ROUGH SKETCHES
ā€“ FRONT COVER
The masthead is also known
as the title of the magazine.
The masthead here is placed
the top left hand corner very
much like ā€˜Qā€™ magazine. The
masthead should give off a
sense of brand identity and
should be the same on each
magazine that is produced.
The strapline is a short,
snappy slogan associated to
the magazine. This is usually
placed near the masthead
and I have decided to place it
below the masthead.
The main image is placed at the
center of the magazine and would
usually overlap the masthead. This
can be any type of technical code, I
decided to use the technical code of
a medium close up.
The barcode would usually
contain the price, issue and
date of the magazine. This
ā€˜informsā€™ (Katz) the user
before they decide to buy the
magazine.
The convention of a puff
promotion is placed on the
magazine to entice the
reader to buy the magazine.
This is usually something free,
or something the audience
can win.
Cover lines are usually placed down the left and
right hand side of the magazine. These are
secondary stories and will tell the reader what
will be inside the magazine. You can usually tell
the genre of the magazine by reading the cover
lines.
Rough sketches ā€“ double page
spread
On a double page spread there will either be a feature article
which will look at a topic in depth of an interview. I have
decided to use an interview with an artist. The interview will
consist of differentiated questions and answers.
A common convention on a double page spread is a
headline. This is usually at the top of the page and will be
bold to stand out to the audience.
Another common convention is a stand first. The is a short
introduction to the feature article or the interview.
On a double page spread there can be one main image or an
array of images. I have chosen to do my double page spread
on the artist on the front cover.
Another common convention is a drop capital. A drop capital
is the first letter of a sentence made bigger. This will highlight
to the reader where to start reading.
Another common convention is a pull quote. This is a piece of
writing pulled from the interview or feature article to grab the
reader attention. This usually would be something
controversial or interesting.

PROFIT AND LOSS BREAKDOWN
For the first year of my magazine being released, the loss to profit ratio will be far outbalanced as
the loss will be much bigger in comparison of the profits that the magazine will bring to the
business for the first section of the magazines release. For the first year it will be a lot harder to
sell etc. due to the magazine being new and no one will know of it meaning that they will not
know how good it is, this will mean that the magazine will not be selling nearly as much that it will
in the future. For the first issue of the magazine the profits will be a lot smaller as there will be less
adverts that will want to promote in the magazine, this will mean that to get more money from
the magazine it will take time as the bigger companies wont want to have adverts in a new
magazine that doesn'tā€™t sell a lot.
After the first year of selling the magazine, I will have all of the costs put together. For example,
there will be a total cost of Ā£361,656 as this is to spend on the equipment and making sure that
all the staff have the correct equipment to go through everyday and compete their work. To make
this all happen I will be working in an office, this will cost Ā£220 per month, this price comes with
every including the desks and other extras that are required in an office. After everything is all set
up we would then need to review the pricing of the staff as a whole, looking at how much it is
going to cost each month. The total cost every year for the total amount of money that will go
into paying the salaries of the employees will come to, Ā£737,097.
PRINTING QUOTES AND COST
For creating my magazine I have chosen
to make it with 15,000 copies allowing
me to spend as little as possible but still
giving out enough magazines that will be
able to reach a reasonable audience.
Making a bundle of one magazine is a lot
cheaper in comparison to printing a
single magazine multiple times. To print
one magazine it came to Ā£20.35 whereas
if I was to print 15,000 magazines it
would come to Ā£5,239.

HAND DRAWN DRAFTS CONCLUSION
MO
Front cover
Out of the two designs I came up
with, I prefer the one on the right
because with the way they are laid
out they nearly replicated my
competitorsā€™ magazines, but with my
magazine I will make sure that my
content a lot better than ā€˜Billboardā€™.
Double page
Looking at my double page designs, I
think that the top one is better. This is
because its layout is much neater and
I think that I will be able to produce a
magazine with that specific layout
much easier than the bottom design.
Catalyst
Front cover
As for these designs, I prefer the
design on the right because is more
unique when its compared to other
competitors magazines.
Double page
For this, I will be using the design on
the top because, I prefer it a lot more
in comparison to the other design
and I think with having more space
for images it then makes it look more
interesting to the audience
HOUSE STYLE - MO
Colour scheme
For MO magazine I will be using monochrome with hints of yellow. This
is because using black and white will show the contrast of my
magazine and how my magazine can bring sunlight to the darkness
using the hints of yellow. I have decided to using yellow because I
connotes sunlight and joyfulness.
