How Does Julia Roberts Make Taylor Swift
Julia Roberts dancing the coolest mom–steps with Taylor Swift onstage
Its fascinating Julia Roberts, heartthrob with her million dollar smile is still keeping her charms on, while dancing to the coolest steps on stage with
Taylor Swift, this Sunday night.
At the Santa Clara show, the "Notting hill" actress was seen dressed in a 1989 tour T–Shirt as she moved her steps along the runaway with the versatile
and the legendary singer Joan Baez. She showed her coolest moves in the arena as Taylor Swift continued singing and herdance resembled the
mum–dancing moves.
The audiences clicked some amazing pictures of her while she was giving her mommy moves with Joan and it reminded the audience of the character
Vivian from the movie pretty woman. She

Essay about The Truth of Thanksgiving
The Truth of Thanksgiving While children are growing up in America, they are told several tales of America's establishment and history. However,
these stories are generally not told as they actually happened. An instance of this is the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving
is explained as this elaborate ceremony where the Pilgrims and Indians gathered in harmony at this large harvest in celebration of their coming together.
According to the primary document of William Bradford's journal, Thanksgiving didn't pan out quite as it is explained to Americans today. In the film,
The Addams Family Values, the Addams children take part in a traditional, yet misconceived celebration of the first Thanksgiving. This

The performance chosen was a reenactment of the first Thanksgiving. The "cool kids" were cast as the Pilgrims, while Wednesday and her friends
were cast as the Native Americans. Wednesday is actually cast in the lead role of Pocahontas. In the beginning of the dinner performance, the
Pilgrims give a speech regarding the Native Americans as savages and explain how they should become Pilgrims. In the end, the Native
Americans do not enjoy a pleasant meal with the Pilgrims. Instead, they revolt, burning down the Pilgrims homes and torturing their families.
Many aspects of this film are worthy of analysis. The dual depiction of the Addams family is worthy of noting. The Addams family is portrayed as
savages. They are shown as living very differently from the typical American family. They reside in a Gothic like castle, bury their pets alive, eat
squirrel, etc. Interestingly, the family is actually from Europe, specifically France. The Addams family takes on a dual role of Native Americans
(their savage description) and Europeans (their European background). When they send Wednesday and Pugsley to Camp Chippewa, it is actually
considered to be the camp for "American's privileged children" (Addams' Family Values). This is a Native American based camp, yet the early Native
Americans were not in anyway considered privileged by the Europeans due to their primitive way of living. When all the children take part in the
typical "Indian" activities, the

Erin Brockovich Mental Illness
Erin Brockovich, a biographical film directed by Steven Soderbergh and Susannah Graham, tells the story of a twice–divorced unemployed mother of
three who fought to win a lawsuit against a giant utility corporation. Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts, consults lawyer Ed Masry after
suffering injuries from an automobile accident through no fault of her own. She is ensured to walk away from her case with a large settlement, yet
Mr. Masry lets her down drastically when he ends up losing the case. Erin finds herself in a desperate situation, without a job, very little money in
the bank, and expected to support her children. Thinking she is owed a favor by this firm, she marches down there and demands a job from him. Ed

The same professor recommends Erin to stop by the water board that serves this town to search the records. After examining the local water
records, and her interviews with the residents, Erin's suspicions that their exposure to this substance is what caused their suffering are proved. As
the word of her discoveries get out, many other neighbors surrounding this area come to tell Erin about their illnesses and misfortunes, such as
forms of cancer and miscarriages, that could also be linked to this contamination. After meeting with numerous families, Ed and Erin decide to take
it on as a case and represent these suffering people against PG&E. Ed, being close to retirement, begins to worry about the complications they could

Julia Roberts Research Paper
The movie roles of the actress who became a Hollywood star after headlining the romantic comedy Pretty Woman– Julia Roberts, have run the
complete range through the years, but Julia Roberts never forgot her roots.
In a recent interview with Roberts, the American actress and producer opens up about her upcoming American thrillerfilm – Secret in Their Eyes, and
how far Julia Roberts has come since her romantic comedy days.
She won an Oscar for the biographical film Erin Brockovich, and seems to have reserved away from romantic comedy, but Roberts stated recently that
she would do more.
Julia Roberts, who was the highest–paid actress globally throughout the 1990s, stated, "Individuals stating, oh, she's in opposition to romantic comedies

