1. Taft Hartley Act And The Civil War
Taft–Hartley Act The Taft–Hartley Act (also known more properly as the Labor Management
Relations Act of 1947) as issued to amend the Wagner Act of 1935 and discontinued parts of the
Federal Anti–Injunction Act of 1932. This law helped to reinforce flaws that were in the Wagner
Act. Where the Wagner Act had only spoken of the right to participate in union activities, the Taft–
Hartley Act helped to fill in the gaps by allowing for the right to refrain from union activities. The
Taft–Hartley Act was created to level the field that formerly tilted in favor of labor unions. After
great numbers of large–scale strikes had nearly disabled the automobile, steel, and packing
industries, the government needed to amend the gaps left by the Wagner act and by the National
Labor Relations Act of 1953. Sponsored by Senator Robert A. Taft, and Representative Fred A.
Hartley, Jr. (New Jersey), it helped to "patch" issues that were left in The Wagner Act of 1935. The
Act was vetoed by President Harry Truman, but was superseded by congress. Another opponent of
the act was John L. Lewis. A powerful labor leader who helped to raise living standards for millions
of workers and families in the 1930s, he was regarded as a hero by the mining union, and many
workers. Lewis hated the Act, calling it "the first ugly savage thrust of Fascism in America" As the
Taft–Hartley Act was essentially designed to limit the power of unions greatly, it was a major
obstacle for him. The Taft–Hartley Act did six

Georgia O'Keefe
Georgia O'Keeffe is an American artist, who lived during American Modernism ("Georgia
O'Keeffe"). She inspired many artists throughout her time and even after. She liked to use
landscapes and architecture as subject matter ("Georgia O;Keeffe"). The historical context is
significant during the time. Her style and type of artwork are very specific to who she was as an
artist and a person because she loved the outdoors and beautiful landscapes. I fell in love with her
art while in the library finding an artist to write about.

Alfred Stieglitz, her husband at one time had influenced and inspired a large part of her career, he
even helped her become a known artist (Curiger, 10). She used lots of medium such as charcoal,
paint, watercolor, clay, and sometimes even pencil as a finished drawing, not just preliminary work
("Georgia O'Keeffe"). Her style was edgy and new at the time of its creation. The art that I was
intrigued by was Looking Toward a Bedroom at Abiquiu Towards Espanola, which is a landscape of
a large beautiful greyish Blue Mountain and a road with lots of leafy green trees surrounding the
road ("Georgia O'Keefe's Enduring Legacy"). I enjoyed it because I love nature and the outdoors, so
it was already an interest for me. I also liked Cup of Silver Ginger, which is an enlarged white
flower with blue and yellow accents all over it, sort of like splatter paint ("Georgia O'Keefe's
Enduring Legacy"). I love flowers and this particular piece was very beautiful and life like. The last
one I noticed was Drawing IV, which is a tree with odd shaped branches, but the beauty of it was so
real and life like ("Georgia O'Keefe's Enduring Legacy"). For me as a viewer it feels dark,
mysterious, and a little creepy, but I think she was trying to grab attention and instead of thinking it's
just any old tree, she made it her own and in different people it can provoke a different idea or

5. Corporate Level Of The Mcdonalds
There are few business firms anywhere in the world that have been able to sustain the level of
growth of McDonalds. McDonalds began by selling only hamburgers and has expanded its menu as
well as its franchises on a global platform. According to Robert Hartley, McDonalds Corporation
faced a decline. McDonalds Struggled to grow as a result of constantly opening new stores, the
acquisition of other fast–food franchises and a few discrepancies in the McDonalds menu. (Hartley,
2014, p.75). But as I conducted further research, I have come to the understanding that the issues,
which plagued McDonalds was not entirely, company wide. While McDonalds was able to thrive
internationally with a few minor setbacks, their issues were with the United States market.
According to Robert Harley's analysis of the McDonalds corporation, the restaurant chain did face
diminished growth domestically as well in the foreign market. Relations with franchises detoriated
as the corporate level of the company implemented policies that were doctorial. There was
expansion of franchises with out consideration for the franchise that was already established and
was rationalized as being done in the company's best interest. (Hartley, 2014, p. 87) another major
issue that was responsible for the decline in McDonalds U.S. restaurants was the menu. The menu
no longer appealed to adults and individuals who more health conscious. (Hartley, 2014, p.87).

