Mast Head Bold and clear font. Set in black in order to contrast effectively with the
white background. Allows it to stand out and draws attention of reader.
Positioned above artists head in order to establish it as the brand as it is
also the largest text that is presented on the page which helps to show it
is as the brand. Broadway font is used which allows the music genre of my
magazine to be demonstrated and connected with the brand itself and
therefore can illustrate to readers along with the name what type of music
magazine this is. A drop shadow effect has also been used on it which
allows it to stand out further and create a 3D effect to some extent to
make it eye catching to the audience. The use of the dots between the
letters also allow it to be seen as a unique brand and means it is able to
stand out from the magazines.
Similar mastheads
Main Image Mid shot is used , creates a personal connection with the reader direct mode
of address is used due to the fact the artist I looking directly at the audience ,
this also helps create the personal connection to the reader. Full face lighting
follows usual conventions and allows the theme and mood of the magazine to
be created. Model is a similar age to my target audience demographic , this
also helps to emphasise to the reader what type of magazine this is and who it
would appeal to. The use of the record covering up half her face so only her
eyes can be seen intrigues the reader as it creates an idea of mystery this
aspect does not follow usual conventions and instead challenges them as
normally the models full face is shown on front covers. The vinyl record also
helps to display and create the theme of the magazine to help establish the
music genre .
Examples of the
usual conventions

I have challenged
with my own
Anchor Text Anchor text is bold and eye-catching
font, sets a colour them to create a
house style to be continued throughout
the magazine (integrative uses and
grats). Overlaps the image bringing it to
the forefront and standing out to the
reader and stimulating their interest.
Also contrasts to the background.
Similar anchor
texts
Sell Lines The use of these sell lines follows usual conventions as they are displayed around the
main image in order to frame it. Different styles of font follows usual conventions , I
chose to use the same font for most of the sell lines, ‘TW Condensed Arial’ however in
each of the sell lines I have added on effect such as drop shadows and inner glows in
order to distinguish them separately form each other. On some areas of the text I have
also used a black box around the text in order to allow them to stand out more due to
the contrasting colours.
The use of the rhetorical question at the bottom of the page below the anchor text
creates and stimulates interest to the reader making them want to know the answer
therefore encouraging them to read further. Follows the idea of Barthes Hermenutic
code in that the answer may not be releveled till later on and therefore creates mystery
and interest form the reader.

lines
House style
Use of bright vibrant colour immediately attracts attention ,
follows conventions in this way , however usually black and red are
used so they challenge this aspect of usual conventions. It may
reflect a specific gender, female, however originally I choose my
target audience demographic to be aimed at both genders so this
may not suit the demographics I originally chose but this could
just be for this particular edition due to the featured artist being
female and her style is reflected in the house style.

Mast head
Bold and contrasts well with the black box positioned
behind it , the font style ‘Broadway’ connects the house
style as it links in directly with the same style of the mast
head on the front cover. Positioned at top of the page
follows conventions.

Page Numbers & Text
Page Numbers are conventionally bigger than the text that displays
the title of the page with the description. It follows the house style as
it is presented in the colour and ‘Broadway’ font.
The titles of the page numbers are in a larger font and also follow the
house style to some extent as they are written in same font as the
sell lines and the description below these page titles are written in
the same style however in a smaller size to distinguish them from the
title. Layout also follows conventions as it is clear and allows reader
to easily navigate magazine.

