2. Ellie Gouldings magazine advert contains many conventions that are seen in
almost all magazine adverts. Her name is stated clearly in the middle of the
advert so it immediately stands out to the consumers. As well as this, the
album title is placed directly under her name in order to draw attention to
what she is releasing as well as linking the artist to the album. The picture
used also links well with this as the golden colour of her text is reflected in
the lights in her hair and behind her, further linking the artist to the album
and the image. The main image is a very simple shot of Ellie but is greatly
effective as it has clear relevance to the album name, as I’ve stated with the
lights. At the bottom of the advert there are reviews by renowned
magazines/music experts which are both very positive, so entice the reader
to purchase the album as they will most likely be influenced by these
reviews as they would find this information trust worthy.
3. Jessie J’s magazine advert is very similar to Ellie Goulding’s in terms of
the overall layout and styling. There is a main image of her in very heavy
makeup and dramatic dress, which takes up the majority of the advert. Below is
a black box containing all the information about the album in a clear, bold and
simple font in capital letters. The image is very bold as her hair matches the
dark box below along with her nails and lip stick. This creates an overall
powerful and devious look about her, which is appealing to the eye and reflects
her artistic style. As well as this, her name is in a gold text below her face, in the
middle of the advert to draw attention to it. This allows the reader to
immediately associate the picture with her and recognise who she is as a person
and also an artist through the metallic gold, R&B-esque text. The information
included at the bottom shows the top singles on the album to entice the
readers to buy the album by showing her well known songs. There is also a
website to link her target audience to her own website. This is a very effective
technique as it is a common trait that audiences are regular users of the
internet and social networking sites, so would find no problem using the
information on the advert in terms of web 2.0.
4. Delilah’s magazine advert isn’t as similar to Jessie J’s and Ellie Goulding’s as it
is a bit more of an artistic advert as opposed to a conventional full bleed
close up as the focus. However, it is still similar, especially to that of Ellie
Goulding in terms of the overall layout and styling. The main image of Delilah
stands out as her skin colour contrasts with the black background allowing
her to be the main focal point of the poster. There is a main image of Delilah
in light makeup and a slicked back long pony tail, shown naked and revealing
her tattoos. This adheres to Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theorem as she is
presented as vulnerable in her closed body language but also domineering as
she has a fist holding her pony tail. This allows Mulvey’s theory to adhere to
the magazine advert as these perceptions of women are highly sexualised
and are thus emphasised by the camera. Surrounding her is a triangle that
points into her body, allowing the focus to remain on her. The triangle stems
from her name and album title above her which ties in well with the title of
the album ‘”from the roots up”. The text is very clear cut and crisp and allows
the advert to look very simplistic but slick and cool. Below is a darker black
background where there are reviews by renowned magazines/music experts
which are both very positive, so entice the reader to purchase the album as
they will most likely be influenced by these reviews as they would find this
information trust worthy.