With many changes happening in healthcare more than often, most of the changes are done to make
improvements, which majority do not see the same way. More people are very hesitant to make

Furthermore, making changes in any form of business including healthcare, would take a strong

Opening up a daycare is an example of a service business. "Services are intangible activities or

consumer to consider their brand loyalty and whether or not they will accept a substitute. Companies

15. Taft Hartley Act
Introduction Over the years there have been several laws passed in the United stated pertaining to
employees, employers, and unions including The Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure act
of 1959 (LMRDA) and the Taft–Hartley act (Hero, 2015), (Legal Dictionary, 2015),. These laws and
acts serve as a guidelines in making union, employer, or judicial decisions (Department of Labor,
2015). In 2012 Pilots of American Airlines were facing the task of striking or not striking, and made
their decision based on the guidelines of these acts stated below. The LMDRA act lays out the
proper standard reporting and disclosures of practices, including administrative practices of labor
organizations and employers, financial transactions, union rights pertaining to funds and assets, how
labor organizations are administered, how officers are elected for labor organizations, and finally
how rights of all union members are protected (Hero, 2015) The Taft–Hartley Act, which can also be
referred to as the labor management relations act was implemented in 1947 (Legal Dictionary,
2015). The purpose of this act was to resolve unfair labor practices that were being exercised in
unions. This act served to act as an amendment to previous laws, which were established under the
Wagner act of 1935. The changes that were included focused on prohibiting secondary boycotts,
required equal treatment between independent and affiliated unions, and altered the conditions on

17. Ways Hartley and Frayn present Childhood in The...
In the Go–Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person
narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo's vivid imagination, the themes of
growing up and self–awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of
Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person
narrative which encapsulates young Leo's fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the
dawning of a new era, 'My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming
true'(Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet

p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator's ability to comment and reflect on his child–self effectively
emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and
suspense throughout the novel, 'now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way' (Chapter
1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of
childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he 'went away...the
relationship between Ted and Marian would cease' (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is
able to analyse his feelings, 'I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and
frightened' (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively
conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner,
whereas child narrator's naïve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis,
believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers' affair, 'I had attacked them first'
(Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo's predicament
as he possesses a common child–like sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that
he is merely facilitating the relationship between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also
presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees

21. Carmex Case Study Summary

which is more important and why?
"Likes" on a Facebook page typically measure how many consumers are interested in the company,
but for a brief period of time. For example, many people may "like" Carmex in order to have a
chance to receive a prize or discount that Carmex offers. "Engagement", however, differs from
"likes" because this will measure consumers who actually are demonstrating real interest in the
company. Consumers can "engage" with Carmex by liking their statuses, commenting on
promotions of certain products/prizes they are offering, and provide feedback to Carmex so they are

Prince could begin sponsoring recreational and junior player's teams. By doing this, not only are

text mentions that Prince reaches their consumers through their website, which I would recommend

consider would be to offer training camps for junior players. Not only will they be able to teach and

allowing them to use their product while attending the camp. This could lead to sales of their
merchandise and also a great way to build brand recognition with the younger market. The text
mentions that Prince also uses social media as a way to promote their product, so I would continue
to recommend that as a way to reach recreational players. With social media having such a large

Documentary Photography Documentary photography is a vibrant extension of general
photojournalism. It is a tree with roots immersed in professional reportage, but branches spreading
to art and expression of various forms. While the more serious photojournalism seeks to convey
pertinent anecdotes about the world around us, through visual depiction; documentary photography
aims to experiment with creativity and innovation at a more extensive scale. In other words,
documentary photography is to photojournalism, as creative writing is to news reporting. This
modern and diversified form of art originated from events such as the American Civil War and the
South African Apartheid, and steadily evolved into a key platform for arousing public response
regarding significant global issues. In the modern world, with the advancement of complex
photographic devices along with a nourishment of a range of forums for expression, the cause of
documentary photography has been enormously furthered. The very definitions of the trade have
endured quite a lot of evolution and of course, debate. According to Natasha Becker in her highly
comprehensive article titled, "Familiarizing the Documentary or Documenting the Family?" the