Sociological Themes In The Film Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich (2000) is a film written by Susannah Grant and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Based on a successful lawsuit by an environmental
lawyer of the same name against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California, this film covers a wide range of popular cultural and
sociological themes. It addresses issues such as lack of formal training and opportunity to capable individuals, stereotyping of women and the struggle
for justice which are some of the most prevalent sociological and pop cultural issues in America. The story is structured linearly and presents the
struggle of the protagonist Erin who is a mother of three and is struggling to make ends meet. After a motor accident which she is not responsible for,
she convinces... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is actually a complex character which the filmmakers use to highlight various concepts of popular and sociological culture. Firstly she is
shown to be a woman who is judged by those around her because of how she looks and how she has a knack for behaving erratically. She is even
judged by the women who she works with as they consider her nothing short of "White Trash" because of how she dresses and because of the mess
her personal life is in. Secondly, they construct the concept of an individual's capability regardless of their gender and class through Erin's
character. She does not have formal training of being a lawyer yet she is able to understand the technicalities of law based on her own intelligence
and capabilities. Thirdly, they handle the struggle of proving yourself despite being a woman in the 1990's. According to the US census of 1990,
despite starting to become more professionally aware women occupied clerical and administrative support positions in the 1990's ("We The American
Women", 1993). They were underrepresented in holding professional titles such as doctors, lawyers etc. Erin is an antithesis to this concept. Even
though she begs for a secretarial position at the beginning of the film, she proves her mettle as having the potential to become a lawyer by the end of the

Erin Brockovich And The Importance Of Rights Claiming
"Erin Brockovich and the importance of Rights Claiming" The film Erin Brockovich is a film that involves the American Legal System, however, it
is very different from the films that normally come to mind when we think of a film involving the law. This film employed many of the usual aspects
of law based movies, such as: lawyers, defendants, victims, a large sum of money, etc. This being said, however, the main character of the film,Erin
Brockovich, plays an uncommon role. She starts off at the firm as the secretary, and ends up becoming a monumental force for the people ofHinkley,
California in their fight against Pacific Gas and Energy (PG&E). This movie portrays the significance of Rights Claiming and how it affected Erin

In this scene, Erin Brockovich was crossing her vehicle at a four way intersection, and as she reached the middle of the intersection, an expensive
Jaguar came out of nowhere and crashed right into the side of her. As we would later find out, the car was driven by a doctor, who ran a red light,
and was speeding. The doctor walked away from accident without injury, but Erin was stuck in a neck brace and could not afford to pay her
hospital bills. Since Erin could not afford to pay her hospital bills, she had decided to take the doctor to court, where she met the other major
character of the movie, her lawyer and eventual boss, Ed Masry. Erin claimed her rights when she decided to sue the doctor. In the text, The Politics
of Rights, we see "No matter how carefully drafted, legal rules are never without a certain range of ambiguity or open texture" (Scheingold, 2011).
This statement from our reading relates to Erin's case because of the fact that she lost the case. We as viewers of the movie know that Erin fully
deserved to be compensated for her injuries, however, she did not win her arguement. Two major factors contributed to Erin losing the case; one of
which being that Ed Masry seemed to not be as determined

