Here are some key strengths and weaknesses of the research methods you used:
Product research:
- Strengths: Provided visual examples to draw inspiration from and understand trends/styles.
- Weaknesses: Risk of unintentional plagiarism if not careful. Secondary research lacks context.
Questionnaires:
- Strengths: Gathered quantitative data from a large sample quickly.
- Weaknesses: Data was broad and didn't provide rich context. Responses may not be accurate.
Interviews:
- Strengths: In-depth qualitative data through open-ended questions.
- Weaknesses: Time consuming. Quality depended on interviewee knowledge/engagement.
2. Existing Product
This person seems to have a concurrent theme of taking
photos of landscapes, with a lot of the photo being the sky
with people sometimes in them. In the post processing she
seems to have edited the colour contrasts to make blues and
purples stand out more and seem more bright and joyful by
changing the hue and saturation. This is appealing to the
audience as it stands out a lot and is very aesthetically
pleasing as it seems like almost a happy collage of photos.
however, the way she has presented them could be
improved. All of the images seem to be stuck together with
no spacing, with the images themselves been quiet small.
This means you cant really take in a full images by itself as
you will have another image within your eye line. also, she
hasn’t put the things she has photographed next to each
other. For example in this portfolio there are photos of hills
next to beaches, and trees next to people in water. This
leaves the portfolio a random mash of images which can be
annoying for some people as its not very tidy, which could be
considered to not be very aesthetically pleasing. There
doesn't seem to be much post production editing on these
photos. The only thing that has been done after the shots is
the editing of the hue and saturation of the photos to make
the blues, purples and greens stand out more. Also an
increase of the vibrance will have been made to make it more
colourful
3. Existing Product
This person has taken favour of the medium
close up shot to capture the faces of the models
well. However he has used different angles and
captured different parts of peoples faces to have
some diversity in his photos. He has also added a
black and white filter, or edited the photos in
post processing to create a black and white effect
which is his running theme along with the close-
up shots. It seems like it would be appealing to
an older audience with its noir ambience, which
older middle ages people tend to be drawn
towards as their minds are very dull and
monotone. There is no spacing, but for this
portfolio it doesn’t seem to matter much as all
the images clash very well with each other. Its
still somewhat difficult to take in an image fully
by its self but the noir colour scheme makes it
easier on the eyes to focus on one thing from
another. The post production on these photos
seems to be where the noir effect was added. It
also seems like the editior has done something
to make the skin on the models look smoother,
and other textures to look more matte.
4. Existing Product
In this photo, the photographer has used his
angle to get the most out of his image. He has
managed to capture the street, the skyline
and the actual sky all in one photo. It also
looks like he has edited it to make the blues
in the photo stand out slightly more, most
likely done in Photoshop. He most likely took
this for an advertisement so getting as much
in the image as possible will help the
audience get the most out of the image when
viewing it, and the standout blues help make
the image pop in comparison to other making
it more likely to be noticed. This image is a
high quality shot and will serve well for its
purpose which will be advertisement, as it
captures a lot of different things and is
extremely visually pleasing. During post
production, the man has added some
brightness and vibrance to make the image
look more light, as it will have still been quiet
dark when he took the shot. This is all to give
a false look to the place that is been
advertised to people want to go there more is
it looks very nice to be there.
5. Existing Product
Photo covers the full page
so you can really
understand what the mag
is about. It also lets you
look at the picture in detail
so it stands out more. This
photos was taken a very
long time ago, around the
1990’s so im not sure how
post production worked
then. The image seems like
it’s a raw image that been
taken from a distance to
make the background blur
more, and then cropped
onto the skater so you can
seem him better and it can
fit onto the magazine cover
easier. The angle is head on
o you can capture all of the
action in the shot and
really see what the skater
is doing
Large bold title with an
unusual colour so its
stands out from other
covers. This also helps
cater to the audience
that is skaters, as they
will be more attracted
to something big, cool
and colourful rather
than something dull.
The skater is focused
in the photo so you,
which helps highlight
that the main article is
going to be about him.
It also helps simply
show who it is, which
can give attention to
magazines depending
on how famous the
person is
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
• All of the pictures have a recurring theme and/or have undergone some sort of editing during post production. They have all
undergone some sort of basic colour change or brightness increase to change the light levels or colour focus of the photos.
This is to make them all standout more, which relates to how im going to edit my photos in a sense that I will change the
vibrancy an colour contrast because this will make it more appealing to my audience.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
• From the thrasher magazine cover, I have taken that when someone is in motion it is best to leave the image with minimal
editing, as a raw image helps capture the movements of the person better. It has also shown me the the shot should be
taken from a distance so you can capture the whole body during a trick etc. so that you can view the whole person and really
take the image in. From the portfolio research I have taken in that to make it more easy to immerse into one image t a time,
the spacing needs to be more wide and also the photos need to all be of a solid recurring theme so the portfolio doesn’t
look like a huge compilation of random photos, as this would make it seem less thought out and kind of half hearted. From
the single shot research, I gathered that the angle of the shot can mean a lot and help you decide what you want sort of feel
you want the image to have. For example a shot with a wide lens makes the image feel much more open and spacey with a
lot of room for things to be in the shot, whereas a close-up shot would feel a lot more closed off, but provide a much more
intimate and detailed shot for the audience to be connected to the image. I will most likely use both types of shots as I want
a variety of different angles and feels to my photos. For the shots I have of people in motion, I will most likely keep the
photos next to raw so I don’t tamper with the shot as I don’t want to ruin the feel of motion within it. Based on the
portfolios I have viewed, I will make my photos much more spaced out so it is easier to view them and the presentation look
more organised and professional.

