Existing Product
I chose this picture as it
shows a journey being
stopped when it should
continue.
It is reminiscent of the
horrific scenes associated
with the world war 2 death
camps. This is shown in the
camera angle and how it is
looking down onto the rail
tracks and the building
further away. This gives the
audience the view of them
walking towards an ending
that they haven’t chosen.
Existing Product
I chose this as it
includes 3 aspects of
what I want to
include in my
portfolio i.e. glass,
graffiti and the
abandoned bike.
Existing Product
I chose this picture as
the trees frame the top
of the picture and they
look like they’re reaching
down.
The trees look like an
extension of the
buildings. Having this
picture in black and
white creates a big
contrast and makes the
buildings stand out more
rather than if it was in
colour.
Existing Product
I chose this
photograph
because the trees
are leaning in
making you look at
the top middle.
The tree on the
right hand side
look like an
extension of the
building.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– All black and white
– All landscape
– two of the photographs are away from society and include decay and
have an element on unease.
– Consciously have to cross an imaginary boundary to get to the main
focus of the picture.
– The other two photographs harmonize between human made
constructions and the natural environment.
What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
Some black and white
I want my pictures to make the audience to feel uneasy. And include decay
and broken buildings.
Crossing some sort of boundary to get to the main focus of the picture.

Interviews
Interview 1
What interests you about photography? Please give details.. I like how you
can capture moments to keep as memories and also like that the camera can
capture beautiful moments like sunsets
Do you prefer when natural elements frame a photo or man-made? Why?
Natural elements to go with the flower pictures and also use the black and
white with the colour of the flower
What sort of perspective do you want the camera to have explain why? I think
an angle of looking up at objects because it give you a feeling of how it'll look
for a first person view after looking at your research
What sort of colours would entice you to look at photographs? I think if the
colours are contrasting and also a black and white picture with an object of
the picture in colour
What to you makes a photograph thought provoking? I think that pictures
that include stuff that can show how things are affecting the word
Interview 1
• Observation: My audience want similar ideas to what I
want to do
• What this says about my audience: My audience want
simple black and white photography with a deep meaning
and to look at the photos in their own perspective.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: By using
monochrome and colorful floral aspects, and sunsets but
not in a conventional way. I want my photographs to be
powerful and thought-provoking and to encourage people
to look at the seemingly ordinary in a new light. I want to
challenge the viewer to consider aspects outside of their
everyday life. I think my audience have indicated that they
are prepared to look beyond the surface image.
Interview 2
What interests you about photography? Please give details. Its capacity to
capture a moment in time and allow the viewer to experience that
moment reflectively and return to the image again and again if desired.
Do you prefer it when natural elements frame a photo or man-made? Why?
Either can be satisfactory, it depends on the full composition of the image.
What sort of perspective do you want the camera to have explain why? A
mixture of perspectives would be good. Long range shots that establish the
scene are good but also close-ups to allow detail to be seen.
What sort of colours would entice you to look at photographs? There is an
appeal to monochrome photographs but the thoughtful use of colour can
really make a picture.
What to you makes a photograph thought provoking? Perhaps the human
face can encourage the viewer to ask the most questions of a picture. Also
the use of objects that are loaded with sub-text ( trains; mountains; ruins
etc.) can be deeply engaging.
Interview 2
• Observation: My audience want focused
monochrome pictures with thoughtful subtext.
• What this says about my audience: This tells me
my audience are not just looking for a simple raw
photograph they want meaning behind it.
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
My product will appeal to this audience as I want
to include hidden meanings; monochrome;
natural and artificial

Research Evaluation
Research Evaluation
Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method
Product Research
The strengths of doing this is that it gives me Ideas of what I could do and inspires me to defiantly do some pictures
where there is subliminal messaging giving the product meaning and appealing to everyone individually.
The weaknesses of choosing the theme for my product. When I was selecting a picture pre-1990 I hade some
difficulties selecting a product to analyse as pictures during that time where appropriate then, as I want my product to
appeal to people now I need to make it modern which the pictures are not.
Questionnaires
I think the strengths of doing a questionnaire is that you get lots of people telling you what they what not only does
this give a wide range of opinions but it also tells me how I can make sure my product appeals to as many people as
possible to get more of an audience.
I defiantly think the downside to this method is that its very time consuming to make the survey and to wait for the
results.
Interviews
The strength of doing an interview is that you can ask more specific questions meaning you will get a more clear view
of what the audience want from my product. This means that I will get idea's that I initially didn’t think about and what
I think will go well with my product.
A possible problem with the interview is that the audience might give a vague answer meaning it will be difficult to get
a good mental image of what the audience.
•
Research Evaluation
What sort of a response did you get?
I got several varied responses that inform me of different styles and
type of photography that my audience can appeal to and will enjoy. I
will do this by using what my audience preferred from my survey to
determine what aspects I want to include.
How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a
disadvantage
An advantage of this is that I can get the replies quickly
A disadvantage of linking my survey to my tutor to put on blackboard is
that I don’t get lots of replies I only got the people in the class to
complete the survey.

  • 25. Research Evaluation Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method Product Research The strengths of doing this is that it gives me Ideas of what I could do and inspires me to defiantly do some pictures where there is subliminal messaging giving the product meaning and appealing to everyone individually. The weaknesses of choosing the theme for my product. When I was selecting a picture pre-1990 I hade some difficulties selecting a product to analyse as pictures during that time where appropriate then, as I want my product to appeal to people now I need to make it modern which the pictures are not. Questionnaires I think the strengths of doing a questionnaire is that you get lots of people telling you what they what not only does this give a wide range of opinions but it also tells me how I can make sure my product appeals to as many people as possible to get more of an audience. I defiantly think the downside to this method is that its very time consuming to make the survey and to wait for the results. Interviews The strength of doing an interview is that you can ask more specific questions meaning you will get a more clear view of what the audience want from my product. This means that I will get idea's that I initially didn’t think about and what I think will go well with my product. A possible problem with the interview is that the audience might give a vague answer meaning it will be difficult to get a good mental image of what the audience. •
  • 26. Research Evaluation What sort of a response did you get? I got several varied responses that inform me of different styles and type of photography that my audience can appeal to and will enjoy. I will do this by using what my audience preferred from my survey to determine what aspects I want to include. How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage An advantage of this is that I can get the replies quickly A disadvantage of linking my survey to my tutor to put on blackboard is that I don’t get lots of replies I only got the people in the class to complete the survey.
