Heart Condition
Hearts are complicated. Whether they are physical or
spiritual, thereâs always more going on in oneâs heart
than what mere observation can reveal. In Scripture, we
find that spiritual hearts are often described as the center
of peopleâs desires (Ps. 37:4). Although people reveal to
us much about their hearts through their words and
actions (Lk. 6:45), only God fully knows the hearts of
all people (1 Kings 8:39). Every day we interact with
people who possess all different types of hearts: Some
soft, some hard, some cautious, some unguarded, some
dismissive, some receptive, and list the goes on. No
matter what we can perceive about a person, we can
never fully know what kind of heart we are dealing
with.
In the Parable of the Sower (Lk. 8:4-15), Jesus explains
that the condition of each personâs heart is different and
responds differently when exposed to the Word of God.
In the parable, the seed represents the Word of God (Lk.
8:11) and the different soils represent the different kinds
of hearts in people (Lk. 8:15). Jesus explained that some
people have hearts that are hard and dismissive (Lk.
8:12). Some are soft on the outside, but shallow and
hard on the inside (Lk. 8:13). Some are soft and
receptive, and yet are cluttered with other things and
canât offer up much space (Lk. 8:14). And last, some are
soft, deep, open, and unoccupied â ready to receive the
Word (Lk. 8:15). While God knows instantly the
condition of any personâs heart at any given moment,
we simply do not. It truly becomes evident to us what
kind of heart we are dealing with when we observe their
response to the Word. The Word of God reveals the
hearts of people (Heb. 4:12), not our observations or
preconceived notions.
As Christians, it is not our job to completely know the
condition of peopleâs hearts, but it is our job to sow the
Word of God. What happens from there is primarily
between Godâs Word and the personâs heart. As we
reach out to others, extending invitations to church,
sending cards, inviting to events, and offering Bible
studies, let us remember that we never know what kind
heart we are dealing with. Itâs sometimes disappointing
when a personâs heart is closed off to Godâs Word, but
we must remember, that according to Jesus there are
always good and honest hearts out there ready to receive
the word (Lk. 8:15). It is our job to reach them with
Godâs Word. And remember, God Himself is not purely
passive with peopleâs hearts. He has opened peopleâs
hearts to receive and to respond to the word (Acts
16:14-15). So let us pray for God to send us people with
good and honest hearts and let us pray that God will
open up peopleâs hearts to respond to His Word.
