The Encyclopaedia Iranica (EIr) is an academic reference work dedicated to the study of Iranian civilization in Eurasia. As an international, collaborative project it covers all aspects of Iranian history and culture. The project is based at the Center for Iranian Studies of Columbia University. Its compilation is overseen by its editor Ehsan Yarshater, Hagop Kevorkian Professor Emeritus of Iranian Studies, and a team of Consulting Editors. All entries are commissioned by invitation only and subject of peer review. The first printed fascicle appeared in 1982, and since 2010 the Open Access edition on the Internet has become the EIr's focus, but printed fascicles continue to be published.
