2. PM Modi to participate in G20 Extraordinary Leaders’
Summit on Afghanistan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the G20
Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit on Afghanistan on October 12,
2021 through video conferencing. The Indian Prime Minister has
been invited to be a part of the summit by Italy, which holds the
current G20 presidency.
The key agenda of the G20 Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit is a
discussion on response to humanitarian needs and access to
basic services and livelihood. The other issues that will be
discussed during the summit include security and fight against
terrorism, human rights, migration and mobility.
The summit will focus on the humanitarian aspect of the
Afghanistan crisis following the takeover of Afghanistan by
Taliban insurgents in August 2021.

3. India’s first mobile-based e-voting system
developed in Telangana
Telangana announced on October 6, 2021, that it has developed
India’s first smartphone-based-e-voting solution, in the face of the
Coronavirus pandemic that has rushed the entire world into all-digital
operations.
According to an official release, the solution has been successfully
developed and tested while a dry run, in the form of a dummy
election, is being conducted in the Khammam district in the state.
The registration on the application for the users is open from October
8-18 and the dummy voting will be taking place on October 20.
The release further added that even though the initial scope was
limited to a subset of citizens in the state, the dry is open for all the
citizens in the district.

4. United Nations declares access to a clean
environment a human right
The United Nations Human Rights Council on October 8,
2021, recognized access to a clean and healthy environment as a
fundamental right.
The move by the global body has added its weight to the global fight
against climate change as well as its devastating consequences on
humans.
The vote was passed in UNHRC with overwhelming support, despite the
criticism in the lead-up from some of the nations, notably the United
States and Britain, the highly-developed countries in the world.
Another proposal led by the Marshall Islands (an independent island
country) to create a new special rapporteur on climate change was also
approved by the United Nations Rights Council on October 8.

5. Indian railways launches two long haul
freight trains 'Trishul', 'Garuda'
IndianThe Indian Railways on October 7, 2021, successfully launched and
operated two long-haul freight trains named Trishul and Garuda for the first
time over South Central Railway.
Both the long-haul freight trains include empty open wagons for loading
coal meant for thermal power plants.
These trains are twice or multiple times longer than the normal freight trains.
These two long-haul freight trains will aid in providing an effective solution
to the problem of capacity constraints in critical rail sections.
Trishul is the first long-haul freight train of South Central Railway that has 177
wagons. It was launched on October 7 from the Kondapalli station of the
Vijayawada division to the Khurda division of the East Coast Railway.
The following day on October 8, South Central Railway operated another
similar freight train named Garuda from Raichur of Guntakal division to
Manuguru of Secunderabad division.

6. Nobel Prize in Economics 2021: David Card,
Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens Wins
Economics Nobel
David Card, Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens have been
jointly awarded the 2021 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic
Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
David Card has been awarded the 2021 prize in economic
sciences for his empirical contributions to labour economics.
Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens have been awarded
the 2021 prize in economic sciences “for their methodological
contributions to the analysis of causal relationships.”

7. India, Denmark inks four MoUs, including on
skill development, groundwater resources
India and Denmark on October 9, 2021, exchanged four agreements
following a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi and his Danish
counterpart Mette Frederiksen.
The Prime of Denmark arrived in New Delhi early on October 9 and
held bilateral talks with PM Modi. On her visit, she also called on
President Ram Nath Kovind and interacted with the students, think
tanks, and members of civil society.
As per the External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, the
Danish PM’s visit to India is an opportunity to review and further
the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership.
Mette Frederiksen’s visit to India is also significant as she is the first
head of state visiting India since COVID-19 restrictions are in place
since March 2020. Earlier in 2021, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar
had also visited Denmark.

8. Iraq Elections 2021: Why is it important? UN's
role, regional impact
Iraq Parliamentary elections were held on October 10, 2021 after
several challenges with the hope of bringing in key reforms.
The initial turnout was reported to be around 41 percent, not nearly
as low as election officials had earlier feared.
The Iraq Parliamentary Elections, which were originally scheduled
for next year, were called in early due to massive anti-government
protests in Iraq's capital Baghdad in 2019 during which thousands of
people were injured and over 600 died.
Though the authorities gave in and called the early elections, the
death toll and the heavy-handed security crackdown at that time
prompted many who took part in the protests to later call for a
boycott of the vote.

