Compared to the early competition of MySpace, teen users migrate to Facebook due to the attraction of being attached to a community (King, 2009). The amount usage of social media outlets is on the rise along with negative effects it is having on self-esteem.
The popularity of Smartphones is the driving force of social media by allowing users of social media to always stay connected. According to www.emarketer.com, almost 40% of all mobile users are Smartphone users and this number is likely to increase to 50% by the end of 2012 (Fig 1). The demographics of users are representative in all age groups and according to http://www.comscoredatamine.com 6.4% of all smartphone users were between the ages of 13-14Tablets, iPads, etc. along with PC communication at work continue the dialogue
The over and under use of these outlets can have a negative impact on self-esteem as it relates the members of the group. The “social desirability (negative feeling of rejection, positive feeling or online popularity, etc.)” appears to be a defining issue as to why students feel the need to be so transparent
“Social media puts the ‘me’ in media” in that it allows a direct resource to the information that is out there along with people with similar interests and questions (Geoghegan & Monseau, 2011).The desire of students wanting to be part of something is fed through their usage of Facebook through the creation or maintenance of existing relationships. The creation of this social community allow for students to process the current day happenings as a group versus the individuals. It becomes ritualistic
What are people doing on Facebook?What you are saying and showing is being watched It is about looking for approval and creation of a voice
Privacy settings (Fig 3 http://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/) have always been a process of evolution since its inception of Facebook and something that can be rather difficult to keep up with. The risk with this is the visibility of user content to an unintended audience that can have severe consequences. Depending on the privacy settings of a person’s profile, disclosure of private or personal information can be evident simply by clicking on a user’s page

“Friends” should know when you want to be left aloneWith the constant changes in the privacy settings, users are always at risk to have content displayed to a larger audience than intended. The lack of awareness of the information being exposed through Facebook versus the user’s intent of the privacy policy shows a stark difference.
