurling mainly used for gripping purpose,
Decorative and/or Functional Purpose
•In this operation Knurling Tool is used
•It is a Forming Process
•Knurling, as shown in Figure may be of two types :
•(a) Straight or parallel, and
•(b) Diamond type.
6. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Parting off:
•This operation involves cutting the work-metal
into two parts by using parting off
tool.
•Feed to the cutting tool is given in same
manner as in case of facing operation
7. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Drilling:
•For making a standard size of hole in a work piece
by means of drill is known as drilling
• Operation.
•For this operation, drill is held in tail stock spindle.
8. LATHE OPERATIONS:
boring:
Boring is the operation of enlarging a drilled
hole by means of a boring tool. The boring
Tool is fitted on a boring bar which is held in tail
stock spindle..
Boring
10. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Taper turning :
•When the diameter of a piece changes uniformly from
one end to the other, the piece is said to be tapered.
•Taper turning as a machining operation is the gradual
reduction in diameter from one part of a cylindrical work
piece to another part
•Tapers can be either external or internal.
Taperturningmethods:
Taper turning operations are obtained in following
methods:
•Taper turning by offsetting the tail stock
•Taper turning by swiveling the compound slide
•Taper turning by form tool method
•Taper turning with taper turning attachment
14. LATHE OPERATIONS:
Taper turning by form tool method
•This is one of the simplest methods to produce short
taper.
•This method is shown in the above figure. To the
required angle the form is grounded.
•The tool is fed perpendicular to the lathe axis, when the
work piece rotates.
•The tool cutting edge length must be greater than the
taper length. Since the entire cutting edge removes the
metal, it will produce a lot of vibration and hence a large
force is required. It is done in slow speed.