Font style
For MO magazine I will be using the font style is known as ā€˜Arial
rounded MT boldā€™. The reason for this is, I think that is a great font to
go with my masthead, also because of my younger targeted audience
as the font is rounded and bold it shows the informal side to my
magazine, as I donā€™t intend on targeting anyone over the age of 25 and
that aren't in the socio-economic needs sector that I have chosen.
Social media
MO magazine will be a synergy with all social medias. This is because I
will then be able to reach out to a lot more people and possibly on a
global scale eventually. Using the most popular social medias such as
Instagram, Snapchat and twitter to promote and give my audience
updates and possible exclusives.
FONT STYLES
For MO magazine I have chosen these fonts because they
reflect my intentions with this magazine, as you can see with
some of my chosen fonts are more suited to my audience.
Looking at font number three, it definitely target my audience
of the socio-economic needs table which was from C2- E, this
has an age range of about 15-25 meaning that I will need to
make sure that my fonts are more informal as it will attract the
targeted audience.
MASTHEAD IDEAS
Looking at the mind map on the side you can
see that I had several other ideas of what I
wanted to call my magazine. From inspirations
such as NME, Q and Billboard, I have used
their magazines as inspiration into making my
magazines. I have chosen MO because it
denotes ā€˜Monthly Ovationā€™ which connotes
the magazine will be produced monthly to
ā€˜entertainā€™ (Katz) the audience and using the
word ā€˜ovationā€™ connotes the magazine will be
professional and the audience will applaud
the magazine for being a brand new and
good.

IMAGES OF INFLUENCE
The magazine above are some of the magazines that I will be
trying to replicate it in my own way on my front covers. The
positioning of the masthead and model are the few things that I
will be trying to repeat. For my MO magazine, I will be repeating
the positioning and size of the model image and positioning of
the magazine logo. Further to this, looking at the front cover of
NME I will be using their similar colour scheme making it plain
and simple for everyone.
DRAFT INTERVIEW
Hi Frankie, how are you doing?
Hello, I'm doing great thanks, how have you been keeping
mate?
I've been amazing, thank you for asking! Lets get into this
interview then shall we?
Go on Iā€™m more than ready.
For many weeks now, there has been a rumour going
around about a collaboration with someone big, is that
true?
Yes this is true, however I am most definitely not prepared to
release this to anyone until I am ready to get to work with this
artist, sorry for the disappointment.
That's ok, I totally understand that you want to keep it as
a surprise.
I am very proud of this new project, I feel that it could be one
of my biggest pieces of work that I have ever done; its going
to something else!
Well something else that people want to know is that in
some of your most recent singles, there have been some
suspicious remarks to really specific things, are they
relating to something that has actually happened to you?
Wow. You really have looked into my work with great detail
haven't you. With some of my remarks, they are relatable to
things that have really happened to me. For example there
was a moment in the song where I began to speak about how
when I say hello, no one answers; this is to do with a tough
breakup that I went through that I found really hard to deal
with.
That must have been really hard, are you feeling ok to talk
about it ?
Yes, I am totally over it now. Thank you for asking.
Ok, lets move onto another topic. Everyone wants to know
what makes you smile everyday?
Well, some things that I enjoy in my spare time is modelling, I am
very keen on keeping my Instagram up to date by posting every
other week.
I could never of guessed! What are you most proud of, out of
all your success?
Through my success, I am most grateful and proud of my fans as
they are the reason why I have got to where I am today, without
them I am nothing.
Thatā€™s really nice of you to sayā€¦ lets talk about another part
of your crazy journey, what did you spend your first check on
after you had your debut single in the top 10 for several
weeks?
Well there was many spending sprees, but my most memorable
item I bought was a car for my mum and dad, Mercedes G-
wagon. I really do love doing things like this, especially for the
people who I love, it makes me feel like I really have succeeded
when I'm able to give back to the people who have supported me
on my journey.
Wow that is something special. What a great way to end the
interview, with a heartwarming outline of how you made
your parents proud and displayed your respect and success.
Yes, it is really something special. Thank you for having me, its
been great to share my story with you and your fans.
For the double page spread I
decided to do an interview. I
drafted the interview before I
put it on the page.

I have chosen these two graphic layouts because I preferred
them to any of the other designs that I had created. Further
to this, looking at my hand drawn drafts, these two
overruled all of them as well just because of my thought
process really paid off with the end result of these two. One
convention however I am missing on the double page
spread is the pull quote so I will make sure I place this on.