Identity In Elie Wiesel's 'Nightwood'
After reading Nightwood I have been radically altered. Not in the clichГ© sense where one comes from reading a book and proclaims his or her life
different, but altered in the sense where I have been forced to confront the issue of my own identity through the text itself. The idea of the 'human
condition' which Barnes explores in the novel brings up for me more questions than answers. Do we all suffer cruelly at the hands of this abstract
notion of love? Can we reconcile, within ourselves, the notions of love, animalism, identity and sexuality (or other cultural difference) after they are
marginalized into the realm of other? How do we step outside of an ideology produced by the hierarchical formation and heal the wounds that we
inflict on one another? For the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jeanette Winterson in her preface to Nightwood remarked "The language [in Nightwood] is not about conveying information; it is about conveying
meaning." It is hard to disagree with Winterson, especially taken in the context of Barnes not being able to communicate her feelings with people
directly; it makes sense that she would communicate her feelings indirectly via her writing. In my attempts to explain Nightwood as a whole, that is
its language, and the meaning that one can take from such a book, I find what draws me to this piece of literature aside from its complexity and
richness are the way in which its characters, Felix Volkbein, Robin Vote, Dr. Matthew O'Connor and Nora Flood seek out one another in hopes that
the one will fulfill the other's desire. For the analytical discussion of the novel I would like to read the character Robin Vote, examine the locus of her
abject, which is that place where the meaning between Object and Subject collapses the construction of the "I" (read: 'identity') and allows the character
to experience and occupy the space of symbolic terror as she sleepwalks in and out of Felix and Nora's

Military Intertextuality
One fundamental principle in discourse analysis is the concept of intertextuality. Julia Kristeva's coinage of the term, back in 1986, represents an
attempt to synthesize Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics with Bakhtin's (1981) dialogism and his examination of the multiple meanings, or
'heteroglossia', the interrelatedness and existence of language and discourses, by which meaning is not transferred directly from writer to reader but
instead is mediated through, or filtered by 'codes' imparted to the writer and reader by other texts. It is beyond doubt that military communication
benefits from and even dwells on the concept of intertextuality, given that the weight and essence of the ideological concepts inherent in the discourse of
the military largely depend on the background information characteristic to a specific social, political or cultural context. ... Show more content on

All construction of meaning and language in discourse, Bakhtin further argues, is influenced by certain social groups, classes, institutions,
organizations and the relationships within them. As a consequence, the language of the military discourse may lend itself to multiple interpretations
and conceptualizations based on socio–cultural contexts or intentions. I argue that the analysis of the discursive materializations of military
communication must take into account the multitude of meanings that go beyond texts. The concept of intertextuality lies at the foundation of any
investigation that aims at interpreting the cultural meanings of any significant social

individuals would rather feel safer knowing their children can swim in a pool without the worry of having a hysterectomy before the age of twenty.

In this paper, I will be applying the relational theory on a scene from the movie "Erin Brockovich". I choose a scene that happened between Erin

was prepared to leave the house. While he was waiting he had an earrings in his hand that he bought as a gift to Erin that he never had a chance to
give it to her, since she was busy with her work for the last six months and he barely had the chance to spent some time with her. At this point
George was feed up with the situation and asked Erin to choose either she finds another job or she should find another guy. Erin said that she can
not quit her job because it was the first time in her life where people are respecting her and listening to what she had to say. Which is something
that she never had before. When George asked Erin: What about me? she explained how none of the previous men in her life cared about what she
need or want before leaving and that she had always bend her life for what the men needs and she won't do that any more. Then, George said that his

Kristeva's Powers Of Horror Essay
Bell Hook's Marginality as a Site of Resistance, is an engaging and powerful comment on the solicitude for all those colonised on the perimeter of
society. That one must embrace this position and identify as, but not be defined as the marginalised. Hooks argues in her essay, that succumbing solely
to the identity of the oppressed be it race, gender or class, stifles one individualism and creativity. "This space that is the margin, that is a site of
creativity and power, that inclusive space where we recover ourselves." (Hooks, 1990, p.343) To instead use this site of marginality as a vantage point
to gain a formative viewpoint and destabilise the deep structures of power and cultural domination. Julia Kristeva's Powers of Horror is an essay ...

