This is my focus group analysis. I conducted it on Facebook Messenger. I felt that this was something that would be easier than putting people under pressure in front of a camera and asking them detailed questions.
1. Focus Group
Analysis
I did my focus group on Facebook messenger on a group
chat. I felt this would be better than putting people on
camera. People may feel like they are under pressure if
they are stuck in front of a camera. It is best on a group
chat as they can be open without worries of looking silly or
having to say it or anything like that.
2. This was the first question I asked the
people in my focus group. I started with
the basics as from what I learned from
the questionnaires I conducted, not many
people knew what this genre of magazine
really was.
I wasn’t surprised that I got a mixture of people who knew and people who didn’t. There
were a couple of people who didn’t answer this question but I don’t think many of them
knew what a regional magazine was either. Not many people I knew really read
magazines that much so not many knew what kinds of things I was talking about. I am
happy I started with this question because it is important I know what the general divide
is between people who knew and people who didn’t.
Straight after I got all my answers for this
question, I gave the definition so that the rest of
the questions would make sense.
3. This is the next question I asked. I wanted to know
what they are used to seeing and what they
prefer seeing on the front of magazines.
I found lots of these answers quite interesting. I said
it didn't have to be from our region to get more of a
variety of answers. I asked similar questions in my
questionnaire but I am asking it in the focus group so
that I could get more detail in the answers instead of
check boxes. The more detailed answers were the
ones that I am more interested in. Mainly the last
answer from Josh. Lots of people said big text and
colours which is what Josh said as well, however he
also made the point of magazines having toys in
them. I think this is a good point, and seeming as I
am doing a lifestyle and fashion magazine, I could
have some kind of poster or even a make up item in
the magazine. I will not be able to include this in
reality however I can put it in a puff text or advertise
it on the cover page.
4. This question was another simple question that I asked because I
needed to know where people see them so I could see what kind of
things I should include on my magazine to get the attention I need
from those places.
I didn't need any particular amount of detail in the answers for this
questions. Just some locations. I got the answers I thought I'd get as
well as some I didn't expect. The answers like bus stops, city centres
and train stations were ones I expected to see. However in the last
answer and the third, they said the side of busy roads, airports, and
shopping centres were ons I had pretty much forgotten about. It was
interesting to see these answers because of the ages they were,
ones like airports were not locations I expected to see from these
age ranges.
5. The next question was a follow up to the next one so I could
properly find something important in all the answers so that
I know what will get the attention on a billboard for when I
make mine.
I think all the answers I got from this question are all valid
and important. Things like bright colours and bold letters.
All these things I have considered. However I needed to
make sure that the people in my target audience also all
saw the things I see on a billboard. Although I am in this
age range, I feel that for me to plan anything simply on my
views that wouldn't be right. I need to see what attracts
attention to other people as well. Answers like celebrity
endorsement isn't something that can include in my
magazine as I am providing my own models. However I
found it interesting that nice messages and quotes that
people read and “think about” came up in Josh's answers.
Mainly because I personally wouldn't expect this to be
noticed by someone my age.
6. So as a way of giving everyone in my
focus group e right idea, I decided to
show pictures. I felt it was important to
let the age group know what kind of
fashion I would be using. This means
that they will understand any questions
to come. am interested to see what
they think about this kind of fashion
style. Whilst it can be seen as unique, I
think it is quite common. This fashion
style is seen as being unique and
creative and many teens around this age
are beginning to understand themselves
more and I think that this is important to
note when thinking about this fashion
style.
7. This final question was one that I asked as a way of
comparing opinions of the target audiences. I
wanted to see if they were different or the same. I
named the fashion as it is different to what most
people would probably think of this name for this
fashion style.
The answers were pretty much all what I expected them to be. They
were also what I think about this fashion style too. The first one was
very specific. Jing said “people who are into Indie music” and I think
this is a very good answer because Indie music can be a variety of
different music, fitting in with the unique fashion style. People have
their own preferences of what music they are into. The second answer
was “people who like to be alternative” and this is just like what I have
been thinking about this fashion style. It is for people who want to be
different and unique. Finally the last answer is teens and this is just the
kind of answer that is what I was thinking as well which is why I have
set the target audience to the age range I did.