LOCATION RECCE
HAZARDS AT THE WORK PLACE
For MO, it is important that we follow the policies for reliability of maintaining health and
safety in the workplace. If there was a fire in the office, we would use a fire exit that would be
stationed in several areas in the office, this is to make it a lot easier to exit instead of a bunch
of people cramping through a single door to get out of the building. Also, the desks and
chairs that are being used are to not have any faults as this could cause harm to the workers.
Lastly, a way that we will be able to keep up with the ways of going through with a fire alarm
and how to exit the building safely but quickly we will do monthly fire exercises. The reason
for this is because it allows everyone to leave the building safely.
Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974

ETHICAL & LEGAL ISSUES.
The IPSO (independent press standards organization), has set rules known as the
editors code of practice, in which the editor of a magazine, newspaper or any other
form of media, has to follow a particular rule set followed by this organization.
Initially it was the PCC (Press Complaints Commission) that dealt with these rules and
set specific standards that editors would have to follow, and now this has been taken
over by the IPSO.
They focus on a long list of categories such as Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment,
Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide, Children, Children in sex cases,
Hospitals, Reporting of crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual
assault, Discrimination, Financial journalism, Confidential sources, Witness payments
in criminal trials and Payment to criminals. These are all the categories that are
included in the editorā€™s Code of Practice.
https://www.ipso.co.uk
ROLE OF RELEVANT REGULATORY BODIES
About IPSO's complaints process:
This information sets out how your complaint will be dealt with once it is received by IPSO as well as our policies on confidentiality, behaviour and
supporting individuals with disabilities.
Initial assessment:
Once your complaint is received, IPSO staff will assess whether it falls within our remit and if it raises a possible breach of the Editors' Code.
Referral to the publication:
In most circumstances, they will take over the concerns you are holding once the publishers internal complaints procedures has concluded or if the
matter has not been resolved within the 28 days. On the other hand, the publication may request that we begin investigating the complaint
without waiting for the end of the 28 days. On occasion they may begin to investigate the complaint immediately, without a referral period, If they
are to consider if it is essential for us to do.
Investigation:
ā€¢ For this, the IPSO will be provided with a copy of the publicationā€™s response to your complaint and given the opportunity to comment. They will
look to think about a satisfactory outcome to your complaint if appropriate. In some cases this could be faster and provide a wider range of
possible outcomes than the remedial action IPSO can potentially require. Some examples of this are: the publication of a correction, clarification
or apology
ā€¢ the publication of a letter or article by a complainant
ā€¢ a private letter of apology
ā€¢ amendments to an online article or removal of material
ā€¢ assurances about future publication or conduct. https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html
EDITORā€™S CODE OF PRACTICE
Accuracy
Looking at this section, the press are made sure to take care and not to publish
inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not
supported by the text. Also, the press, while free to edit and campaign, they must
distinguish the clear difference between comment, conjecture and the facts.
Privacy
Every person is entitled to respect their privacy and family life etc. further to this, for
people taking pictures, it is not acceptable to take a photograph individuals, without
their consent, this means that when they are in public or in private places their privacy
needs to be respected.
Harassment
Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit. It isnā€™t
allowed for journalists to consistently ask questions, calling, following or photographing
people once asked to stop.
Instruction into grief or shock
In cases involving personal grief or shock, enquiries and approaches must be made with
sympathy and discretion and publication handled sensitively. These provisions should
not restrict the right to report legal proceedings.
Reporting suicide
When reporting on a subject such as suicide, to prevent simulative acts then care and
caution must be taken to avoid excessive detail of the method used, while taking into
account the mediaā€™s right to report legal proceedings.
Children
Everyone should be allowed to complete their time at school with intrusion.
Without school authorities then they are not allowed to photograph or approach the
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/
Children in sex cases
In any kind of press report of a case involving a sexual offence against a minor ā€“
They must not be identified, however the adult is allowed to be identified, a word
such as ā€œincestā€ must not be used where there is a child victim might be identified.
Hospitals
Journalists must identify themselves and obtain permission from a responsible
executive before entering non-public areas of hospitals or similar institutions to
pursue enquiries.
The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about
individuals in hospitals or similar institutions.