"Kristeva is attempting to explore the different ways in which abjection works within human societies as means of separating out the human and non

mother–child relationship and the feminine body. It will also explore how the representation of woman as abject is almost always in relation to her
mothering and reproductive functions. The representation of women in relation to Freud's castration and the religious abject as discussed in Powers of
Horror will also be examined. This chapter will also include a discussion on Kristeva's abject through Barbara Creed's The Monstrous Feminine. "All
human societies have a conception of the monstrous feminine, of what it is about women that is shocking." (Creed, 1993, p.1) Creed gives an
interesting insight to Kristeva's abject and Freud's theory on castration in horror films. By looking at the construction of female monsters and what it is
about them that is monstrous, in particular the archaic mother, the monstrous womb and the castrating mother as archetypes of the abject

Essay on Walt Whitman's Song of Myself
Walt Whitman's Song of Myself
This paper deals with Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" in relation to Julia Kristeva's theories of abjection––my paper does not point to abjection in the
text, but rather the significance of the abscence of abjection. This abscence, looming and revolting, arises from Whitman's attemt to refigure a
conception of sublimity which delimits the material which can trigger the sublime moment. Whitman's democracy of the sublime is inclusive of those
figures on the American landscape, their lives and voices, which are functionalized into his world. This paper employs the theories of George Lukacs
and Julia Kristeva allow the unearthing of the archeological layers of Whitman's text.

It lies there, quite close, but it cannot be assimilated. It beseeches, worries, and fascinates desire, which, nevertheless, does not let itself be seduced."[1]
The strange elegance of this specter looms in the relief, in the archaic layers of Song of Myself. It is beyond the foregrounded inversive space––at
times utopic and sublime, the space is permeated with universal brotherhood, happiness, the "compelled–sentimental"–– that I attempt to delve into,
that source from which generates the repulsive, hidden quivering of a text which, though cast out and forced into absence, looms in the shadowed
relief. The edification of his text and of his readership is attempted through the construction of an inversive space which refigures the sublime: the apex
of the "cultured." I have chosen those moments in the text in which the poet nears the threshold of bordering abject in order to construct his sublime
utopian vision. It is here, this marked refigurement where ecstasy occurs, where material which triggers the sublime is the signal of another text; a
repulsive reading looms from the absence of abjection
An invocation of the self begins Song of Myself, positioning the text as an edification of the American readership: "I celebrate myself, and sing
myself, And what assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as god belongs to you" (lines 1–3). Thus Whitman's work joins with the

Students At The University Of Alabama
The number of students attending the University of Alabama has reached a new high of 37,100. That number is a 2.4% increase from 2014
(uanews.ua.edu). As the number of students is predicted only to increase in the years to come, the University must reflect on the housing options for
these 37,100 students. Freshman students required to live on campus face a difficult situation––lack of housing. With that being said, the best and most
efficient way to cope with the ever growing population is to allow freshmen to live off campus, and build more apartments around campus to allow
thousands of more students to have places to live in the future. Providing housing on campus for nearly 8,000 freshman students is nearly impossible.
The Presidential Villages house 1,840 students. Blout, Bryant, Bryce Lawn, Burke, Friedman, The Highlands, Lakeside, Parham, Paty, Ridgecrest,
Riverside, Somerville, and Tutwiler house roughly 5,000 more students. These freshman options barely fit the ever growing number of new students
coming to Alabama. The University of Alabama board of trustees recently approved a $124 million dollar project to tear down and rebuild Julia Tutwiler
Dorms. The dorm currently houses 1,000 freshman girls. The Tutwiler Dorms are due to be torn down at the end of the 2017 Spring Semester. The

Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously Summary
Julie Powell, the author of her own memoir, was a distraught secretary working at a bureaucratic organization led primarily by Republicans in order to
build a memorial to the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. To further this misery, she was told that she may be unable to have children in the
future. After hearing this news, she and her husband Eric went to her mother's house in Texas where Powell found an old copy ofJulia Child's
Mastering the Art of French Cooking which reminded her of childhood memories of sneaking looks at and moments with books about sex and cooking
she knew she should not read. She was inspired by these memories to cook every recipe in Julia Child's historic and expansive cookbook, in one year.
The challenge started well with Powell quickly cooking the first few of the 524 recipes in just one weekend. Powell began to have a new purpose at
work instead of being forced to listen to ludicrous ideas for a national monument, including a football field built on ground zero, and was more and
more excited to go home and continue her self–assigned project.

