Mass or Niche?
My film ‘Swimming In Silence’ is aimed at a mass audience
rather than a niche due to its high relatability being a drama. A
wide variety of people find the drama genre to be interesting
and engaging no matter the age, gender or class.
Although most drama films are aimed at a mass audience, the
theme of loosing a child and depression can be aimed at a
younger adolescent niche audience.
Finally films that appeal to a mass audience tend to generate a
larger income than those in the niche market. Another pro is
that a film like mine would not cost a lot to make so it would in
turn make a larger profit.

Age
The events that take place in my film would not usually happen
to an adolescent or young children as they are either not
capable of having children or they are not mentally, physically
or financially able. Therefore this means that my film would be
easier to relate to parents in between the age group of
approximately 27 – 45 and that would be my target age group
for the audience.
Although many people watch a film because of its relatability,
more tend to watch a film because they are generally interested
in the topic and story line. So saying this, I am aiming my film at
an audience between the ages of 27-45 but I can not predict
how many younger or older people will take an interest in the
topic and decide to view it.

Gender
Due to the protagonist being a woman in my film it would be
stereotypically easier for women to relate to the story line and
empathies with her.
Although in recent years there has been a huge increase in
gender equality and equal rights to both genders. This could
theoretically mean that a niche group of men could be facing
similar problems to the protagonist more so than certain
women, which in turn means that I can not single out a
particular gender to aim the film at but instead be open to the
possibility of both men and women having similar interest in the
film.

Class/Social Status
Because the protagonist in my film is representing a single
working class mother, many modern family's and single parents
would be engaged while watching. In the past 20 years women
have become equal to men and in some cases they are even
more powerful, which is an inspiration to others who now adopt
the ‘strong independent’ attitude. My protagonist does not show
the strong characteristics of an independent woman but I'm
sure that class of woman will be very engaged with a film like
mine.
Although I have mainly aimed my film at the working mother
class, the drama genre is meant to be relatable meaning that
no matter what class people will still want to see my film.

Location
The location of my target audience would be predominantly in
the United Kingdom and the United States of America due to
the easy understanding of the language of the film and
because the theme is more common in more economically and
socially developed countries.
I would also like to aim the location of my audience to be in
areas that can not normally relate to the themes of the film (yes
I know this contradicts the principles of a dram film) because
this would create a greater awareness of the topic and could
possibly lead to a higher interest, meaning if this film was
successful there is now another market to aim the second film
at.