The Landrum–Griffin Act was passed by President Dwight Eisenhower and was known as the new
Labor–Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. This amended the Taft–Hartley Act in several
different ways. One way that it amended it was in the way that state courts and labor relations
regulated by the state were given jurisdiction over declined cases under jurisdictional standards. The
other was that secondary boycotts were more strict as well as agreements known as "Hot Cargo
Agreements." were banned. Another way that it also amended the Taft–Hartley Act was that it
protected employees' and their union membership rights from the possibility of unfair practices by
unions. Three examples of unfair labor practices, according to the NLRB.gov, are "Interfering with
an employee's right to organize, join, or assist a union, retaliating against an employee for filing a
charge with, or giving a testimony to, the NLRB, and dominating or providing illegal assistance of
support to a labor union." (https://www.nlrb.gov/who–we–are/our–history/1959–landrum–griffin–

29. Social Media Marketing Methods For Customer Acquisition Essay
Introduction In today 's business environment, marketing professionals tend to use social media
marketing methods in conjunction with the traditional marketing methods for customer acquisition. I
have noticed that many marketing professionals seem to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other
social media outlets more than the traditional newspaper, radio and television advertising. I will
explore whether the use of the new social media marketing methods is more cost effective and if it
should be used as a stand alone method or in conjunction with the traditional marketing methods of
the past. I will also explore other new trends and technological advances used by marketing
professionals to attract and also retain consumers. Social Media Marketing Vs. Traditional
Marketing "Social media are online media where users submit comments, photos, and videos– often
accompanied by a feedback process to identify "popular" topics." (Kerin & Hartley, 2016, p. 540)

31. Domination Metaphor And The Boeing Case
Introduction The purpose of this memo is to explain the domination metaphor and the Boeing case
while relating the two and providing a recommendation for moving forward. The domination
metaphor is important to discuss because it explores the idea that some organizations are
instruments of domination that impose their will on others to continue their advancement through
exploitation. I will be discussing the key points of the domination metaphor, the Boeing case and the
necessary OD interventions that address the case in relation to the metaphor. Domination Metaphor:
The organism metaphor views organizations as instruments of domination. Morgan says that
organizations often have a negative impact on our world (Morgan, 2006, p. 293). The idea of
looking at organizations as instruments of domination brings attention to issues such as
environmental and social responsibilities of organizations. The metaphor brings up environmental
issues by accusing organizations of poisoning the general public through food additives and the
pollution of our environment, including our water system. Max Weber identified three types of
social domination. People can be dominated through charisma, through tradition (custom), and
through rational–legal (rules and laws). (Morgan, 2006, p. 291) Within this metaphor, profits are
always considered over people while people are exploited or used to better the modern slave driver–
efficiency (Morgan, 2006, p. 296). This metaphor attempts to get us to

Laura Blumenfeld 's essays also shows two aspects of human behavior, the two aspects of human

35. Disillusionment In Twelfth Night
Disappointment and disillusionment are both prominent themes presented by L.P Hartley in The

demonstrates how a young boys deceived and clouded perception of life leads to a disillusioned old
man, who can't recover from the distressing events of the first summer of 1900. In Shakespeare's
Twelfth Night disappointment is exhibited through many characters whom experience the torments
of a love that is not reciprocated. Furthermore, Thomas Hardy explores similar themes in his poetry
via the use of specific literary techniques, such as metaphors, and pathetic fallacy to demonstrate
how the disillusionment of the speakers past has led to a disappointed ... Show more content on

