Question 4 : Who would be the audience for your media product
1. QUESTION 4 ; WHO
WOULD BE THE
AUDIENCE FOR
YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT
Natalia Wilson-Davis
2. CLASS AND THE JINCAR SCALE.
Initially I wanted my target audience to fall into the age bracket of 16-25 , but
however changed this as my audience research showed that 15-34 year olds visit
the cinema the most and due to this many of those individuals that fall into the age
bracket are still in full time education including secondary school , college and
university and therefore are displayed as D or E on the jincar scale as many of
them have no income as for a majority of these individuals it is difficult to maintain
educational success and balance a job . The social grades of D and E relate to
those at the lowest and the lower class this is of course due to the idea that
majority of the youth don’t have occupations that will provide them with income.
The social grade of
E and D are were
majority of my
target audience fall
among.
3. PSYCHOGRAPHIC PROFILING
My target audience fall into explores and aspires within the psychographic profiling
scale. My reason for targeting my audience at explores is due to the idea that they
take an interest in seeking discovery and being adventurous and therefore
heightens the advantage to my film product as the characteristics of explores
loving to experience new and current things refer to the fact that they may then
instantly be drawn to go and watch my film product in cinemas which could
increase attention of my film via word of mouth or social networking sites as my
young target audience keep up with the latest and advanced technologies and
social medias.
Also aspires fall into the target demographic as they are the ones who strive to
achieve the best possible and I believe that those who are in still full time education
or even in an occupation are determined to increase their success whether
educational or promotional fall in to the aspires category and all of this hard work to
achieve a higher status can be released by these individuals going to the cinema to
relief some the stress or extra weight by the adrenaline of my thriller movie assisting
to discourage the stress.
4. PSYCHOGRAPHIC PROFILING
Also aspires seek status and therefore due to the fact that
my film product which is called ‘Unknown’ falls into the
genre of a thriller/horror this may drive them to go to the
cinema to watch it to prove that they are courageous
enough giving them status and in reverse not someone
who is delicate and powerless. Also thriller films have
become a big trend among young people as within their
leisure time they go to the cinemas with a group of peers to
see if the fear factor of a thriller will affect them or not and
this popular trend will be accepted by aspires as they follow
major current trends
5. AGE GROUP:
Initially I wanted my audience to range from 16-25 to easily be able to connect to
the main characters in my film product as they also fall into the same age bracket.
However due to my audience research I quickly found that those aged between 15-
34 were the age group in which visit the cinema the most and therefore knew that I
would have to target it at a wider age range so that my film product would gain as
much popularity and attention as possible also this choice of targeting my film
product at 15-34 instead of a smaller a younger age range was made with ease as
both the main characters fall within this age bracket which would still allow the
characters and audience to still easily connect.
Also Due to the tragic and horrific content within thrillers I had to take in to
consideration the age certificate in which would be allocated to my film. Horrors
and thrillers age certificate vary between 15 and 18 and due to the fact there is no
extremely traumatising events, no foul language and sexual content I then came to
the conclusion my film product would a 15 which perfectly fell into my target
audience age group.
The certificate I allocated to my film after considering the
content of my film. In terms of horror and thrillers At 15 there
can be strong threat and horror as long as there is no
sustained focus on sadistic or sexualised threat.
Displayed in my research
found from pearl and dean
it showed me that the most
popular age range to go to
cinema is those aged 15-
24.
6. AGE GROUP.
Also the lower proportion of the target age group are going through adolescence
and usually testing boundaries as they go through a quiet disobedient age therefore
take on a rebellious attitude by staying out late with peers and watching films with
such terror which add to the thrill as part of the rebellious phase, however those in the
higher proportion of my target audience (21-34) will also enjoy the thrill of my thriller
film as they are more experienced in watching such films and therefore anticipate to
see what my film product has to offer.
