Looking the Right Way
By: Tim Shoemaker
A gentleman was speaking of the dangers
that are faced by Americans when they are visiting in his
native Australia. He noted that, “Australia is not always a
friendly place for tourists. We have Great White Sharks
hovering off our beaches, man-eating crocodiles in our
Northern regions, deadly box jellyfish with stingers ex-
tending meters and meters, the deadliest spider in the
world, and 13 of the world’s 20 deadliest snakes! But of
all the dangers presented to American tourists a little re-
membered one is attempts by them to cross our roads.
No, this is not because Aussies have a passionate hatred
towards all things American that makes them targets for
Aussie drivers. It’s simply because the two countries
drive on opposite sides of the road. This means that
American tourists have to remember to look in the oppo-
site direction to that which they would normally look. A
lifetime habit is hard to kick, with the result that Ameri-
can tourists in Australia easily find themselves looking in
the wrong direction, then stepping out into oncoming
traffic. The same thing applies to Australians in the US.”
Looking the right way is of even greater importance in
regard to spiritual matters. Looking the wrong way can
be extremely dangerous to our soul’s well being. It was
when Eve “saw that the tree was good for food” (Gen.
3:6) that she was tempted to sin. It was when Lot “lifted
up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it
was well watered everywhere” (Gen. 13:10) that he
chose to pitch his tents toward Sodom and Gomorrah.
And it was when Peter looked at the “boisterous
wind” (Matt. 14:30) that he began to sink. When Pilate
brought Jesus out to the crowd that was calling for His
death, he said to them, “Behold the man.” Jesus is the
One to whom we all need to look. The writer of Hebrews
instructed his readers to do this very thing telling them,
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;
who for the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right
hand of the throne of God” (Heb. 12:2). We need to be
looking to Jesus because He and He alone is the “pioneer
and perfecter of our faith.” The word “look” is from the
Greek word aphorao which means “to look away from all
other things to look at one.” Jesus is the One who has
taken the lead and sets the example for us to follow. It is
in Christ that faith has had its full expression and has
attained perfection. It is by Christ that our faith is per-
fected. Let us always be looking to Jesus as our example
and be sure that we are following in His steps.
