2. Task 7 involved creating a questionnaire as a primary
resource to gather data and establish the lifestyle of my target
audience. The questions within my questionnaire were both
quantitative and qualitative meaning I included numbers as
well as opinionated question options. This meant my
questions were both open and closed in order to relate to my
demographics which included age, gender, ethnicity, social
class and lifestyle. This questionnaire meant I was able to
gather information which gave me a greater idea of what I
should include within my magazine and how to represent my
target audience.
Task 7 Introduction
3. I asked this question as this would then help me with learning
about what genders want from different things. By learning about
the gender of the person taking the questionnaire it made it
easier to understand what males and females would want from
the magazine of which I am going to create. Hip hop magazines
are currently aimed at mainly males, this is a convention which I
wanted to challenge. For this reason it was important that I knew
what codes and conventions to include within my magazine to
engage with the audience.
The people who took my questionnaire were mostly males- this is
something I wish had bee even. I currently know what males
would like more than females. If I was to do the questionnaire
gain, this would be something which I would make even; making
it much easier for me to understand what to put in my magazine
and then explaining why. In terms of my genre, this could prove
that males are more interested in a hip hop magazine as they
were more willing to take the questionnaire when they
understand that this was regarding a hip hop magazine.
From this question I have more insight into why is likely to read
my magazines and helps me with questions which come later in
my questionnaire.

ARE YOU BLACK/AFRO CARIBBEAN?
This was another question which I asked as this
was a convention of most hip hop magazines
which I wanted to challenge. It is stereotypically
know that hip hop music is related to black
males and females. This question helped me
gather information which I could then taken on
board as part of my research task. From this
question I have discovered that not only black
males and females are interested in hip hop
music but other ethnicities too. Because of this I
can now include conventions within my
magazine which will not just engage one
ethnicity but several- widening my target
audience. My primary research surprised me as I
was aiming to stick to codes and conventions
that other magazines use however, I now feel I
have information which will help me encourage
all ethnicities too read and enjoy.

DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A JOB?
Although this question may seem irrelevant
and strange to ask as part of a magazine
questionnaire it helped me hugely. This
question gave me insight into the people who
will be reading my magazine but as well as
this an idea into the price of which I should
make my magazine. If people who wil be
reading my magazine do not currently have a
job it may be difficult for them to afford to buy
my product. It is important that my magazine
is affordable to any age. My question
indicated that I should keep my price range
at a middle price as this will be aimed at
middle class people. In terms of my audience
it helped me gage what kind of people will be
reading eg the class.

DO YOU LISTEN TO HIP HOP MUSIC?
This question was one of the most important
questions within my questionnaire. The question ‘do
you listen to hip hop music?’ helped me know if the
individual was relevant to my questionnaire. If the
individual had answered no, there thoughts on what
should be included in my magazine ma be opposite
to those who do listen. From this question I was
hoping to find more information on what attracts my
target audience. I felt that I gained valuable
information from my question as over ½ of the
people who were included in my questionnaire were
interested in hip hop music as this genre was a
genre which they listen too. The people who were
involved within my questionnaire who do not listen to
hip hop music are likely to give negative comments
in regards to the magazine- these results wold be
results I would take into consideration but may not
make my question as useful as it could be.

WHAT HIP HOP ARTISTS DO YOU
CURRENTLY LISTEN TOO?
This question was hugely important within my
primary research as it helped me gain information
on specific aspects of magazine which will help
engage the target audience. By knowing what artists
my audience would be interested it indicated the
ethnicity etc of the type of people who are expected
to stereotypically be related to hip hop music. As
well as this, this question helped me gather
information on whether I would use celebrity
endorsement within my magazines images and
articles. From my results, you can see many people
made comments on the artists ‘Drake’ from this I
can see from my target audience he is someone
they are highly interested in. In terms of my
magazine this would help regarding my
representations as I now know the types of artists
which need to be included to make my audience
feel inclined to read my magazine.

This question was one which I was unsure would help
me that much when making my magazine.
However, this question did help me as it have me an
insight into the type of things people who read music
magazines like as well as the things which would need
to be included to make those who do not currently read
to read my magazine in particular. In terms of my
target audience, I now know what I need to do to widen
my target audience for those who enjoy hip hop
magazines but are currently not interested in buy
magazines which relate to this genre.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO
PAY FOR A MUSIC MAGAZINE?
This was one of the questions which related to
the questions which I asked earlier in my
questionnaire regarding if being in a current job.
The aim of this question was to understand the
market of which I should target my magazine at
as well as a reasonable price which my target
audience would be willing to pay. From my
results I can see that the audience who will be
reading my magazine are likely to pay between
£1-£4. Again this gave me more knowledge into
the class of the audience who will be reading my
magazine and the people who are stereotypically
likely to buy my magazine. This will help me
when pricing my magazine as well as taking the
class of my audience in, in regards to articles etc.

WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A HIP
HOP FRONT COVER?
This was a question that I wanted to take into
consideration deeply. This is because the front
cover of my magazine is the first thing that the
audience sees and this is the one part of the
magazine which will either engage them or not.
This qualitative date meant I could now know what
the audience of the age range of which my
magazine will be targeted at expect from my front
cover. In other hip hop magazines celebrity
endorsement is used and black ethnic
backgrounds are usually used. This again was
something I wanted to challenge as my target
audience is aimed at all ethnicities. As well as this
from my results I can see both white/black females
would like to be seen as the front cover- again this
is something which would challenge the codes and
conventions of most hip hop magazines. The
question itself gave me a more realistic idea of
what I should include and why. In terms of my
genre I am challenging the stereotypes of which
they are known for, something which I was thinking
of doing but need primary research in order to
know whether to go through with this.

WHAT TYPES OF ARTICLES WOULD YOU
LIKE TOO SEE WITHIN THE MAGAZINE?
This question was very specific as I was
unsure on what types of articles my
audience would enjoy in a hip hop
magazine. The question gave me more
idea on what I should include in my
magazine as it came from those who will
be reading my magazine and are
interested in the genre of which I will be
talking about.
The results from the questionnaire were
helpful for me, however, if I was to do this
again I would of asked the audience to
give ideas of what they would like to see
as they may have other ideas. This
would then help to draw even more
people who enjoy hip hop music into my
magazine.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE MAGAZINE BE
RELEASED/PUBLISHED?
It is important that I know how often my target
audience would like my magazine to be
released. I would not want my audience feel
bored when reading my magazine as its
important that the quality stays high throughout
all the publications.
The frequency of my publications is important
as I want my audience to feel they want to
continually buy my magazine. From my results,
my audience believe that an issue should be
published weekly. From my other questions I
can see what will make my audience want to
buy my magazine weekly- this is another
question which related to others. I want my
audience to feel engaged and excited to buy
the next issue of my music magazine so it is
important that I take everything which is said
into consideration regarding frequency of
publications to the conventions they want to
see within the magazine.

The masthead of my magazine is again
one of the most important parts as this can
draw the attention to the reader. I had
already came up with a name for my
magazine which I though conveyed hip
hop music and was different. For this
reason I asked this question so I could
gain opinions of those who will be buying
my magazine. From my results I can see
that those who enjoy hip hop music. 90%
of people who filled out my questionnaire
said yes to the name Platinum and gave a
reason why. It was important that I knew
what my audience would think of the
masthead as I want this to be something
they will remember and are engaged by.
This question gave me conclusion to
whether to should call my magazine
Platinum as well as reasons why. These
reasons also helped me understand what
my target audience want from my
magazine eg. To be unique. This is
something I can then try and use through
other conventions like images and articles.
