1. Task 3 - What kind of media
institution might distribute your
media product and why?
2. What is distribution?
Distribution is when a film distributor is responsible
for the marketing, setting release date and deciding if a
film goes into cinema or to other platforms for example
DVD.
Here are some examples of distribution companies;
20th century fox productions, arrow films, Icon Film
Distribution and Paramount Pictures UK.
3. Who would be interested in our
opening sequence?
In previous years here are some examples of the films that some of the distribution
companies I looked at in the previous slide have released.
20th century fox productions: Trolls, Ice Age 5, Kung Fu panda, Alvin and the
Chipmunks. As you can tell these well known movies are targeted at younger children
and these movies will not have the same target market that we have for our thriller
opening sequence.
Icon Films Distributor: Alpha dog, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Fairytale. These movies have
more of a range and some of them are targeted at younger viewers whilst some of
them have more of a deep plot and the target audience is a lot older, these movies
can relate to our opening sequence as our target market is older teenagers, young
adult. Therefore this distribution company may be interested in our movie/opening
sequence.
4. Who would be interested in our
opening sequence?
I found a movie that was distributed by Film Nation
Entertainment that had many similarities to our opening
sequence. This movie is called ‘Crush’. I believe that our movies
are very similar and the main plot has some similarities. I think
that If our film was going to be distributed it would be beneficial
for it to be done by Film Nation Entertainment as they have
experiences with thriller movies like ours.
5. Who’s our opening sequence going to
appeal to?
I think that our film will mainly appeal to UK audiences and may also be
popular in America. I think this because our film is targeted at teenagers
because they can relate to the characters and their situations throughout the
film. I think this will also appeal to American citizens because they have a
similar high school system so therefore the teenagers can also relate in the
same way that English students can which means they are more likely to want
to view the film. I think it will be harder for other people in different countries
to want to watch and understand the film due to them having different
normalities to us (British) and Americans.
6. Marketing Strategies
I think that if our movie/opening sequence was going to be promoted a
beneficial way to do it would be to use modern promotion methods such as;
Social Media websites, TV adverts (but this would depends on how large our
budget was) and also radio adverts etc. I think these methods would be most
effective because our target audience is young adults/ older teenagers.
Therefore these methods are more likely to work rather than things such as
promoting our movie in a newspaper because our target market is more likely
to use social media.
7. Self-Distribution
I think our movie would be most popular in UK cinemas due to the fact that this then
means that it is open to everyone all ages so therefore it is easily watchable and this
will increase viewers. I also think it would be beneficial if it was put onto Netflix. I
think this because of our target market and their ages for example our target age
range is around 15-25 and these ages are the majority of people using Netflix.
However if our film was aimed at an older target audience I wouldn’t think it would be
a good idea to put it onto Netflix as a lot of older people will not have a Netflix
account.