Reporting of crime
when reporting a crime, relatives or friends of persons convicted of committing a
crime should not have their identity shared if they do not give consent of such
things, unless they are relevant in context. The reason for this is because if there is a
minor involved in the case who can be a witness or the victim of the said crime, this
must not restrict the right to report legal proceedings.
Clandestine devices and subterfuge
The press must not seek to obtain or publish material acquired by using hidden
cameras or clandestine listening devices; or by intercepting private or mobile
telephone calls, messages or emails; or by the unauthorised removal of documents
or photographs; or by accessing digitally-held information without consent.
Victims of sexual assault
The press must not identify or publish material likely to lead to the identification of a
victim of sexual assault unless there is adequate justification and they are legally free
to do so.
Discrimination
Details of an individual's race, colour, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation,
physical or mental illness or disability must be avoided unless genuinely relevant to
the story.
EDITORS CODE OF PRACTICE CONTINUED
Financial journalism
Even where the law isn't prohibited, journalists must not use for their own profit financial information they receive in
advance of its general publication, or should they pass any kind of information to others that shouldnā€™t have the
information.
Confidential sources
Journalists have a moral obligation to protect confidential sources of information
Witness payments in criminal trials
No payment or offer of payment to a witness ā€“ or any person who may reasonably be expected to be called as a witness
should be made in any case once proceedings are active as defined by the Contempt of Court Act 1981. This prohibition
lasts until the suspect has been freed unconditionally by police without charge or bail or the proceedings are otherwise
discontinued; or has entered a guilty plea to the court; or, in the event of a not guilty plea, the court has announced its
verdict. Any payment or offer of payment made to a person later cited to give evidence in proceedings must be
to the prosecution and defence. The witness must be advised of this requirement.
Payment to criminals
Payment or offers of payment for stories, pictures or information, which seek to exploit a particular crime or to glorify or
glamorise crime in general, must not be made directly or via agents to convicted or confessed criminals or to their
associates. Editors invoking the public interest to justify payment or offers would need to demonstrate that there was
reason to believe the public interest would be served. If, despite payment, no public interest emerged, then the material
should not be published.
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/
EDITORā€™S CODE OF PRACTICE IN
RELATION TO MY MEDIA PRODUCT
Accuracy
I must make sure I do not publish any misleading information on the artists and I
must distinguish the clear difference between comment, conjecture and the facts.
Privacy
I must make sure I ask for consent to take pictures for my
model therefore I will make a consent form and make
sure they sign it.
REGULATORY ISSUES
IP/Watermark
Content that usually has copyright can be referred to as Intellectual Property (IP) and
this is protected by the law. IP can be divided into two categories; Industrial Property
and Copyright. As well as IP on printed work, you can get a digital watermark which
protects any copyrighted content from any magazine online and in any digital
format. It is important to have this because it means people will have to pay you to
use your information/ ideas. The best way to protect your IP is to acquire a patent.
However, this can take several years to get and costs over $7000 in fees.
I will make sure my images are watermarked and are protected by copyright
therefore people will have to pay to use my images.
DATA PROTECTION ACT (1998)
The Date Protection Act 1998 is an act put in place by the untied kingdom parliament, this defines the ways in which information
about living people may be legally used and handled. Its main purpose is to make sure that certain individuals are protected
against misuses or abuse of information about them.
People that use data means that they would have to follow the strict rules that come with it, this is known as ā€˜data protection
principlesā€™. These are the things that they must ensure the information is:
ā€¢ Used fairly and lawfully
ā€¢ Used for limited, specifically stated purposes
ā€¢ Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
ā€¢ Accurate
ā€¢ Kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
ā€¢ Handled according to peopleā€™s data protection rights
ā€¢ Kept safe and secure
ā€¢ Not transferred outside the European Economic Area without
ā€¢ adequate protection
If the information is more sensitive and needs the stricter rules such as:
ā€¢ Ethnic background
ā€¢ Political opinions
ā€¢ Religious beliefs
ā€¢ Health
ā€¢ Sexual health
ā€¢ Criminal records
https://www.gov.uk/data-protection
For my magazine I must make sure I
follow this act so my artists inside
the magazine are protected again
misuses or abuse of information
about them.
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/contents
COPYRIGHT ROYALTIESĀ©
ā€¢ Copyright- is when there is a legal right which lasts for a certain amount of
years so you canā€™t print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or
musical material that already exists.
ā€¢ Within my magazine, I will be making sure that I become a member of the
BBC so that I will never breach any standards and everything I publish will
be protected.