I also thought to target my audience at 15-34 year olds as I fall within this particular
age group and therefore know what will appeal to this youthful age range making it
easier to attract my target audience also people aged around the same age as me
answered the questionnaire allowing me to input on decisions this came about as I
was the mise-en-scene person of my group and therefore ensured that I made
convenient and important decisions to try to appeal to those in this age group. An
example of this was through costume decisions as I made sure both the main
characters had trendy and stylish clothing from high end fashionable shops such as
River Island and new look (popular places in which a lot of young people shop.)
7. RACE.
As my main characters are white British and white Hispanic, this
does not mean that my target audience is white as I believe that
those of any ethnical background may want to watch this film and
also due to research of the questionnaires it showed me that no
ethnical minorities were significantly popular to one another but
overall all ethnicities were equal allowing me to then target all
ethnic backgrounds.
8. GENDER:
My target audience for my film product will be mainly females however may attract
males. Females are my main focus in terms of gender for my film as both the main
characters are female and therefore will be drawn to their fashion sense but also will
empathise with the protagonist of the film as females are usually seen as more
sensitive and due to this will quickly connect with the main character as they will then
gain an emotional connection driving them to empathise with the protagonist whilst in
danger. Although my main target audience will be the females, males also are a part
of my target audience as they themselves are the ones who are seen as more
courageous and therefore will be the ones to go and watch horror films.
Male gaze theory: (Laura Mulveys) the male gaze theory refers to the way the male
individuals look at females as more of a sexual object due to their appearance.
Presented in my film are the main characters that fit typical conventions such as white
females with blonde / brown long hair and blue and grey eyes which are seen as
conventionally beautiful and therefore my result in male audiences watching for the
purpose of ‘gazing’ and looking at the female characters.
Lastly due to my audience research I have seen that females are the ones to go to
the cinema more and this heightened my reasons for targeting my audience to
females.
From research I learnt that the gender
in which visits the cinema the most are
females , then driving me to help
establish my target audience to
females,
9. INTERESTS OF MY TARGET AUDIENCE.
Outings with peers
Finding out celebrity gossip
Follow a soap or drama such as EastEnders and
Breaking bad.
Attending festivals / Concerts
Buying and keeping up with the latest fashion trends
Cinema outings
Listening and keeping up with popular music
A lot of time spent on social networking sites
Shop in very fashionable and trendy shops such as
Topshop ,new look and River Island
10. USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
Escapism:
Due to my target audience being of a young age group
and generally going through the stress of GSCSE, A levels,
university or being newly employed and may want a way to
escape this and therefore will spend their time with their
peers going out for a fun and entertaining time as a way of
relieving and escaping the stress. Overall as my target
audience want relief they will then go to the cinema as way
of escaping the negativity and stress.
11. RESEARCH: During the process of research I carried out audience research, a focus group and a
questionnaire in order to heighten and build knowledge about my potentially target
audience and to ensue their needs were catered for.
Audience research: from my audience research it displayed to me that the most
popular age group ranged between 15-34 which then helped me to decided on my
target audience. Also displayed that females are the ones that visit the cinema the
most and this also helped me to consider the fact that by making them my main
audience will result in film gaining a high income. And also that those of a higher
social class visit the cinema more than those of a lower social class this maybe due to
the fact those in a higher social class are in a higher profession. Majority of this
research was taken from pearl and dean.
Questionnaire: the questionnaire in tailed ideas about ethnicity, age, gender and
preferred genres. The results of ethnicity displayed a range of different races therefore
explaining that I could target my audience at a range of different ethnic
backgrounds. The age group results from my questionnaire displayed a youthful age
group ranging from 15-20 , this helped me broaden my ideas about choosing the
main age group I would target however later stretched to those who are slightly older
due to other audience research. Also helped me develop ideas about what gender I
would target my product to and with significant figures found that it was females who
visit the cinema the most. Lastly I found that horror was the most popular genre and
from this helped me consider a number of different factors to take into account such
as making sure there wasn’t particular language used and other things that would
effect the gender, age or ethnicity of my target audience.
Focus group: we then had a focus group which mainly looked at what they wanted to
see within a horror film which generally helped me to understand what type of horror
film I would need to produce taking in to account the types of location, sound and
many other factors which when then help me base these choices around the needs
of my target audience.