The speakers misconceptions of another woman's feelings towards himself first emerge when he
believes that "her gloom within at the lack of [him] seemed matching [his] at the lack of her", the
repetition of "lack" in both lines shows that the speaker wants to relate to the woman, as well as
wanting the woman to relate to him. Hardy's use of the expression "seemed" is a foregrounding
technique to imply to the reader that nothing is as it seems due to the speaker's disillusionment
regarding the unreciprocated feelings between himself and the woman. Disappointment surfaces
when the speaker notices that there "was glee within." rather than "gloom"; the utilisation of the
caesura represents the speakers moment of realisation thus the moment that his illusions of the
woman transform into sheer disappointment at the fact that he is now going to be "alone". The cause
of the speaker's disappointment is similar to Leo's in The Go–Between as he foolishly believes

singular greatness in the history of modern orthodontics. Edward is the most dominant, dynamic,

Environmental Factors Paper
This paper will discuss the five environmental factors that influence global and domestic marketing
decisions that organizations must make. The five environmental factors are social, economic,
technological, competitive, and regulatory.
The social forces of the environment as defined in Marketing, include the demographic
characteristics of the population and its values (Kerin & Berkowitz, Hartley & Rudelius, 2006, p.
74). This includes gender differences, buying patterns, diversity, culture, and attitudes. The
Company refers to this factor as corporate citizenship. Corporate citizenship is one of core values

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) writes and enforces all the rules and regulations for
aircraft manufactured or operated in the United States. It also operates the U.S. air traffic control
(ATC) system. On safety matters, aviation is highly regulated. There are safety standards for
airplane products, airline operations, airports, and airline personnel such as pilots and mechanics
whose jobs can affect the safety of flight. Airplane manufacturers and airline operators typically
exceed government standards. On the defense side, regulations come from federal organizations as
International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR)
and various others.
Is technology good or bad? This question is the root of a continuous debate on whether the effects of
technology on society are more positive or negative. Technology has changed the world in so many
ways, and certain inventions have made significant impacts on society. One of these inventions is
the airplane, and the company has spent a fortune staying ahead of the technological curve.
Technical change in a growing business is inevitable. Changes must take place in many chapters of
each business in order to preventing it from going under. Through good marketing, organizations
can continually change and control elements in this environment.
Ethical decisions serve as the primary basis for good corporate governance. Proper marketing ethics

Analysis of the External Environment of Business The Technological Environment
The external business environment consists of four elements, they are as follows: Political,
Economic, Social and technological. It would be impossible to analyse the whole environment in
one essay, I have therefore decided to focus my essay on the technological environment. I have
chosen this area to focus on because as Palmer and Hartley point out, it is one area that is forcing
immense change in the external business environment.
‘The business environment is at present moving through a dynamic and turbulent phase driven by
technological change, globalization and increasingly competitive markets' (Palmer and Hartley
2002).

As Worthington and Britton illustrate: ‘In February 2002 there were an estimated £544.2 million
people wired to the internet' (Worthington and Britton 2003)
The size and potential of global markets facilitated by the internet is unrivalled by any single
country or market.
As I have illustrated above developments in I.T have had major effects across the business networks.
One of the main results of these changes is the emergence of new markets particularly on the
internet. For example in the financial sector there is a new market of online providers, such as E–
sure, Egg, Capital One etc. They are all able to gain competitive advantages due to the low
operational running costs of online businesses.
Product and process innovation is another area of technological change. One of the effects of
product innovation has been that expertise in a particular technology is no longer a barrier
preventing competitors entering an industry. New entrants in an industry can benefit from the falling
costs of technology or may be able to bypass the traditional technology by using some new and
alternative technology. Palmer and Hartley provide a number of examples of this type of change:
‘Consider some historical antecedents: Bic produces a disposable plastic razor to rival Gillette and

BACKGROUND Hartley Electronics Ltd is a well–established company that has been trading since
1977. It has a good technical, financial and marketing section, but its human resources have been
neglected, which has led to some problems within the company. The salary structure is inconsistent
with people carrying out identical jobs having pay differences of up to £3,000 pa. This may cause
friction within the team. Even when the company promotes an incentive bonus scheme for the
production staff, the targets have not been met. And so the bonuses have never been paid. We do not
know from the information given whether the targets are unrealistic or the workers do not see the
scheme as being worthwhile. The production workers seem to be on a different path to the
company's. This may be a part of the reason why they failed to achieve Investors in People Status.

culture and environment mean that everyone is working to their potential, that the management and
team working structures are pulling together, that there is sense of commitment to the organisation's

