Preface- Edexcel GCSE Chinese 1CN0H V20212
Edexcel is a qualification brand for academic and generation
qualifications from Pearson.
Edexcel began as an awarding organisation following the merger of
London Examinations and BTEC in 1996. After Pearson became our
awarding organisation in April 2013, Edexcel became a qualification
brand, now standing as one of Pearson’s leading brands.
The new Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Chinese
(spoken Mandarin/spoken Cantonese) has been developed to help
students of all abilities progress and develop a passion for languages,
through culturally engaging content, which will enable students to
manipulate and use the target language effectively, independently and
creatively, so that they have a solid basis from which to progress to A
Level or employment.
The content has been structured across five themes. This flexible
programme of study allows time for a focused revision period at the end
of the course.
Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9 - 1) in Chinese (spoken
Mandarin/spoken Cantonese) (1CN0)
First teaching from September 2017, First certification from June 2019

Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level III), having reached an excellent
level in basic Chinese, can communicate on familiar daily topics in a simple
manner.
Test takers who are able to pass the YCT (Level IV) can communicate in Chinese
at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. When travelling in
China, they can manage most forms of communication in Chinese.
III. Test Principles
The new YCT aims to improve Chinese language learners’ self-confidence and
follows the principle of “test-teaching correlation”. It bases the design of the test
on current trends in international Chinese language training and is closely related
to textbook learning procedures. The purpose of the test is to “promote training
through testing” and “promote learning through testing”.
IV. Test Purposes
The YCT is intended for students whose mother tongue is not Chinese. The
results of the test can serve various purposes:
1. A method for Chinese language learners to assess and improve their
proficiency in Chinese.
2. A reference for Chinese language training in schools.
3. A method for Chinese language training institutions to evaluate training
results.