The Concept Of Intertextuality
Introduction
Research Background
Derived from the Latin intertexto, intertextuality is the complex relationship between texts, which accounts for a separate field or location in which the
text can act. The term "intertextuality"was acknowledged as Julia Kristeva's coinage in the late 1960s in the context of structuralist and
post–structuralist thoughts going at it hammer and tongs. Translation Studies, an interdisciplinary field, centers on creating a comprehensive solution
for complex problems encountered in translating process. From the moment that the theory of intertextuality was integrated into the field of Translation
Studies in the late 1970s, the concept of translation activity has undergone a radical evolution. Since the intertextual network has weakened the major
and minor relationships between the source text and the target ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Relevant literature review are offered in Chapter 1, exploring where a contribution to knowledge may be situated. Chapter 2 begins by considering the
origin of intertextuality theory from a number of linguistic, literary and philosophical key figures to outline clearly its development process. Thereafter,
it is explained how intertextuality is related to translation. An explanation then follows of how translating activity can be analyzed in terms of reading
and translating when the intertextuality is taken as an effective approach and principle. This chapter also includes considering intertextuality as
applicable to the analysis of the case adopted in this study, explaining why it is feasible to use the framework to analyze the material. The main
analyses are presented in Chapters 3 with intertextual approach to the co–translation. Fairclough's classification of manifest and constitutive
intertextuality is used to construct the structure of this part and source and target texts are then analyzed to explore intertextual effects on translating

Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich
Steven Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich" is an autobiography of Brockovich and her involvement in the largest monetary direct–case action lawsuit
within the United States. Despite a lack of formal education and law experience, Brockovich proves to be the key element to winning a plaintiff case
against multi–billion–dollar industry, Pacific Gas and Energy Company (PG&E).
Often, law is recognized as a tool that ultimately provides justice; however, it also holds the power to silence others. In this film, PG&E ultimately have
a greater voice than the plaintiffs despite the mass effect of the actions of the company. The plaintiffs reside in the quaint Californian community of
Hinkley where it is discovered that PG&E are responsible for great amounts of industrial groundwater contamination. Accordingly, Michael Asimow and
Shannon Mader link Erin Brockovich with the likes of "Class Action" and "A Civil Action" citing that the three films depict the recurring theme of
"anti–business slant" .

Exclusion As A Form Of Control
Exclusion as a form of control is contingent upon the belief what you are excluding is the problem. Usually however, what is being excluded, like a
criminal, is the symptom of a much bigger problem (a failing education system, poverty...etc). Additionally, the idea that a human can be "fixed" in a
psychiatric facility is also contingent on there being one source and one problem that can be identified and dealt with. Humans are complex, and we
can't assume to know how effecting one part will effect the whole. Again, complexity is disregarded for the sake of the image that is at stake. The
image in this case, is a safe and civilized community. Criminals threaten to disrupt the boundaries we have put in place in society. By breaking laws or...

This is obviously unrealistic, but that doesn't stop us from trying. Disease is part of nature, and on an environmental level it is a natural form of
population control. There is a sort of ignorant arrogance that comes with being a human in society. We don't try and live in harmony with nature, and
accept death from disease as a natural process, rather we fight nature and do our best to outsmart it through inventions like antibiotics. We use
nature to our advantage when it is convenient, but we disregard it when it threatens our structures and rules. In contrast, it is worth noting that war,
which also contributes to premature death and goes against society's ideals is not nearly as obsessed upon. There is no "war awareness month"
like there is a "breast cancer awareness month." The reason for this is because war is much more complex and a product of our own boundaries.
Yes, we say things like "war is bad" or "terrorists are evil" but it is exactly that kind of dichotomous thinking that perpetuates the violence. Actually
eliminating war would mean shifting the way we interact with each other in the world. It would mean not simplifying people to good and bad, but
accepting everyone with their differences. We created war, and it's a product of the divisive boundaries we set for ourselves in society. Instead of
eliminating the boundary we act in ways that give

a strand of brown hair make sure you pour it on his head and he will leave they ingredients you need are up here mix well. So we looked for the salt
water and then Bethany primed her finger on a needle and let it drip in the bowl and pulled a strained of brown hair off of Julia's hair and mixed.
While I was doing that I saw James come up to me with the book . "Hey guys look what I found in the book it says we know it's done when it steam