ā€¢ The copyright in a work of authorship immediately becomes the
property of the author who created it at the moment it is put into fixed
form. No one but the author can claim copyright to the work, unless the
author grants rights to others in a written agreement
I do not want others to use my work without permission therefore I must
make sure I gain copyright. I will mark my work with the copyright symbol a
shown above.

  • 2. MAGAZINE MIND MAP Masthead Colour scheme Types of images Frequency Brand identity Target audience MO Magazine Well known celebrities Monochrome + hints of yellow Following the eclectic convention of three primary colours. Yellow connotes: joyful, sunshine and light heartedness The Main image I will be using is a person I know that is a model. Monthly circulation ā€“ this is because not every popular artist is always coming out with new albums. Gives my magazine more time to find out information. Have an easy cover layout for everyone to remember Same colour scheme every new magazine C2 ā€“ E socio economics needs It would appeal to these demographics because of the magazines look and the type of language used and its target audience. MO ā€“ Monthly Ovation As it means Monthly Ovation, because of the knowledge and information that is within the magazine they will be able to give the magazine appreciation and enthusiasm.
  • 3. MAGAZINE MIND MAP Masthead Colour scheme Types of images Frequency Brand identity Target audience Catalyst Magazine Blue and white Well known celebrities that everyone can relate to Promotion of some new products and albums Weekly circulation- this is for the people who are into a lot of music and artists exclusives Makes my magazine look more motivated Make sure I have an easily recognizable front cover so people will see it and instantly know its my magazine Keep the colour scheme simple and constant Looking at the socio- economic needs table I will have my target audience will be from C2 ā€“E in the socio- economic needs. The demographics of this magazine is towards working class and the younger generation (15- 24) because of the language used etc. Catalyst magazine ā€“ this is because it is another word used for motivation which I intend on showing a lot of when making my magazine My magazines of inspiration are mojo and Q because of their vast popularity in music magazines. The music genre is going to be Pop and RnB. Strapline Discover brand new music
  • 4. ROUGH SKETCHES ā€“ FRONT COVER The masthead is also known as the title of the magazine. The masthead here is placed the top left hand corner very much like ā€˜Qā€™ magazine. The masthead should give off a sense of brand identity and should be the same on each magazine that is produced. The strapline is a short, snappy slogan associated to the magazine. This is usually placed near the masthead and I have decided to place it below the masthead. The main image is placed at the center of the magazine and would usually overlap the masthead. This can be any type of technical code, I decided to use the technical code of a medium close up. The barcode would usually contain the price, issue and date of the magazine. This ā€˜informsā€™ (Katz) the user before they decide to buy the magazine. The convention of a puff promotion is placed on the magazine to entice the reader to buy the magazine. This is usually something free, or something the audience can win. Cover lines are usually placed down the left and right hand side of the magazine. These are secondary stories and will tell the reader what will be inside the magazine. You can usually tell the genre of the magazine by reading the cover lines.
  • 5. Rough sketches ā€“ double page spread On a double page spread there will either be a feature article which will look at a topic in depth of an interview. I have decided to use an interview with an artist. The interview will consist of differentiated questions and answers. A common convention on a double page spread is a headline. This is usually at the top of the page and will be bold to stand out to the audience. Another common convention is a stand first. The is a short introduction to the feature article or the interview. On a double page spread there can be one main image or an array of images. I have chosen to do my double page spread on the artist on the front cover. Another common convention is a drop capital. A drop capital is the first letter of a sentence made bigger. This will highlight to the reader where to start reading. Another common convention is a pull quote. This is a piece of writing pulled from the interview or feature article to grab the reader attention. This usually would be something controversial or interesting.

The reason why I have done this is so people know what they are working for and just to make it fair for everyone who will be working for the magazine. For the total cost of this was roughly Ā£730,097 in the staff and their costs.