Main Image A long shot is used in order to create a better visual illustration
to the reader on the artist, this contrasts particularly with the
front cover image as the same model is used but in a close up
hot with only half her face revealed. Facial expression attracts
reader an allows personal connection and sets a mood for the
theme of the page. The use of the vinyl records also connects
this page to the front cover as it was also used in it. It develops
some conventions as usually a mid close up or close up shot is
used of the featured artist instead of the long shot that I have
used in order to create my desired effect.
Example of image

conventions
An example
of an image
similar to my
own by using
a long shot
Brand Name Following usual conventions I have put the name of
the magazine at the top of the page. Developed
these conventions by adding a fade effect so that
this does not take way from the main mast head
which is the ‘ Contents’. It is positioned behind the
models head to allow the image to stand out more
and create a layered appearance giving it a 3D effect.
Similar brand names on contents
pages, the one on the right
however is more faded out in the
same way I have chosen to do
mine whereas the Mojo magazine
follows more common conventions
by the way they have displayed
their brand name on the contents
page.
Quote
A quote of the featured artist has been used in order
to give a personal approach to the audience , it also
helps to establish the artist herself and follows
conventions as usually featured artist are positioned
with a quote by them. The italic font also helps to
show how it is dialogue , and the colour follows the
house style.

Mast Head ( anchor text)
‘Broadway’ font issued to cary on the house
style theme. The box its positioned in is also
presented in house style colour. This follows
conventions as it carries house style though
the magazine to establish the brand further.
Artist name is the title of the age to directly
address to the reader what the page is about
instantly.

Pull Quotes Larger and bold font used allows it to
stand out and drawing reader in.
Intrigues them ass it makes reader ask
question and therefore encourage
them to read more. It also helps o sum
up and inform reader on article (uses
and grats) . They sit within the columns
which follows conventions and also
helps to break up the text.

Main & Thumbnail Image
Main image I used follows conventions as it
covers only one half of the double age spread.
Image is edited purposefully in high contrast and
brightness in order to set a tone for the page and
stand out to the reader. A long shot Is used in
order to give a visual identity of the artist and
show that she is the same model as the one
featured on the contents page as this particular
edition is focused on her. The white background
also allows her to stand out further drawing in
readers attention.
Similar
images used
I have used a thumb nail picture
here in order to show that artists
new album cover. It is small so
does not distract away form main
contents but it helps to break up
the text.
Layout Layout Is conventional in order to suit the
traditional and clear identity and theme of
the magazine , the use of the text in vertical
columns conforms to conventions. The
image covering the whole of half a page also
conform to conventions , the simple layout
is clear but effective in fulfilling its purpose
to inform and intrigue readers.