Pirate Jenny: Song Analysis
The Threepenny opera has been around for eighty–eight years and still grabbing the attention of musicians and listeners in general. "Pirate Jenny" is a
haunting number that sends chills down your spine, but is this due to the lyrics or the way in which it is sung and produced. This opera is based
on a prostitute that has to make difficult decisions; it could be a losing game for her in the end. There are many renditions of this song from other
artists such as "Nina Simone" "Steelye Span" and "Ute Lemper" these artists have gained a lot of status. These three versions all contain very
individual characteristics creating a difficult job for me in choosing which version is my favourite. Nina Simone's 1964 live performance of "Pirate
Jenny" instantly catches the attention of her listeners, through the jazz like feel of free rhythm and sultry narrative. While she rarely sings in this
peice, you do hear the expression she portrays through the rising and falling of tone causing the song to be dramatic. The piano accompaniment
which is played by Nina Simone is subtle but plays a huge part in the expression of the piece it helps to give it the eerie and dramatic affect she was
going for. Nina Simone used both harsh and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although, this version is quite similar to the original, it does contain its own individuality. This version is sung by a female soprano alongside the
band. There is a constant change in tempo, from fast to slow and vice versa causing the piece to be dramatic and engaging to its listeners. Steelye
Span's accompaniment is clever and they use it to their advantage, it's not just used as an accompaniment factor as there are number of musical
intervals, unlike Nino Simone's version. This version was easy on the ear but not as memorable as Nino

The Abjection Stage And The Narcissistic Stage
These are the Chora stage, the Abjection stage and the Narcissistic stage. The Chora stage covers the first six months of an infant's life. It is a
pre–linguistic stage where the infant is dominated by a chaotic mixture of acuities, feelings and needs. It is also a stage when the infant is oblivious
about the need to distinguish itself from its mother or the world around and is fully dependent on its mother for the gratification of its desires. This
stage is followed by the stage of Abjection which occurs from 4–8 months of age. The infant at this stage becomes conscious of the differences
between self and m/other and in a bid to develop the contours between self and m/other separates itself from the mother. Kristeva refers to this act of ...

Now the child has a clear perception of the subject, object and the abject. The subject (child) submits himself to the prevailing rules and customs of the
society, the object (other) opposes the subject and disturbs the smooth run of things whereas the abject threatens the very identity and wholeness of the
subject. Objects can lead to either or both fascination and repulsion. When an object is on the verge of destroying the subject's existence, it becomes
an abject i.e. something to get rid of. In a similar manner an abject becomes an object, when it is no longer a serious threat to the subject's hegemony
over its own self. In the Symbolic realm or the linguistic stage the child is further separated from a connection with the mother as language itself finds
meaning within its own internal logic of differences. For example the meaning of the word 'hot' is understood only when we deduce the differences
while comparing it with the word 'cold'. Expanding upon this concept of abjecting or differentiating ourselves from others, Kristeva further contends
that all acts of abjection or creating borders between the subject and the abject at the level of individuals, communities, states, nations etc. originate
from the psychic isolation prompted

Alien Organicity In Alien
An Assessment of Organicity in Alien
Question: In Alien, is organicity portrayed as beauty or repulsiveness? In Alien, a film directed by Ridley Scott in 1979, a crew boards the Nostromos
to explore a distress signal. However, once an alien is brought onboard, the crew struggles for their individual survival. There is a constant juxtaposition
between the organic and inorganic, and the organic is often heavily associated with the abject, which entails messiness and even violence. Beauty refers
to the visual aesthetics in the film, as well as pure, inner qualities of an organism. Organicity is defined as organisms that appear in their most raw form,
are unaltered by social constructs, or has the ability to think. The main theme of the abject is put in conversation with gender and technology in order to
understand the complexity of both beautiful and repulsive portrayals of organicity. Although organicity often has a repulsive connotation inAlien, the
instances in which they are beautiful teaches us to embrace the abject. The moments of beauty found in organicity offers viewers an opportunity to
change their perception of the abject. Towards the end of the movie, when Ripley thought she was alone on the shuttle, she began taking off her
clothes. However, when she was surprised by the presence of the alien, she carefully slipped into a spacesuit. The smooth texture and warm color of her
skin are shown slowly and clearly in a close–up shot, and unlike the rest of the scene