  • 10. PROFIT AND LOSS BREAKDOWN For the first year of my magazine being released, the loss to profit ratio will be far outbalanced as the loss will be much bigger in comparison of the profits that the magazine will bring to the business for the first section of the magazines release. For the first year it will be a lot harder to sell etc. due to the magazine being new and no one will know of it meaning that they will not know how good it is, this will mean that the magazine will not be selling nearly as much that it will in the future. For the first issue of the magazine the profits will be a lot smaller as there will be less adverts that will want to promote in the magazine, this will mean that to get more money from the magazine it will take time as the bigger companies wont want to have adverts in a new magazine that doesn'tā€™t sell a lot. After the first year of selling the magazine, I will have all of the costs put together. For example, there will be a total cost of Ā£361,656 as this is to spend on the equipment and making sure that all the staff have the correct equipment to go through everyday and compete their work. To make this all happen I will be working in an office, this will cost Ā£220 per month, this price comes with every including the desks and other extras that are required in an office. After everything is all set up we would then need to review the pricing of the staff as a whole, looking at how much it is going to cost each month. The total cost every year for the total amount of money that will go into paying the salaries of the employees will come to, Ā£737,097.
  • 11. PRINTING QUOTES AND COST For creating my magazine I have chosen to make it with 15,000 copies allowing me to spend as little as possible but still giving out enough magazines that will be able to reach a reasonable audience. Making a bundle of one magazine is a lot cheaper in comparison to printing a single magazine multiple times. To print one magazine it came to Ā£20.35 whereas if I was to print 15,000 magazines it would come to Ā£5,239. https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
  • 12. HAND DRAWN DRAFTS CONCLUSION MO Front cover Out of the two designs I came up with, I prefer the one on the right because with the way they are laid out they nearly replicated my competitorsā€™ magazines, but with my magazine I will make sure that my content a lot better than ā€˜Billboardā€™. Double page Looking at my double page designs, I think that the top one is better. This is because its layout is much neater and I think that I will be able to produce a magazine with that specific layout much easier than the bottom design. Catalyst Front cover As for these designs, I prefer the design on the right because is more unique when its compared to other competitors magazines. Double page For this, I will be using the design on the top because, I prefer it a lot more in comparison to the other design and I think with having more space for images it then makes it look more interesting to the audience
  • 13. HOUSE STYLE - MO Colour scheme For MO magazine I will be using monochrome with hints of yellow. This is because using black and white will show the contrast of my magazine and how my magazine can bring sunlight to the darkness using the hints of yellow. I have decided to using yellow because I connotes sunlight and joyfulness. Font style For MO magazine I will be using the font style is known as ā€˜Arial rounded MT boldā€™. The reason for this is, I think that is a great font to go with my masthead, also because of my younger targeted audience as the font is rounded and bold it shows the informal side to my magazine, as I donā€™t intend on targeting anyone over the age of 25 and that aren't in the socio-economic needs sector that I have chosen. Social media MO magazine will be a synergy with all social medias. This is because I will then be able to reach out to a lot more people and possibly on a global scale eventually. Using the most popular social medias such as Instagram, Snapchat and twitter to promote and give my audience updates and possible exclusives.
  • 14. FONT STYLES For MO magazine I have chosen these fonts because they reflect my intentions with this magazine, as you can see with some of my chosen fonts are more suited to my audience. Looking at font number three, it definitely target my audience of the socio-economic needs table which was from C2- E, this has an age range of about 15-25 meaning that I will need to make sure that my fonts are more informal as it will attract the targeted audience.
  • 15. MASTHEAD IDEAS Looking at the mind map on the side you can see that I had several other ideas of what I wanted to call my magazine. From inspirations such as NME, Q and Billboard, I have used their magazines as inspiration into making my magazines. I have chosen MO because it denotes ā€˜Monthly Ovationā€™ which connotes the magazine will be produced monthly to ā€˜entertainā€™ (Katz) the audience and using the word ā€˜ovationā€™ connotes the magazine will be professional and the audience will applaud the magazine for being a brand new and good. Masthead KiNGS GRiME MADDDD RAD COOL MAGIC QuE MO
  • 17. IMAGES OF INFLUENCE The magazine above are some of the magazines that I will be trying to replicate it in my own way on my front covers. The positioning of the masthead and model are the few things that I will be trying to repeat. For my MO magazine, I will be repeating the positioning and size of the model image and positioning of the magazine logo. Further to this, looking at the front cover of NME I will be using their similar colour scheme making it plain and simple for everyone.