9. AQ Khan, ‘father of Pakistan's Nuclear bomb’,
dies of Covid-19
Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, a scientist known as the father of Pakistan’s
Nuclear Programme, passed away at the age of 85 on October 10,
2021, after a brief illness.
The nuclear physicist had faced criticism in 2004 when he was forced
to accept the responsibility for nuclear technology proliferation and
was forced to live a life of official house arrest.
Reportedly, AQ Khan was brought to the hospital early in the morning
as he was facing difficulty in breathing.
As per the doctors, Khan’s health deteriorated after bleeding in his
lungs and he could not survive after his lungs collapsed.
The Interior Minister of Pakistan, Sheikh Rasheed informed that all the
efforts were made to save his life.

10. Maharashtra Bandh today: Shops shut,
transport services hit
The Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra has called for a
state-wide bandh on October 11 in protest against
Lakhimpur Kheri violence in Uttar Pradesh on October 3rd
that claimed the lives of at least eight people including 4
farmers.
All three coalition partners Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP) and Congress appealed to the people to
wholeheartedly support Maharashtra Bandh.

12. China – Taiwan Tension: Why is China
increasing its military pressure on Taiwan?
China on October 4, 2021, sent a record number of at least 150 military fighter
jets, bombers, and other warplanes into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone
(ADIZ) for the fourth consecutive day wherein Taiwan detected at least 52 planes
including 36 fighter jets, 12 H-6 bombers, 4 fighter jets, 2 transport aircraft, and 2
surveillance aircraft. Starting October 1, 2021, Beijing marked the founding of the
People’s Republic of China by sending 38 warplanes including nuclear-capable H-
6 bombers into Taiwan’s ADIZ. Following the next day, it marked a new record air
incursion with 39 planes and the next day with 16 more planes.
The air incursions on October 4 came in hours after the US condemned China for
provocative and destabilizing military activity into Taiwan’s ADIZ for the past three
consecutive days. “We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic
pressure and coercion against Taiwan,” stated the US State Department. In
September 2021, Beijing reportedly flew 117 planes into Taiwan’s ADIZ.

13. PM Modi launches Indian Space Association
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Indian Space Association
(ISpA) on October 11, 2021 through video conferencing.
While speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said that our approach to
Space reforms is based on four pillars - freedom to private sector in
innovation, role of government as an enabler, to make youth future-
ready and to see the Space sector as a resource for the progress of
common man.
PM Modi stated that earlier the space sector was synonymous with
government. "We changed this mindset, brought in innovation in Space
sector & gave the mantra of cooperation between Govt & startups. This
new mantra is necessary because this is not the time of linear innovation

14. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presents
gallantry, meritorious medals to Indian Coast
Guard
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 9, 2021, presented gallantry
and meritorious service medals President’s Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) and
Tatrakshak Medal (TM) to Indian Coast Guard personnel at the
Investiture Ceremony being held at National Stadium Complex in New
Delhi. On October 8, 2021, Singh had greeted the Indian Air Force
personnel and their families on the occasion of 89th Air Force Day for
their service to the nation.
While presenting the gallantry and meritorious service medals to Indian
Coast Guard personnel, Singh noted that the Indian Coast Guard began
with 4 to 6 boats and now it has more than 150 ships, 66 aircraft. Today
it holds an important place in the world’s best maritime forces, he
added.
Singh further highlighted that the professionalism, ever-growing nature
of the Indian Coast Guard infuses confidence among the countrymen
that our brave Indian Coast Guards are keeping our national maritime
interests safe.

15. KV Subramanian steps down as Chief
Economic Adviser after three-year tenure,
will return to academics
The Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) KV
Subramanian announced on October 8, 2021, that he has
decided to return to academia after the completion of his
three-year term in the Finance Ministry of India.
Subramanian in a statement said, “I have decided to return
back to academia following the completion of my 3-year
fulfilling tenure as the Chief Economic Adviser, Government
of India.”
The Indian Government is yet to announce KV Subramanian’s
successor. In a statement confirming his
resignation, Subramanian also thanked Prime Minister Modi
and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for the opportunity
provided to him.
