2. Existing Product
This double page spread
is very clearly covered
by the photo in the
background with a small
amount of text about
the photo, which is in a
small pocket tab in the
bottom left of the
magazine.
Then in the top-right
there is a small insight
into the mentality of the
photographer and their
habits for photography.
Clearly the
photographer had to
put in a lot of research
and preparation to
create an art such as
this photo, which is
exclaimed in the pocket
tab in the bottom-left.
The type of image is a part of light
photography but also goes into astronomical
photography. The photo in the example
photo is taken in the Arches, National Park in
the state of Utah, USA. To me at first glance it
looked like it was taken on another planet.
The colours in this
photo are dark from
the bottom but as
you look further up
the photo its
becomes more
apparent that there
is the milky way,
which makes up
most of the colour.
These colours would
appeal to the
audience because it
starts of rather
bland but then you
could be instantly
attracted to the
vibrant colours. Also
with the audience
that I have chosen it
would keep the
audience interested
in the magazine.
This photographs focal point is in the right 3rd, which means that when
you look at the photo you would scan from right to left so that the galaxy
becomes brighter for the viewers vision. This could also show the
audience the perceptions and the design of the photo. This style would
appeal to my audience because there is something interesting in each 3rd
which adds to the photos depth and meaning.
3. Existing Product
This double page
spread also has the full
image in the
background which is a
common them in
photography
magazines that revolve
around locations.
There is also a small
amount of text in the
bottom-left corner to
the double page
spread, which talks
about the location and
the inspiration behind
the photo.
The location is St Johns Point Lighthouse in the south
of Ireland. From the photographers positioning there
has been lots of thought put into where they stand
and there were probably hundreds of others but all in
different angles and timings, which can make all the
difference to a photo, especially the timing as it could
be taken at dawn and then at dusk and it could be a
totally different setting.
The focal point on this photograph is in the 1st row in the central
3rd. With this specific photo you can scan your eyes from either
side of the pages and still see something different each time.
This style would appeal to my audience because the
composition of the photo shows the layers behind the photo
and how different areas can be in certain situations. Also there
are difference in the photos on each page as one is rocky and
rough while the other side is a lot calmer and less rocky.
The colours in the
photo are rather
varied as on the left
its all blue skies and
dark rock surfaces,
while on the right
side its pinker skies
and brown and
darker surfaces with
the stormy waters.
The differences of
the same image
would appeal to my
audience because its
shows layers and
contrast between
distances.
4. Existing Product
This magazines layout is,
the master head on the
top-left of the page,
with the panoramic
photo along the middle
row, with content about
the photo laced at the
bottom. This layout
would appeal to my
audience as having the
panoramic photo along
the middle leave a lot of
room for information
behind the photo.
In the photo there is
no real focal point but
the tendency is you
would look at the
middle then go across
to the left side and pan
across the photo, so
intake everything it has
to offer. This style
would appeal to my
audience as you might
see something
different each time
with my style. Also
with the positioning of
the photo it makes
panning across the
photo way better as
you can just pan across
rather than going
across then looking at
each ‘section’ of the
photo.
The colours in the photo are blander than the other examples as there is mostly browns and
greens. One thing this photo is trying to captivate is the sense of ‘Awe’, which is where you
have no words for what your seeing but you feel it instead. This happens a lot with religious
events. This style would appeal to my audience as that makes the photo all the more special as
its not just a photo anymore, it makes it more of a 6th sense instead. Other colours in the photo
include, greys, blues and other shadowed areas.
5. Existing Product
Looking at other examples of 1990s photography magazines, the common reoccurrence is that the
photography is all about the people in them. So in this magazine the focal point is the 2nd row as the
woman is the only thing there that has focus to it, while the rest of the photo has more blur to it, to
truly make the woman the central focus of it.
The layout for this magazine is
that the whole page has the
photo, and in the top-right
there is information about the
photography and photographer.
This layout would appeal to my
audience because it has a lot of
simplistic aspects to it, like the
minimal amount of information.
Another reason this layout
would appeal to my audience is
that since my audience is rather
young, it would be what the
audience payed for as its all
about the photography and not
the content that follow.
The colours in this single page
are rather bleak and simple. The
colours shown are whites, blacks
and greys. It is more of a
monochromatic setting with the
main bolder colours are the
woman herself and the canvas.