them standout
Urban areas
20. Interview 1
• Observation: my observation shows that this person isn’t very
opinionated when it coms to photography. You can see this in
through their lack of detail in the answers they have provided to my
survey questions. This could also show they have minimal
knowledge as well as not really having an opinion on photography.
• What this says about my audience: it says that they enjoy more

More colours and details as it is more
aesthetically pleasing
In a book so I can focus on each imagine
individually
Scenic photography like cities , because they
show different moods and parts in 1 photo
A little but not enough so the imagine is no
longer raw , just enough to highlight important
parts such as lights
Definitely city centres

it looks more ordered and simple.
23. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range
16-18 • I am going to take photos of things around
the city that most likely reference pop
culture, and if I cant find many places like
this I will take photos of the city and
perhaps people skateboarding as that is
something the youth enjoy. Im also just
going to edit my photos to make them more
visual pleasing, such as enhancing the
colours or vibrancy as younger people tend
to not really care much for messages and
would prefer to just view things as they are.
So making my images aestheticaly pleasing
is the best option for me if I want the
viewers to enjoy my work.
Gender
Male and female • Photography is a universal subject with no
main audience appeal unless its fashion
photography.
Psychographic
Balanced • To appeal to this audience I will try to
balance out all aspects of my work and
appeal to everyone, as photography is a
universal thing that everyone can
25. Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of
each method
– Product Research
– Product research really helped me visualise what I wanted to create in terms of layout and things which is
very helpful, but sometimes you can end up copying someone else's work subconsciously making your work
plaigerised which makes it forfeit and you wont get a grade. Primary research proved the stronger option
over secondary as it gave real-time answers and data that I could apply to my portfolio, whereas secondary
gave me non personal, weak data that wasn’t really useful for what I wanted to do.
– Questionnaires
– Questionnaires provide a good amount of data and are quick to make, but they date isn’t very specific and
can be very broad giving info that isn’t very accurate which can lead to things having to be assumed instead
of it been facts. I used survey monkey which was proved to be a strenghth as it was free to make and easy to
distribute throughout my classmates. However, it has weaknesses such as people I know personally putting
silly in valid answers or simply not taking the time to do it.
– Interviews
– Interviews are the best way to get qualitive data as they are in depth questions, which give you in-depth
answers that provide useful info but they take a lot of time to create which can be annoying and waste time.
In my first interview, I got answers from one of my friends who doesn't know much about photography. The
answers they gave were very dull and dint help me plan my portfolio at all because it was hard to gather
what sort of things they wanted from it. However in my second interview I got questions from a
photography student whoa gave decent answers that allowed me to cater to their wants slightly when I
made my portfolio.
26. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
– I mostly got good responses, but some were quiet lacklustre and didn’t give much insight
which provided inadequate information. such as in my first interview, where the data I got was
poor as the individual had zero knowledge on photography. My survey monkey provided a lot
of data, but in the end it all ended up been tied and a lot of people wanted different things.
This could be deemed as usuful as it shows that I need to cater to multiple types of people
– The good responses helped me out a lot in deciding what I am going to do with my final idea,
as they provided useful info which help me understand the sort of things people enjoy when it
comes to photography. Such as in the second interview, when the person spoke about the
type of shots they prefer and what type of editing styles they liked which helped me cater to
them much easier.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
– I decided to put the link to my survey in a group chat with my friends, in which they all
responded within the first hour. This method proved well for acquiring fast answers, with
some very good responses. However this method could be deemed no useful as your
personal friends are more likely to give silly or inadequate responses.
