Light Plot and Photometrics
6. Light Plot
To Create a light plot you need the following:
A ground plan of scenic design
A sectional of the scenic design
A ground plan of the stage and auditorium
A sectional of the stage and auditorium
The layout of the lighting system
Fly rails, Grids, Electric Positions.
Theater’s lighting equipment inventory
More Vocabulary
Working Sectional: a drawing showing the sectional angle for a
lighting instrument that you will use to calculate the throw
distance, hanging position, and beam angle
Throw Distance – How far light from an instrument travels from
its hanging position to the center of its focus area
Hanging Position – Where the lighting instrument is hung
Beam Angle – Determines the lighting instrument needed to
illuminate the actor/object.

“Stage lighting design can be defined as the creative use of
illumination to enhance the spectator’s understanding and
appreciation of the production by visually supporting the
production concept.”
J. Michael Gillette – Designing With Light

What is light doing?
Visiblity/Selective Focus
Modeling
Time/Location
29. Mood/Atmosphere
2
Light is telling us what to look at, where and when we are, and
how we should feel.

7
Distribution
The direction of the light (important for modeling)
The shape and size of area being lit (selective focus)
The Quality and character of the light
8
Distribution:
Quality of Light
It’s Cohesivness: clarity or diffusion
9
Distribution:
Character of Light
Its Texture: Smooth, uneven, patterned, hard or soft focused
31. 10
softness of light is the measure of how abruptly the transition is
from highlight to shadow on a subject.
10
Intensity
The actual amount or level of brightness of the light
11
Movement
Time duration of a light cue
Movement of Light on stage
Movement of light off stage
12
Color
Meaning of Color
Additive Color Mixing
Cyan, Magenta, Amber = White Light
Subtractive Color Mixing
Colored Filters aka Gel
