All It Takes
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
Matthew 14:16
A child’s lunch.
That’s all it took for a revolutionary miracle to occur.
Of course, this story is one repeated in church settings again and again. The danger of
hearing a story repeated often enough is that it can potentially lose some of its potency, such
as the staggering implication of that command from Jesus.
This event is one of the few reported in some way by each gospel. It is John’s account that
shares where the bread and fish came from, a boy in the crowd. In a recent Wednesday night
Bible study, we discussed exactly these points, of how we can lose that sense of astonishment
with a story the more we hear it. We think we’ve heard all it has to say, learned our lessons.
The beauty of scripture is its ability to captivate and amaze, even when we think we’ve heard
it all before. God still uses those events to remind us of His work here in the present.
The start of a church year presents us with a wealth of opportunities and new experiences.
As we move forward, there might be a lingering question of “what do I have to offer.”
Perhaps, at some point, you’ve said to yourself, “I’m not qualified.” “I’m not prepared.”
And, you know what? You might be right. I’d wager those disciples felt under qualified and
unprepared to feed thousands of people that day, too.
That is where the wonder of Jesus’ simple command comes into focus. “You give them
something to eat.” Jesus didn’t instruct the disciples to just bring the people together so Jesus
could feed them. Jesus gave them a responsibility, a part to play in the matter. Jesus told
them to figure out a way to feed those people. What they came up with were five loaves of
bread and two fish. Certainly, this would not be nearly enough, and we’re still under qualified
and unprepared. This is the setting for a miracle to occur, because Jesus took what the
disciples had collected and not only fed the multitude, but had leftovers.
Despite what any of us might think when we survey our resources, Jesus can use our loaves
and fish. We might look to ourselves, our time, our finances, our energy, and continually say
“I don’t have enough.” “I don’t have what it takes.” All the while, Jesus might be instructing
us, “You give them something to eat.” Because it doesn’t matter what we think we can do
with those resources. It’s what God can do with them. God can take what we think might be
a paltry offering, certainly lacking in the task before us, and make it something miraculous.
In this new church year, as you survey your own
resources, as we take inventory of our resources as a
church family, the lingering question becomes will we
offer our bread and fish? Will we allow God the
opportunity to show us just how far those limited
resources might stretch? Or, will we simply mire
ourselves in the mentality of it’s just not enough.
A child’s lunch. That’s all it took for a miracle to
occur.
What will you do with your bread and fish?

We appreciate all the things that John Bruce, Bobby, Nelson, Sam and Jerry have

take over. They don’t need to climb ladders to replace lights, filters, etc. If you are
willing to help please let them know.
