3. Introduction
The Polarity Management model and set
of principles are auser friendly way to deal
with all polarities in life. Polarities are
ongoing, chronic issues that are
unavoidable andunsolvable.
Attempting to address them with
traditional problem solving skills only
makes things worse.
4. Introduction
There is significant competitive advantage
for those leaders, teams, or organizations
that distinguish between a problem to
solve and a polarity to manage and are
effective with bothcan
.
6. Principle of polarities
1-Polarities are two different values or
points of view that areinterdependent
Even though the values are very different
and2-there is tension between
them,they need eachother.
3-The oscillation between the poles taps
the energy to reach the highergoal.
7. Principle of polarities
4-If you focus on only one pole you will
always go to thedownsidequadrant
which is the loss of the other pole‘s
positiveoutcomes
5-Both poles should have neutral names,
if one is positive and the other is negative,
it will look like a problem to solve and
polarities are not problems to besolved.
8. Principle of polarities
6-There is 100% predictability that there
will be negative outcomes if one pole is
neglected.
7-Polarities are energy systems that are
unavoidable,unsolvable, indestructible and
unstoppable. They simply must be
managed.
9. Why is polarity thinking important
1-Healthcare leaders are must be masters of problem
solving .
2-Many issues today are a combinaIon of problems to
be managed
3-solved and polariIes to be The inability to disInguish
between problems to be solved and polariIes to manage
results in wasted time, energy money..
4-, improved outcomes sustainable clinical and results in
difficulty achieving.
5-They need each other and they are interdependent.
6-Polarities are all about relationship.
10. Definition of Polarity Management
framework and principles provide a
practical set of resources for dealing with
all polarities in life. Polarities are ongoing,
chronic issues
which are both unavoidable and
unsolvable. Attempting to address them
through customary problem
11. How are Polarities Managed
There are three steps necessary to manage polarities:
See, Map and Tap.
The first is to know there are polarities and how they
work so we can See them.
The second step is to Map the polarity which requires
naming each pole and filling in the map so we clearly
know the content of the positive and negative
quadrants,the higher purpose and greatestfear.
The third step is to Tap the energy/tension between
them which requires actionsteps to keep each pole
strong. To visualize this, the Polarity Map needs to
expand.
12. Guidelines for Creating a Polarity Map
1-Identify a key polarity.
This is done through dialogue to create a non
blaming description of the issues,
opportunities, and polarities present in any
given situation
.1Agree on names for the poles-2.
Remember both poles are necessary and
interdependent. Write the pole names on the
map.
13. .1Brainstorm entries in each together
thequadrant.eight
Identify both upsides.
Then identify both downsides. (Can
modify this order
to meet individual and group needs.)
Oppositional values and fears get
identified and respected as important.
14. .1Agree on a higher purpose and
deeperfear.
Agreeing on a higher purpose integrates
oppositional views and provides a reason
to manage the tension between the two
views.
15. How to map polarities
Polarity mapping works across all sectors and
levels (personal, organizational, sectoral,
societal) and most importantly it allows us to
reframe conflict into sustainable innovation
andengagement.
Polarity mapping is best accomplished by
diverse groups of people. Bring people into
the mapping processes that have a variety of
perspectives and opinions about the issue at
hand.
16. A tool that can be used by your group to
:
identify and name the dilemmas as polarities to
manage surface the positive and negative results
of eachside
create a plan that makes it more likely that the
positive results of each side will beexperienced
identify early warning signs of slippage into the
negativepoles
17. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 1 – Gather a diverse group invested
in and committed to exploring the issue.
Encourage them to share their perspective
or tell their story regarding the issue.
Story circles work well for this. You can do
this face-to-face or online. Leadership‘s
role in this is to facilitate the process and
hold the space as conveners
–
18. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 2Determine if the issue really is a
dilemma or paradox to managed using
polarity mapping. Do this a group
19. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 3–Create an empty Polarity Map.
This is a flip-chart paper and marker
activity (or post-it) or for those who bend
well, a floor with masking tape and cards
works great. Write the name of the issue
or dilemma to help avoid drift
20. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 4–Describe the dilemma using the
Polarity Mapping tool.
Start with the fears – what we don‘t want. Dig
to get at the real and agreed upon wording of
the fear. Ask the group to describe the situation
they want to avoid. Record this at the bottom
centre of themap.
Next describe what they do want – the agreed
upon vision of the ideal situation. Record this at
the centre, top of themap.
21. Polarity mapping step by step
·Decide on names for each pole. Avoid names that
promote bias instead try to use neutral labels. This is the
hardest part of this whole process. It requires digging
into underlying beliefs and values that are driving the
polarization.
In the bottom left box list the downside of the solution named in
that pole.
In the top left box list the upside of the solution named in that
pole.
In the bottom right box list the downside of the solution named
in that poleIn the top right box list the upside of the solution
named in thatpole..
22. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 5–This is where the management
begins. Looking at the list of negatives for each
pole and determine and record the warning
signs – red flags – that could alertyouof
movementtowardsthis―ViciousCycle‖.Be
specificanddetailed. Who will look for these?
Is there an early warning system in place? What
willwe do if we fine ourselves slipping into this
area of themap?
23. Polarity mapping step by step
Step 6–Look at the lists of positives for
each pole and list the specific actions that

Being specific is the key to this. Who,
what, when, where, and how will we
support and measure these greenflags?