  • 1. Evaluation Question 1 IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR PRODUCTION CHALLENGE , DEVELOP OR CONFORM TO CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
  • 3. Mast Head Bold and clear font. Set in black in order to contrast effectively with the white background. Allows it to stand out and draws attention of reader. Positioned above artists head in order to establish it as the brand as it is also the largest text that is presented on the page which helps to show it is as the brand. Broadway font is used which allows the music genre of my magazine to be demonstrated and connected with the brand itself and therefore can illustrate to readers along with the name what type of music magazine this is. A drop shadow effect has also been used on it which allows it to stand out further and create a 3D effect to some extent to make it eye catching to the audience. The use of the dots between the letters also allow it to be seen as a unique brand and means it is able to stand out from the magazines. Similar mastheads
  • 4. Main Image Mid shot is used , creates a personal connection with the reader direct mode of address is used due to the fact the artist I looking directly at the audience , this also helps create the personal connection to the reader. Full face lighting follows usual conventions and allows the theme and mood of the magazine to be created. Model is a similar age to my target audience demographic , this also helps to emphasise to the reader what type of magazine this is and who it would appeal to. The use of the record covering up half her face so only her eyes can be seen intrigues the reader as it creates an idea of mystery this aspect does not follow usual conventions and instead challenges them as normally the models full face is shown on front covers. The vinyl record also helps to display and create the theme of the magazine to help establish the music genre . Examples of the usual conventions of main images that I have challenged with my own
  • 5. Anchor Text Anchor text is bold and eye-catching font, sets a colour them to create a house style to be continued throughout the magazine (integrative uses and grats). Overlaps the image bringing it to the forefront and standing out to the reader and stimulating their interest. Also contrasts to the background. Similar anchor texts
  • 6. Sell Lines The use of these sell lines follows usual conventions as they are displayed around the main image in order to frame it. Different styles of font follows usual conventions , I chose to use the same font for most of the sell lines, ‘TW Condensed Arial’ however in each of the sell lines I have added on effect such as drop shadows and inner glows in order to distinguish them separately form each other. On some areas of the text I have also used a black box around the text in order to allow them to stand out more due to the contrasting colours. The use of the rhetorical question at the bottom of the page below the anchor text creates and stimulates interest to the reader making them want to know the answer therefore encouraging them to read further. Follows the idea of Barthes Hermenutic code in that the answer may not be releveled till later on and therefore creates mystery and interest form the reader. Similar sell lines
  • 7. House style Use of bright vibrant colour immediately attracts attention , follows conventions in this way , however usually black and red are used so they challenge this aspect of usual conventions. It may reflect a specific gender, female, however originally I choose my target audience demographic to be aimed at both genders so this may not suit the demographics I originally chose but this could just be for this particular edition due to the featured artist being female and her style is reflected in the house style. Examples of existing media house styles
  • 8. Contents page… Mast head Main Image Page numbers and text Social media link Brand name Quote from featured artist
  • 9. Mast head Bold and contrasts well with the black box positioned behind it , the font style ‘Broadway’ connects the house style as it links in directly with the same style of the mast head on the front cover. Positioned at top of the page follows conventions. Example of similar masthead Example of mast head that challenges conventions
  • 10. Page Numbers & Text Page Numbers are conventionally bigger than the text that displays the title of the page with the description. It follows the house style as it is presented in the colour and ‘Broadway’ font. The titles of the page numbers are in a larger font and also follow the house style to some extent as they are written in same font as the sell lines and the description below these page titles are written in the same style however in a smaller size to distinguish them from the title. Layout also follows conventions as it is clear and allows reader to easily navigate magazine. Similar page Numbers and text
  • 11. Main Image A long shot is used in order to create a better visual illustration to the reader on the artist, this contrasts particularly with the front cover image as the same model is used but in a close up hot with only half her face revealed. Facial expression attracts reader an allows personal connection and sets a mood for the theme of the page. The use of the vinyl records also connects this page to the front cover as it was also used in it. It develops some conventions as usually a mid close up or close up shot is used of the featured artist instead of the long shot that I have used in order to create my desired effect. Example of image following conventions An example of an image similar to my own by using a long shot
  • 12. Brand Name Following usual conventions I have put the name of the magazine at the top of the page. Developed these conventions by adding a fade effect so that this does not take way from the main mast head which is the ‘ Contents’. It is positioned behind the models head to allow the image to stand out more and create a layered appearance giving it a 3D effect. Similar brand names on contents pages, the one on the right however is more faded out in the same way I have chosen to do mine whereas the Mojo magazine follows more common conventions by the way they have displayed their brand name on the contents page.
  • 13. Quote A quote of the featured artist has been used in order to give a personal approach to the audience , it also helps to establish the artist herself and follows conventions as usually featured artist are positioned with a quote by them. The italic font also helps to show how it is dialogue , and the colour follows the house style. Similar quote used

  • 16. Pull Quotes Larger and bold font used allows it to stand out and drawing reader in. Intrigues them ass it makes reader ask question and therefore encourage them to read more. It also helps o sum up and inform reader on article (uses and grats) . They sit within the columns which follows conventions and also helps to break up the text. Similar pull quote used
  • 17. Main & Thumbnail Image Main image I used follows conventions as it covers only one half of the double age spread. Image is edited purposefully in high contrast and brightness in order to set a tone for the page and stand out to the reader. A long shot Is used in order to give a visual identity of the artist and show that she is the same model as the one featured on the contents page as this particular edition is focused on her. The white background also allows her to stand out further drawing in readers attention. Similar images used I have used a thumb nail picture here in order to show that artists new album cover. It is small so does not distract away form main contents but it helps to break up the text.
  • 18. Layout Layout Is conventional in order to suit the traditional and clear identity and theme of the magazine , the use of the text in vertical columns conforms to conventions.