  • 18. DRAFT INTERVIEW Hi Frankie, how are you doing? Hello, I'm doing great thanks, how have you been keeping mate? I've been amazing, thank you for asking! Lets get into this interview then shall we? Go on Iā€™m more than ready. For many weeks now, there has been a rumour going around about a collaboration with someone big, is that true? Yes this is true, however I am most definitely not prepared to release this to anyone until I am ready to get to work with this artist, sorry for the disappointment. That's ok, I totally understand that you want to keep it as a surprise. I am very proud of this new project, I feel that it could be one of my biggest pieces of work that I have ever done; its going to something else! Well something else that people want to know is that in some of your most recent singles, there have been some suspicious remarks to really specific things, are they relating to something that has actually happened to you? Wow. You really have looked into my work with great detail haven't you. With some of my remarks, they are relatable to things that have really happened to me. For example there was a moment in the song where I began to speak about how when I say hello, no one answers; this is to do with a tough breakup that I went through that I found really hard to deal with. That must have been really hard, are you feeling ok to talk about it ? Yes, I am totally over it now. Thank you for asking. Ok, lets move onto another topic. Everyone wants to know what makes you smile everyday? Well, some things that I enjoy in my spare time is modelling, I am very keen on keeping my Instagram up to date by posting every other week. I could never of guessed! What are you most proud of, out of all your success? Through my success, I am most grateful and proud of my fans as they are the reason why I have got to where I am today, without them I am nothing. Thatā€™s really nice of you to sayā€¦ lets talk about another part of your crazy journey, what did you spend your first check on after you had your debut single in the top 10 for several weeks? Well there was many spending sprees, but my most memorable item I bought was a car for my mum and dad, Mercedes G- wagon. I really do love doing things like this, especially for the people who I love, it makes me feel like I really have succeeded when I'm able to give back to the people who have supported me on my journey. Wow that is something special. What a great way to end the interview, with a heartwarming outline of how you made your parents proud and displayed your respect and success. Yes, it is really something special. Thank you for having me, its been great to share my story with you and your fans. For the double page spread I decided to do an interview. I drafted the interview before I put it on the page.
  • 19. GRAPHIC LAYOUTS caption Quote Text Text Photos Headline / stand verse Drop capital Text Masthead Headline or Anchorage text. Photo of artist barcode Puff promotion strapline Cover stories I have chosen these two graphic layouts because I preferred them to any of the other designs that I had created. Further to this, looking at my hand drawn drafts, these two overruled all of them as well just because of my thought process really paid off with the end result of these two. One convention however I am missing on the double page spread is the pull quote so I will make sure I place this on.

  • 24. HAZARDS AT THE WORK PLACE For MO, it is important that we follow the policies for reliability of maintaining health and safety in the workplace. If there was a fire in the office, we would use a fire exit that would be stationed in several areas in the office, this is to make it a lot easier to exit instead of a bunch of people cramping through a single door to get out of the building. Also, the desks and chairs that are being used are to not have any faults as this could cause harm to the workers. Lastly, a way that we will be able to keep up with the ways of going through with a fire alarm and how to exit the building safely but quickly we will do monthly fire exercises. The reason for this is because it allows everyone to leave the building safely. Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 This is also referred to as HSWA. This is a piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in the work place in Britain. http://www.hse.gov.uk/legislation/hswa.htm
  • 25. ETHICAL & LEGAL ISSUES. The IPSO (independent press standards organization), has set rules known as the editors code of practice, in which the editor of a magazine, newspaper or any other form of media, has to follow a particular rule set followed by this organization. Initially it was the PCC (Press Complaints Commission) that dealt with these rules and set specific standards that editors would have to follow, and now this has been taken over by the IPSO. They focus on a long list of categories such as Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide, Children, Children in sex cases, Hospitals, Reporting of crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual assault, Discrimination, Financial journalism, Confidential sources, Witness payments in criminal trials and Payment to criminals. These are all the categories that are included in the editorā€™s Code of Practice. https://www.ipso.co.uk
  • 26. ROLE OF RELEVANT REGULATORY BODIES About IPSO's complaints process: This information sets out how your complaint will be dealt with once it is received by IPSO as well as our policies on confidentiality, behaviour and supporting individuals with disabilities. Initial assessment: Once your complaint is received, IPSO staff will assess whether it falls within our remit and if it raises a possible breach of the Editors' Code. Referral to the publication: In most circumstances, they will take over the concerns you are holding once the publishers internal complaints procedures has concluded or if the matter has not been resolved within the 28 days. On the other hand, the publication may request that we begin investigating the complaint without waiting for the end of the 28 days. On occasion they may begin to investigate the complaint immediately, without a referral period, If they are to consider if it is essential for us to do. Investigation: ā€¢ For this, the IPSO will be provided with a copy of the publicationā€™s response to your complaint and given the opportunity to comment. They will look to think about a satisfactory outcome to your complaint if appropriate. In some cases this could be faster and provide a wider range of possible outcomes than the remedial action IPSO can potentially require. Some examples of this are: the publication of a correction, clarification or apology ā€¢ the publication of a letter or article by a complainant ā€¢ a private letter of apology ā€¢ amendments to an online article or removal of material ā€¢ assurances about future publication or conduct. https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html
