30. Upper Class Heian Women
Could inherit and keep property,
although usually a man administered it.
Law protected them from physical
violence. (?)
Most married women continued living in their birth
homes, preventing husbands or mothers-in-law from
holding too much power or influence over their day-to-day
lives.
Education of Court Women: poetry,
letter writing, calligraphy, music, the
preparation of incense and perfumes,
and fashion.
Did not have the right to choose their
husbands, nor was strict monogamy practiced. http://gallery.sjsu.edu/heia

34. LLoowweerr CCllaassss WWoommeenn
• No writing and not many
images survive.
• “Illness sketches”
– Fat woman as an example
of a disease.
– conservative white robes -
completely unlike court
women's Juni-Hitoe (twelve
unlined robes) .
Editor's Notes
Traditional Belief system of Japan
Last Emperor in the world! Oldest royal house! Princess was a Harvard – educated diplomat before marrying – now suffers depression & seclusion. Little Princess cannot rule unless law is changed…
Syncretism with Chinese neo-Confucian Architecture
Same time as Europe, but developed independently.
Unlike in Europe women were not esteemed in any way – no chivalry, no religious overtone
Ethnocentrism – “really happy”?????
Men involved in warfare, property holdings, some Confucian / Buddhist writing, record-keeping…
