1. LSC BASEBALL
The Lone Star Conference baseball season is off to a hot start with six of the seven teams unbeaten with a
combined record of 21-1.
This week’s schedule is full of non-conference contests.
LSC teams are playing a 10-week schedule with a four-game series against every other team during weeks
8-14 determining the LSC Champion. Conference series scheduled weeks 5-7 will not count toward the league
standings. Each four-game series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and
9-inning contest Sunday.
The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference
games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion
and receive the league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason. The double-elimination championship
featuring the top four teams will be played May 11-12-13, at the No. 1 seed.
LSC baseball teams are 21-1 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the teams are currently
0-0 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 5-1 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Adam Adkins, West Texas A&M University, JR, OF, Northglenn, Colo., Northglenn HS
Adkins had a great start to his WT career as he went 7 for 14 with three runs scored, two doubles, one triple,
one home run and eight RBI in a three-game sweep at New Mexico Highlands. Adkins walked twice and reached
base at a .563 clip, while slugging 1.000. He had five putouts in five chances in three starts in the outfield with
no errors. Adkins’ best game was in the second game as he went 4 for 6 with two runs scored, a triple and a
home run just missing the cycle, while driving in four in the Buffs’ 21-2 win.
PITCHER
Keenan Dodd, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, RHP, Albuquerque, NM, Hope Christian Academy
Dodd pitched four perfect innings for the Greyhounds this past weekend, striking out 10 of the 12 batters faced.
His 4.0 shutout innings helped Eastern to a 7-0 win in the series finale against Lane College, earning the victory.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Alex DeLaCruz, Eastern New Mexico University, hit above .600 in the Greyhounds four-game sweep of Lane
College this past weekend in Jackson, Tennessee. The junior infielder hit three home runs with 11 RBI and also
logged a triple. Of the 15 times the Freeport, NY, native reached base, he accounted for 10 runs as the Hounds
outscored the Dragons, 65-8.
Austin Call, Tarleton State University, made himself very well known to the Tarleton faithful with a stellar
debut for the Texans as the senior from Roseville, California hit .600 with six runs scored and five runs batted
in, including a grand slam in his first game to spark an eight-run second inning. Led by Call, the Texans swept
their season-opening series for the first time since 2012. Call was also walked a team high four times as he hit
boasted an on-base percentage of .800 and a slugging percentage of 1.200 while fielding a perfect 1.000 at
third base.
Pablo Hernandez, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, began 2017 much like he ended 2016 as the All-LSC first
teamer hit .583 with seven RBI in the series sweep of Wiley College... Hernandez posted three doubles and
scored five times... in the 20-4 victory in the series finale, Pablo drove in six and blasted four base knocks.
Elias Aguirre, Angelo State University, started off the 2017 season strong, earning a hit in each of the first
three games. The Midland native hit .400 to help lead the Rams to a series win against Regis in the opening
weekend, including a double and a pair of bunt singles, and added in two walks to get on base as well. He had
three runs scored and an RBI in each of the Rams’ wins.
Chris Cano, UT Permian Basin, opened his 2017 season by blanking University of the Southwest over five
shutout innings, striking out nine batters while only allowing a pair of walks.
Seth Hubert, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, was lights out in his Javelina debut, tossing 6.0 innings of
one-hit ball in the opening day victory... the right-hander struck out eight and the lone hit was an infield single...
Hubert joined the Javelinas after two seasons at Western Texas JC and is from nearby Riviera.
Mashall Kasowski, West Texas A&M University, had a great start to his WT career as he went five innings in
the opener of a 9-1 win at New Mexico Highlands. Kasowski fanned seven and walked three as the Cowboys
only could muster one hit against him and hit .067. He allowed one hit in the fifth, a double, but fanned his
seventh and final batter of his outing to get out of the jam and end the threat.
Joe Hauser, Angelo State University, after an accident in the summer, his future in baseball seemed uncertain.
The senior missed all of fall camp, but returned to the team in January saying he was ready to work, and the
Georgetown, Texas native proved that in his first appearance of 2017. Hauser came in as a relief pitcher to
start the sixth inning of game two against the Rangers and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out three on
the afternoon. He allowed just one baserunner, and after inducing a double play later in the inning faced the
minimum in his four innings of work, earning the win for the Rams.
Evan Pontley, Tarleton State University, made his Tarleton debut by earning the win a 3-0 shutout of Arlington
Baptist in the second game of a three-game series. The right-hander tossed five innings of scoreless ball, only
allowing three base hits and striking out four. Pontley’s efforts helped Tarleton start the season with back-to-
back shutouts for the first time since 1996 under Hall of Fame head coach Jack Allen. Pontley’s efforts helped