Mr. Hartley wanted a system in place that could correct any mistakes there were made in the

Mr. Hartley urged me to create an evaluation system that was specific to the position of dealer. The
evaluation process consisted of a weighted survey given to a floor supervisor to complete. The
questions on the survey were directed at the three skill sets required of a dealer (technical skills,
language skills, and social skills). Survey questions that were based on an important skill were
worth more than questions about less desirable skills. Each new hire would be evaluated by three
supervisors, and the evaluations would be averaged together to reach a final evaluation score. Three
supervisors were required in an effort to mitigate any personal bias on the part of the floor
supervisor. I told Mr. Hartley that the process would first need to be tested on current dealers to
work out any issues related to the weight and wording of the questions. I then had 32 current dealers

Historically, unions have made major improvements in workers' conditions and wages. There has

and the Taft–Hartley Act are two of the many laws created to balance union power. This paper will

Unions could no longer coerce employees or management into forcing employees to join the union.
They also had to bargain in good faith and could not charge excessive dues or initiation fees.
Effect on Employers
Employers were definitely happier after the passing of the Taft–Hartley Act. With the passing of
union unfair labor practices, equality within collective bargaining helped employers. They now were
able to file grievances with the NLRB against unfair union activities and could slow union power
(Morris, 2012).
Modern Application Under the Taft–Hartley Act, the balance between management and union was
achieved and adjustments to NLRB were made. Over the years though the management–union
relationship has evolved and the Taft–Hartley Act should reflect those changes. The act kept most of
the policies set down by the Wagner Act intact (Morris, 2012). Unfortunately, just like the Wagner
Act, the Board has not properly administered the Taft–Hartley Act and has made poor ruling
decisions. When updating the Wagner Act, the Taft–Hartley act should also be updated to reflect

71. Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield 's ' The Garden Party '
Both L.P Hartley and Katherine Mansfield present the poor as suffering as a result of the happiness
of the rich. Within both texts, 'The Go–Between' and 'The Garden Party', the poor are shown to
suffer but they are presented in two different ways. L.P Hartley presents one of the main characters,
who is a rich, middle class woman manipulating a poor boy who visits from boarding school
through making him a messenger between her and her working class lover. Whereas, Mansfield
presents the rich to ignore the poor suffering rather than as direct victims of the happiness of the
rich.
In 'The Garden Party', Katherine Mansfield presents the rich to show unawareness of the poor within
their neighbourhood in order to contain their happiness. The main character, Laura starts off within a
middle class bubble that she has been isolated within all her life. Through her upbringing she has
been protected which has resulted in her unawareness of the 'real' world. Between them all, the
Sheridan family are organising a party, when it takes a turn for the worse. Laura is faced with death.
Laura is the only one concerned at this point by the death of Mr. Scott, a local working class man.
However, her sister, Jose is not touched by this tragedy. The quote "Stop the garden–party? My dear
Laura, don 't be so absurd" clearly presents the selfishness within her sister's voice, who is also part
of the middle class 'bubble' that she is not prepared to break for the sake of anyone, especially not

Introduction The purpose of this essay is to define what Personal Identity is by analyzing John
Locke's argument for Personal Identity. John Locke's argument for Personal Identity will be
examined, in order to establish a better understanding of whether or not the argument for personal
identity could be embraced. In order to do so, the essay will i) State and explain Locke's argument
that we are not substances or mere souls and ii) State and explain Locke's concept of personal
identity and its relations to what he calls self, consciousness and punishment. This essay will also
focus on Thomas Reid's perspective on personal identity and iii) State and explain Reid's criticisms
of Locke's theory of personal identity, and lastly iv) I will evaluate whether or not Reid's objections
are good. Locke's argument may seem to be plausible at first, however, the essay will conclude by
rejecting John Locke's argument for personal identity due to Locke's inadequate reasonings and
Thomas Reid's criticisms.

In John Locke's argument for personal identity, he believes that we are not substances or mere souls.
In his argument, Locke stresses to convey that there is a crucial difference between distinguishing a
"man" and a "person" (Locke 221). According to Locke's definition, a man is a living body which is
