Balancing my timeShare my findings on formal code analysis
What is a friend? It has been said you will only have 5 true friendsLike you and expect nothing in returnFriends have always been there and were not invented by Facebook
A friend may help you move without being asked or beggedYou will always owe them a return to this favorA true friend will pick you up when you are down
It is built on trust until shown otherwiseThe definition of a ‘friend’ is changing due to the physical disconnect of emotion (Stern, 2007).
Mark ZuckerbergFacebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Huges and Eduardo Saverin and according to their website, “Facebook’s mission is to make the world more open and connected. 483 million daily active users. Connecting with old friends while creating new one’s
Community by Connecting to othersSocial media are an extension. These tools allow for interaction with the public. It is about conversation and dialogueIt is Who Says What To Whom Through Which Medium With what effectIs is “To Whom” as it relates to Uses and Gratifications
It makes everyday a high school reunionPeople use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.” I noted the attendance of my 10 year to 20th showing a decrease from 80% participation to 15% since FB
It has been said you will only have 5 true friends6 degrees of separation is now being shrunkWith FB users it is now down to 4 degrees!845 Million FB users (10% of the world population)69 BILLION FRIENDSHIPS AMONG THEM50% of ALL FB users have 100 friendsAverage number of friends 130
Compared to the early competition of MySpace, teen users migrate to Facebook due to the attraction of being attached to a community (King, 2009). The amount usage of social media outlets is on the rise along with negative effects it is having on self-esteem.
The popularity of Smartphones is the driving force of social media by allowing users of social media to always stay connected. According to www.emarketer.com, almost 40% of all mobile users are Smartphone users and this number is likely to increase to 50% by the end of 2012 (Fig 1). The demographics of users are representative in all age groups and according to http://www.comscoredatamine.com 6.4% of all smartphone users were between the ages of 13-14Tablets, iPads, etc. along with PC communication at work continue the dialogue
The over and under use of these outlets can have a negative impact on self-esteem as it relates the members of the group. The “social desirability (negative feeling of rejection, positive feeling or online popularity, etc.)” appears to be a defining issue as to why students feel the need to be so transparent
“Social media puts the ‘me’ in media” in that it allows a direct resource to the information that is out there along with people with similar interests and questions (Geoghegan & Monseau, 2011).The desire of students wanting to be part of something is fed through their usage of Facebook through the creation or maintenance of existing relationships. The creation of this social community allow for students to process the current day happenings as a group versus the individuals. It becomes ritualistic
What are people doing on Facebook? What you are saying and showing is being watched It is about looking for approval and creation of a voice
Privacy settings (Fig 3 http://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/) have always been a process of evolution since its inception of Facebook and something that can be rather difficult to keep up with. The risk with this is the visibility of user content to an unintended audience that can have severe consequences. Depending on the privacy settings of a person’s profile, disclosure of private or personal information can be evident simply by clicking on a user’s page
What is privacy? If adults struggle with this issue then what about the kids? The average age of users is increasing and currently at 38 (2011)Why is it so important?
Sometimes friends can say too much when they do not understand the concept behind the tool. This medium can be used as an Agenda Setting tool through tools of persuasionThere can be a level of propaganda created by your “friends”Tell you WHAT and HOW to think about it (i.e. intentionality).People appear to be more influential and free in their conversationsFragmentation can become evident if the intent of the conversation takes a different direction
“Friends” should know when you want to be left aloneWith the constant changes in the privacy settings, users are always at risk to have content displayed to a larger audience than intended. The lack of awareness of the information being exposed through Facebook versus the user’s intent of the privacy policy shows a stark difference.
35% participationCitizenship agreementIt is the responsibility of the athletes representing Logan-Rogersville Schools to be good citizens at all times. Anything less is unacceptable!Observed behaviors on social media sites can be in violation to thisNot understanding the privacy settings for content display can effect participation
But, kids are not as dumb as you think. It is hard to enforce something that can be easily altered. What is reality here? The Cat or the Kids?Ambiguity is huge!
This is a powerful weapon Reputations are built from this mediumWhether the intent or notSo as the popularity of this site builds along with the average age, students may be forced to look for other avenues for community.
