Question 2:
1. Media
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Some of the social groups represented in my product are those such as the
gender that is represented in the casting of the opening scene. This is as there
is a mixture of both male and female actors. This should help in making it
clear to the audience who the film is aimed at, as early as the first few
opening scenes. This is as the target audience watching would see the
mixture in gender of the cast and automatically assume it’s aimed at both
males and females. Secondly the age represented in the first few scenes
would also help in making the target audience of the film obvious as there is
a clear indication of youths aged between 16-22 this should then help to
further encourage the audience to think that as the film is played by youths
their age it should portray common scenes that they can relate with.
Furthermore the class portrayed in the first opening scenes is a strong
indication and almost a giveaway to the intended target audience as the
actors can be seen in a dress sense that is both modern and that of the
younger generation. This as well as to the finer details such as the branding
on the clothing should make the target audience have a common
association with the actors as they can be seen in similar clothing that they
themselves would wear. Finally the race of the actors being that of a mixed
and black background would also emphasize the intended target audience
as society has a tendency to relate with those within a similar race group.
Although this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not to be seen by those who can’t
racially relate to the actors, it does indicate the film is a clear representation
of the multiculturalism within London.
In my product gender is represented in a way which is not stereotypically
common. This can be seen in a few different ways such as the gender of the
stalker being a girl. This would be seen as a spin to the more general
association that stalkers tend to be men of middle aged and older stalking
females of a younger age. This is clearly not the case in this film as the stalker
is a girl who although her identity is hidden it can be assumed to be that of a
youth due to her relationship with another actor. My choice in not following
the common stereotype would make the audience appreciate that this is not
a typical film where the casting and plot is predictable hopefully enticing
them to carry on watching. Furthermore the clothing of the stalker would also
not fit a stereotypical female as she can be seen in clothing of not only a
male but of someone who is most commonly portrayed in the media as a
‘gangster’. This would then further defy the audiences stereotypical view of a
girl most commonly dressed in a lady like manner and also of females being
2. gangsters. This would then make it clear that this film does not follow
common stereotype.