This style would appeal to my
audience because its got a
simple colours scheme with
nothing to bold that its just too
much. Another reason this style
would appeal to my audience is
that its very minimalistic as there
is nothing that outshines the rest
of the photo.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products
have?
– One of the common features of the products I researched is that you find
yourself panning across the photo more often that not. This is because the
majority of the double page spreads had their focal points on either side
rather than the middle.
– Another common feature of the products I researched is that on all of the
pages there isn’t that much information in comparison to the photos. It seem
the focus is solely the content provided by the photos so that you can come
up with your own conclusions of the photos.
• What aspects of the research will you include within
your on work?
– I will try to make sure that I don’t overload the double page spreads with
information so that it has a lot more focus towards the photography.

you don't really see as much of.
2. What’s your favourite style of photography? My favourite is
minimalist.
3. What sorts of content would you expect of a photography
magazine? Information about the image telling us about it.
4. What sorts of styles would you expect of a photography
magazine? Either aerial photography or landscape
photography.
5. What interests you in photography? You get to show your
creativity side by how you take and what you take of.
20. Interview 1
• Observation: They like more of a contemporary
style.
• What this says about my audience: It says that
the audience likes simplicity and higher quality rather
than overwhelming images.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience: I will make sure to have elements of
simplicity and also have highly crowded images for
surrealism.
21. Interview 2
1. What would encourage you to read a photography magazine? If the
front cover was appealing and interesting enough to capture my
attention, I would think about picking up the magazine. But to buy it I
would have to be interested in the content behind it, so this means
appealing articles inside. Perhaps photography facts of interviews with
specific photographers.
2. What’s your favourite style of photography? I don’t know much about
photography, but my favourite are those with people in. Like a fashion photo
shoot or artistic and original portraits.
3. What sorts of content would you expect of a photography magazine?
Photography facts, interviews with artists, feature photos and stories behind
the photo’s.
4. What sorts of styles would you expect of a photography magazine? A
lot a various styles I think, as this will open up to a lot of different audiences.
5. What interests you in photography? I like that it can show you people’s
different perspectives and take us places we may never see in person. It’s a
great of showing creativity and exploring.
22. Interview 2
• Observation: The magazine has to be all about what the
reader wants.
• What this says about my audience: This says that
the audience need some input to the magazine to show
involvement.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience: My product will appeal to this audience because
I will make sure to include a section about the reader and
their opinions about the photography shown, and I’ll get it
filled in by other students in the class.
23. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range 16-25
• The photography aspect with the minimal reading
should make readers just see a mesmerising
image, with little effort to read the reasoning
behind the images provided for the audience.
Gender Any Gender
• The photography should appeal to any specific
gender, and also shouldn’t offend anyone because
with the ‘Human Canvas’ I would include both
males and females.
Psychographic Balanced
• I chose balanced as my primary audience because
its reflects the ideas I'm trying to convey.
Otherwise as a secondary audience I would chose
Type A, because a lot of my work is using nature
as a stimulus.
Social Status BC12D
• I chose this as my primary audience because it
would fit the social barriers and would most likely
draw the attention of these classifications. As a
secondary social status I would say C12DE because
again it would seem more socially appealing and
wouldn’t be too hard to grasp.
25. Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
• I found there is a lot of different styles of photography, which makes my life easier to find
examples.
• It made it easier to think about my final product.
– Questionnaires
• I think with the surveys they are frustrating as sometimes responses take a long time to
collect, and sometimes the data is hard to gage what people want.
• They also give a good idea what people’s opinions on certain things are which makes it
easier to make a good product.
– Interviews
• I need to make sure the question makes sense to the interviewee as for some people it
was confusing, so I need to make sure that the questions are worded correctly. So one
thing I will do differently next time is make sure that the questions I ask are
understandable, to any audience.
26. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
• The response I got was that, I need to make sure that anything I create is suitable
for anyone, without offending anyone.
• I also need to make sure that I do a variety of things to make sure that the work is
to the highest standard. With that I also need to make sure everything is captivating
for any audience, so it has to make sense plus its should hold emotional value so
that the reader can connect with me, the photographer.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a
disadvantage
• I distributed my survey by email, but then also got it put onto blackboard for the L2
Creative Media page, so that others could do the survey.
• One advantage to distributing the survey by email is that you can choose who
completes the survey.
• One disadvantage to distributing the survey by email is that you can’t tell when
someone has opened the email, and then go onto complete the survey.
