2. Bhai Dooj 2021
On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, sisters apply red tilak on their
brother’s forehead and perform an aarti ceremony for their brothers
while vowing to protect their brothers from all evils and praying for
their long-life and well-being.
The tilak and arti ceremony is performed on Bhai Dooj shubh
muhurat. The brothers in return offer them gifts or cash.
Hindu mythology and legends tell stories about the beginning of
Bhai Dooj as a festival in two prominent stories, one about Lord and
his sister Subhadra, and another about Lord Yamraj and his sister
Yamuna. The Bhai Dooj festival holds a special significance for the
brother-sister bond.
Legends tell that after slaying the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna
visited his sister Subhadra who greeted him with a tilak ceremony
and offered him sweets and flowers.
In another story, legends tell that when Lord Yamraj had gone to visit
his twin sister Yamuna, she greeted him with a tilak ceremony and
fed him sweets. Hence, Bhai Dooj came into being with tilak and
aarti ceremony have a significant part.