Stanley Pinter's Film Character Analysis
Though the present is an outcome of past contemplations and actions, Pinter does not reveal the past as he wants the audience to think about the
various possible ways in which past can influence the present. Furthermore by leaving the interpretations open to the audience, Pinter tries to portray
that historical archives as storehouses of narratives of the past, cannot be fully relied upon, as these are narratives written in accordance to the
dictates of those in power and as such are biased in their interpretations. As the play proceeds, Stanley, in a long monologue, tells Meg of a concert, he
once gave. The concert was a great success and Stanley gives an account of it: STANLEY: (To himself.) I had a unique touch. Absolutely unique. They

The physical and mental torture meted out to Stanley leaves an indelible scar in his mind and gives birth to his great fear against all forces that
coalesce to form a collective force (they) which is immensely powerful and at the same time devastating. This paranoia is dormant till the time
Stanley is in a comfortable, secure place and surrounded by familiar, innocuous people like Pete, Meg and Lulu. But the arrival of the mysterious
Goldberg and McCann, in the boarding house galvanizes the terror and panic in the subconscious mind and intensifies it to the extent, that Stanley
vents out his frustration by madly beating the toy drum which he gets as a birthday present (though he denies it is his birthday) from Meg. The
savagery of Stanley's reaction on receiving the toy drum is also effected by Stanley's despair at being treated like a child by Meg. A toy drum is
usually gifted to a child. Meg gifts Stanley a toy drum as he is a musician and also because she feels the child in Stanley will like the gift. But what
she fails to understand is that by being a mother–surrogate to Stanley, she has made Stanley dependent on her to an extent that is disliked by Stanley
himself. Stanley's disgust for the mother–er Meg and his attempt to free himself from her (abject's) clutches is thus reflected in his uncontrolled and

Abjection In Barbara Creeds's Horror And The...
During the challenging teenage years, certain adolescents find their physique abject and experiment with their own bodies, sometimes even inflicting
self–harm. Such abjection is portrayed in Ginger Snaps (2000). In the opening scene, a school teacher is lost for words when two sisters, Ginger and
Brigitte Fitzgerald (Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins) are exposed as freaks in a montage of pictures that they themselves provide for a class
project. In Horror and the Monstrous–Feminine, Barbara Creeds suggests that the use of such pervasive images of transgressive femininity as well as
monstrosities in such horror films brand this genre "works of abjection". Creeds defends her ideology referring to Julia Kristeva's Powers of Horror

Women have an urge to expel "this thing" from our bodies that doesn't belong there. Even though it is natural, almost as an impulse, women are
disgusted by it, repulsed in an inherent way. This film betrays normal female sexuality by urging the viewer to turn this natural moment into a violent
and monstrous feature which is repulsive. The monster, in this case, is nominally portrayed as the werewolf related to the stereotypical image depicted
since the early days of cinema. In Ginger Snaps, the monster is not really the werewolf but the Monstrous–Feminine, Ginger and Brigitte dismayed by

What Are The Similarities Between Perikles And Caracalla

In the age of ancient civilizations of the Greeks and Romans, image was everything. Art, especially those on display in the public sphere, was
ubiquitously exploited as propaganda by emperors, politicians and individuals of power to underscore their own political agendas, propagating specific,
ideal public images within and beyond their ruling realms. In examining the public portraitures of Perikles and Caracalla, clear parallels can be drawn
from the respective artists' characterizations of the two leaders– for instance, their stern facial expressions and military adornments suggest both