  • 27. EDITORā€™S CODE OF PRACTICE Accuracy Looking at this section, the press are made sure to take care and not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported by the text. Also, the press, while free to edit and campaign, they must distinguish the clear difference between comment, conjecture and the facts. Privacy Every person is entitled to respect their privacy and family life etc. further to this, for people taking pictures, it is not acceptable to take a photograph individuals, without their consent, this means that when they are in public or in private places their privacy needs to be respected. Harassment Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit. It isnā€™t allowed for journalists to consistently ask questions, calling, following or photographing people once asked to stop. Instruction into grief or shock In cases involving personal grief or shock, enquiries and approaches must be made with sympathy and discretion and publication handled sensitively. These provisions should not restrict the right to report legal proceedings. Reporting suicide When reporting on a subject such as suicide, to prevent simulative acts then care and caution must be taken to avoid excessive detail of the method used, while taking into account the mediaā€™s right to report legal proceedings. Children Everyone should be allowed to complete their time at school with intrusion. Without school authorities then they are not allowed to photograph or approach the https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/ Children in sex cases In any kind of press report of a case involving a sexual offence against a minor ā€“ They must not be identified, however the adult is allowed to be identified, a word such as ā€œincestā€ must not be used where there is a child victim might be identified. Hospitals Journalists must identify themselves and obtain permission from a responsible executive before entering non-public areas of hospitals or similar institutions to pursue enquiries. The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about individuals in hospitals or similar institutions. Reporting of crime when reporting a crime, relatives or friends of persons convicted of committing a crime should not have their identity shared if they do not give consent of such things, unless they are relevant in context. The reason for this is because if there is a minor involved in the case who can be a witness or the victim of the said crime, this must not restrict the right to report legal proceedings. Clandestine devices and subterfuge The press must not seek to obtain or publish material acquired by using hidden cameras or clandestine listening devices; or by intercepting private or mobile telephone calls, messages or emails; or by the unauthorised removal of documents or photographs; or by accessing digitally-held information without consent. Victims of sexual assault The press must not identify or publish material likely to lead to the identification of a victim of sexual assault unless there is adequate justification and they are legally free to do so. Discrimination Details of an individual's race, colour, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental illness or disability must be avoided unless genuinely relevant to the story.
  • 28. EDITORS CODE OF PRACTICE CONTINUED Financial journalism Even where the law isn't prohibited, journalists must not use for their own profit financial information they receive in advance of its general publication, or should they pass any kind of information to others that shouldnā€™t have the information. Confidential sources Journalists have a moral obligation to protect confidential sources of information Witness payments in criminal trials No payment or offer of payment to a witness ā€“ or any person who may reasonably be expected to be called as a witness should be made in any case once proceedings are active as defined by the Contempt of Court Act 1981. This prohibition lasts until the suspect has been freed unconditionally by police without charge or bail or the proceedings are otherwise discontinued; or has entered a guilty plea to the court; or, in the event of a not guilty plea, the court has announced its verdict. Any payment or offer of payment made to a person later cited to give evidence in proceedings must be to the prosecution and defence. The witness must be advised of this requirement. Payment to criminals Payment or offers of payment for stories, pictures or information, which seek to exploit a particular crime or to glorify or glamorise crime in general, must not be made directly or via agents to convicted or confessed criminals or to their associates. Editors invoking the public interest to justify payment or offers would need to demonstrate that there was reason to believe the public interest would be served. If, despite payment, no public interest emerged, then the material should not be published. https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/

  • 30. REGULATORY ISSUES IP/Watermark Content that usually has copyright can be referred to as Intellectual Property (IP) and this is protected by the law. IP can be divided into two categories; Industrial Property and Copyright. As well as IP on printed work, you can get a digital watermark which protects any copyrighted content from any magazine online and in any digital format. It is important to have this because it means people will have to pay you to use your information/ ideas. The best way to protect your IP is to acquire a patent. However, this can take several years to get and costs over $7000 in fees. I will make sure my images are watermarked and are protected by copyright therefore people will have to pay to use my images.
