SETTING THE SCENE
The International Fantasy Football League successfully conducted its 10th Annual Draft, and with that, all 12 team owners representing
7 nations and 4 continents know where they will select in the IFFL’s July Draft. The next step is to fill out their wish lists and map out
their strategies in preparation to fill in their respective 16-man rosters for the upcoming 2024 season.
This year’s 1st overall pick will go to Mexico’s RENE CHAVEZ and the DRAGONES. Last year, the Dragones had the 5th overall draft
choice and with it, selected Justin Jefferson, who, between his yanked right hammy and injuries to his QBs things did not go quite as
planned. With Christian McCaffrey on the board, the Dragones have a gift wrapped opportunity add the best all-purpose fantasy player
to their roster, which is exactly who they need seeing how they won’t draft again until the 24th overall pick. However, they haven’t
drafted a running back in the first round since 2020.
At #2, are Canada’s MICHAEL REMIS and REMIS ISLAND, who despite choosing 11th last year, still managed to get their hands on
Travis Kelce and made the post-season. This is the earliest Remis Island has ever picked. They have selected 3rd and 5th in the past,
using both in favor of running backs Ezekiel Elliott (2020) and Le’Veon Bell (2016), respectively. But how can Remis Island possibly
pass on the opportunity to land one of the highest projected wideouts?
The past two seasons have not been kind to the UK’s GORDON DEDMAN and the MEN OF STEEL. Eight of their past nine 1st round
draft picks were used on running backs, but with mixed results, including Saquan Barkley, who the Men of Steel used the 8th overall
pick on, last Summer. With the 3rd overall selection in this draft, will Coach Dedman change his strategy and choose among a long list
of quality WRs?
Drafting 4th are Mexico’s JORGE BOADA and BLEEDING BLUE. In the past 9 drafts, 6 times they went hot ‘n heavy after a top
quarterback with their 1st round pick. Last year they scooped up Jalen Hurts, which seemed like a good move at the time, that is until
Hurts decided to hog the ball, which eventually hurt the team. Case in point: In his last 5 games, Hurts posted a 4/5 TD-INT ratio. Will
Coach Boada break ranks and go after the top running back or wide receiver? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.
Choosing 5th are the UK’s JASON RUTH and the BOWL BOUND MAVERICKS. Last year, for the first time in 9 drafts, the Bowl Bound
Mavs used their 1st pick on a quarterback, specifically Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs won another Super Bowl, but a lot of good that did
for the BB Mavs, seeing how Mahomes’ stats sank in the final 9 weeks of the regular season, when the star QB failed to post 20 of
more fantasy points in 6 of those games. With the 3-top wideouts already taken off the board, including CeeDee Lamb, Coach Ruth still
has a good chance of bringing a blue-chip wideout, and in this case, that would be Tyreek Hill or Ja’Marr Chase.
Last year, Australia’s JOSHUA MANN and STORMYOZ shocked the fantasy football world by passing up the opportunity to pick up
McCaffrey, Hill and Jefferson and, instead, used their 3rd overall pick on David Montgomery, who ranked 16th in fantasy points among
RBs by season’s end. As a die-hard Lions fan, Coach Mann has always drafted heavy for Detroit players. This draft will be no different
as StormyOZ will likely use their 6th overall pick on Amon-Ra St. Brown. Seeing how StormyOZ’s last two drafts, which included the 3rd
and 1st overall picks, resulted in back-to-back 5-9 seasons, clearly that homerism has come at a heavy cost.
Drafting 7th will be the USA’s CORY PROCTER and the PROCTERS who have always let the computer software select their players
for them. Unfortunately, that trust has always betrayed them. In the last two years, the Procters have won just 5 games, including a
3. franchise-low 2 victories, last year. Also note that in the last 9 seasons, the Procters are the only IFFL team who never made the
playoffs. Whether the Procters finally decide to make their own selections or if they will continue to rely on the software, Breece Hall is
the most logical choice.
Last year, with the 12th overall pick, China’s defending World Champions HUI GUO and the JAYMIN shifted attention of selecting
running backs in the 1st round by choosing WR Cooper Kupp. In all, the Jaymin drafted very well, although with Kupp missing half the
season and inconsistency week in and week out among key players resulted in mostly slightly above-average numbers. The Jaymin
still reached the postseason but fell just short of making another World Bowl appearance. With the top-4 wide receivers long gone, the
Jaymin will most likely use their 8th overall draft pick on bruiser Jahmyr Gibbs who those in-the-know consider to be the 3rd best RB
going into next season.
For the 2nd time in a row, the USA’s defending World Champions BERKELY WILEY and the BIG DAWGS will pick 9th overall. As in all
prior 8 drafts, the Big Dawgs chose a running back last year, namely 1,000 yard running back Josh Jacobs. Yet it was selecting Lamb
and Prescott in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that made all the difference in the world. With the top-4 WRs and top-3 RBs off the board, it just
makes practical sense for the Big Dawgs to go after a blue-chip QB or Travis Kelce.
For a second-straight year, Russia’s MIKHAIL REZAKOV and the RUSSIAN HACKERS will select 10th. Last season, Coach Rezakov
took a safe risk by choosing rookie Bijan Robinson. Lightening could strike twice if the Russian Hackers can get their hands on
Robinson who is currently ranked 4th among projected RBs. With a year under Robinson’s belt, the sky’s the limit on just how high his
numbers could soar. Moreover, it could help lift the Russian Hackers back into the playoffs after narrowly missing the postseason in
each of the past two years.
By drafting 11th, China’s YANRAN WANG and SHANGHAI WANG are standing in unfamiliar territory. With most top RBs and WRs
gone, Shanghai Wang has some serious contemplating to do. Should they settle for the next highest rated players at either position, or
should they zoom in on the best QB or TE remaining on the board? Conventional wisdom says to go with Justin Jefferson. Jefferson is
ranked 3rd in most projections among wideouts, but many fantasy team owners are left wondering if whomever starts at QB for
Minnesota justifies such an early round pick.
With the 12nd and 13th overall draft selections, the USA’s GRIDIRON GOOSE and the MIGHTY CYCLONES have a plethora of
choices. Do they scoop up an upper second-tier RB and WR such as Travis Etienne and AJ Brown, or a blue-chip QB and TE, like Joe
Burrow and Sam LaPorta or even George Kittle? Whichever combo the Mighty Cyclones chooses, it better be solid, because they won’t
select again until the 36th overall pick.
