LSC Baseball Weekly Release (03/20/17)
1. LSC BASEBALL
Angelo State and West Texas A&M have matching 18-4 overall records to top the standings with Lone Star
Conference play starting this week.
LSC teams are playing a 10-week schedule with a four-game series against every other team during weeks
8-14 determining the LSC Champion. Conference series scheduled weeks 5-7 will not count toward the league
standings. Each four-game series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and
9-inning contest Sunday.
LSC baseball teams are 109-49 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the teams are currently
26-7 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-3 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Cody Bower, Cameron University, SR, Outfield, Albuquerque, N.M., St. Dius X HS
Bower helped the Aggies to a 3-1 series win over Texas A&M-Kingsville this past weekend. In the four games, he
hit .538 with four runs scored and seven RBI. His best performance came in game three as he went 3-4 with two
runs scored and four RBI in CU’s 8-4 win over the Javelinas. Bower was also a key part of the Aggies come from
behind win in game one, driving in the tying run in the eighth inning before CU added two more in the ninth to
win 4-2. He is now batting .429 with 32 RBI and 25 runs scored on the season, and is ranked in the top-10 of the
conference in just about every hitting category.
PITCHER
Matt Shannon, Angelo State University, JR, Pitcher, Pleasanton, Texas, Pleasanton HS
Shannon threw his second two-hitter of the season Friday night against the No. 4 Buffs as a part of a 7-1 win.
The ace of the Ram staff went seven innings without giving up an earned run, allowing just two hits in that
time. Shannon struck out six and held WT to a batting average of just .083, earning his third win of the season
in the process.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Alex DeLaCruz, Eastern New Mexico University, led the Greyhounds at the plate and defensively this past
weekend, helping ENMU to a 4-0 record and a sweep over UTPB. The second baseman hit at a .563 clip while
scoring seven runs. The Freeport, NY, native scored seven runs and has hit safely in 11-consecutive games while
reaching base in 13-straight. DeLaCruz also logged three multi-hit games to extend his lead to a team-best 15
games.
Jake Hasbrouck, Tarleton State University, had a weekend at the plate as he went. 5-for-10 for a .500 hitting
clip against Lubbock Christian last weekend with a pair of home runs, including a 12th inning walk-off homer
against the Chaps. He scored three runs, drove in four and boasted a 1.200 slugging percentage for the week,
as well.
Mitch Henshaw, Angelo State University, had one of his best weekend’s at the plate in his first year with the
Rams against top ranked WT. The junior got on base more than half the times he came to the plate in the series
and scored a team-second four runs. In the series finale, Henshaw had home run to straight away center and
then followed with his first triple of the season in his next at-bat. His .833 slugging percentage for the week was
more than 100 points higher than any other Ram.
Alex Gonzalez, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, hit .400 in the four-game series versus Cameron... the
sophomore tacked on a double and three RBIs in the final nonconference series before LSC play.
Bodie Bryan, West Texas A&M University, helped spark WT to a series split at No. 2/8 Angelo State going 3
for 9 from the plate with three runs scored, one double, one home run and five RBI, while slugging .778 and
reaching base at a .400 clip. He had nine put outs with three assists and no errors in the field. Bryan hit a two
run home run in the finale to put WT up in the third and then tied the game with a two RBI double to left in the
top of the eighth as WT eventually won 8-6 to earn the series split.
Javarias Banks, Cameron University, showed off some clutch pitching during the Aggies 3-1 series win over
Texas A&M-Kingsville. He was a bookend for the CU pitching staff, allowing no hits and no runs in 2.2 innings
pitched. In game one of the series, Banks came into the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two run
lead and struck out three batters to get his third save of the season. In game two, he came in clutch again
and allowed no runners to reach base while striking out two in 1.2 innings to get the win. Banks now has 17
strikeouts in just 13 innings pitched and ranks in the top-5 in saves in the conference.
Seth Hubert, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, was dominant in the series opener vs. Cameron, tossing 7.0
shutout innings. However, the right-hander picked up a no-decision despite punching out six and allowing just
five hits.
Evan Pontley, Tarleton State University, continued to expand his work load as the junior right-handers threw
a career high seven innings and struck out seven in a 12-inning, walk-off win over Lubbock Christian Saturday.
Joshua Payne, West Texas A&M University, pitched 6.1 innings of three-hit baseball, allowing one earned run
with two walks and seven strikeouts in a 3-1 win over No. 2/8 Angelo State. Payne held ASU to a .143 average
in the game as the Buffs split a doubleheader Saturday and evened the series Sunday with a 2-2 split. It was is
fourth win of the year tying for the team-lead in wins.
Dwight Velarde, Eastern New Mexico University, tossed 6.0 innings of one-run relief in the Greyhounds
11-inning win over UTPB on Saturday. The right-hander held the Falcons to just a .150 average to earn the win in

Cameron
The Cameron baseball team took down No. 25 Texas A&M-Kingsville three games to one in a four game series
this past weekend. Cameron started off the series with two come from behind wins in game one and two, and
then scored eight runs in game three to get the series win before falling in the series finale on Sunday. Bronson
Pulgados and Cody Bower each had seven hits in the four game span, while Bower drove in seven RBI. Javarias
Banks showed he was clutch has he gave up no hits or runs while striking out five in 2.2 innings pitched, getting
a save in game one and the win in game two.
Eastern New Mexico
The Eastern New Mexico baseball team went 4-0 this past weekend, earning a sweep over UTPB. The
Greyhounds were led at the plate by second baseman Alex DeLaCruz who hit at a .563 clip and added seven
runs. Dwight Velarde helped ENMU to an 11-inning win on Saturday with 6.0 innings of one-run ball. The
Greyhounds open up conference play this weekend with a home series against West Texas A&M.
Tarleton State
Tarleton took one of three from Lubbock Christian when the teams met for the first time in 20 years last
weekend. The Texans head to Kingsville this week to begin LSC play.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Javelinas salvaged the final game of the four game set versus Cameron University as Zach Wilson tossed 8.2
innings, striking out 10 in the 3-2 victory over Cameron... in the win, Tim Gleinser went 3-for-4.

West Texas A&M
The No. 4 West Texas A&M baseball team battled back from an 0-2 hole for a 2-2 series split at No. 2/8 Angelo
State this weekend...The Buffs dropped the first two games by the combined score of 16-2, but responded
with two wins in the final two games, including a thrilling 8-6 win Sunday in which the Buffs were trailing 5-2
following the fourth inning...From there, WT plated five runs over the final two innings for the 8-6 win...Senior
defending NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, Joshua Payne, pitched 6.1 innings in game three of a 3-1 win as
he allowed just three hits, walked two and fanned seven for the first win of the series...Junior Bodie Bryan came
up huge in the finale hitting home run to put the Buffs up 2-0 in the third and then hitting a two RBI double to
tie the game in the eighth...The Buffs finish the non-conference games against conference teams 9-3 and open
league play at Eastern New Mexico next weekend...WT was ranked fourth nationally entering last week and was
the top team in the NCBWA Region Poll last week.