The statue shows Perikles with a trim, tightly–cropped beard and locks of curly hair visible beneath his helmet. His austere yet placid facial
expression, showing no emotion, conveys his spirit and leadership style– an influential general applauded for his efforts in democratic reform, Perikles
is known for his nobility and enlightened serenity. His deep–set eyes, lined with broad, even eyelids, look into the distance; as if Kresilas wanted to
symbolize Perikles' ambition and forward–thinking nature. The soft, idealized features and unblemished skin in Kresilas' interpretation displays a
dignified appearance that is unwavering, making Perikles look godlike while maintaining the features of the contemporary Athenian citizen ideal. His
only physical flaw, according to ancient sources, was his abnormally–outsized head, which Kresilas managed to conceal with an addition of a
Corinthian helmet. This shows the extent of Kresilas' desire to portray Perikles not in an accurate fashion but in an individualized version of Classical
beauty ideals.
Erected on the Akropolis, it can be inferred that apart from Perikles' sons, the Athenians involved in the Periclean building programme took a
resounding interest in this commemorative portrait of Perikles. Perhaps, by employing the statue, they wanted to reinvigorate sustained public interest
in continuing Perikles' legacy: the construction of the Akropolis. Stripped of any element indicative of weakness or defect, this

It's what I first thought when I saw the trailer and what I was seriously looking forward to but alas it just wasn't meant to be. Though office jokes fly
and we get plenty of the clichГ©d dumb slacker employees to amuse us throughout the film it just doesn't hit quite hit home. Granted there were a few
chuckles here and there but for the most part I found myself cringing at just how un–funny it was. Like someone is trying to tell a funny joke, and he's
not doing so good and even though he's sinking with his stupidly unfunny joke he still continues to try to tell the joke in the hopes that it will at
some part become funny. Where as I can rattle off a few choice scenes from Shaun of the Dead that can still make me laugh to this day! There was
nothing even remotely memorable in this film. I will say this: The movie never slows its pace. I was never bored I wanted to know what Evan and his
friends were going to do to stop Max and hopefully save some of the co–workers. And towards the end the battle between the office Vamps and Evan
and his team was pretty cool. As of right now Bloodsucking Bastards is listed as Unrated however there's lots of swearing, implied sex scenes and
blood galore! So don't take the little ones, even the mildly big ones should wait this one out. Right now Rotten Tomatoes has this horror comedy at a

Vision And The Act Of Looking
The Ocular & Spectatorship
Vision and the act of looking is an important and recurring theme in many horror films. In early gothic literature, such as in Guy de Maupassant 's
Le Horla, the author presents vision as definitive and universal proof and stresses the importance of seeing as well as the act of showing gore. As a
society, we are routinely told 'seeing is believing ' in the wake of any paranormal or supernatural phenomena, placing weight on the tangible.
However, as science and technology have progressed the faithfulness of visual representation is increasingly throw into question, which in turn has led
to societal anxiety. A few years earlier, video footage of an event rarely had its validity questions, whereas now it is easy... Show more content on

Not only does it allow the viewer to 'fill in the gaps ' and imagine what the paranormal entity may look like but the greatest factor that allows for the
audiences anxiety is that they are constantly waiting for a revealing, which never materializes. Some argue that there is a greater fear than the fear of
the unknown. As in Tony Perrello 's argument, the viewer experiences more horror watching the victim be attacked by the monster than being
confronted by the monster itself. It has been noted that the audience will mirror the reactions of the character on screen, screaming when they scream
or shielding their eyes when the victim on screen does, regardless of the role of the character. As in Hitchcock 's Strangers on a Train (1951), the
director draws the audience into empathizing with the evil character in a race against time to commit murder or James Whale 's portrayal of
Frankenstein 's monster in 1931. Laura Mulvey also speaks of the spectatorship of siding with the killer in Peeping Tom (1960). The audience
simultaneously empathizes with the victims on the screen while occupying the killer 's point of view.

Feminism In Powers Of Horror
Julia Kristeva is a Bulgarian–French philosopher, psychoanalyst and feminist writer. Her work on abjection gives an engaging insight into human
culture in terms of it's relationship to larger overarching power structures. In Powers of Horror, Kristeva argues that the oppression of woman in
patriarchal societies is constructed through fear of the abject. "The tremendous forcing that consists in subordinating maternal power (whether
historical of phantasmic, natural or reproductive.)" (Kristeva, 1982, p.91) The abject refers to the human reaction of revulsion to the threat of
breakdown between the subject and object, the self and other. The border which separates nature and culture, between human and non human. "The

"For the concept of the monstrous feminine, as constructed within/by a patriarchal and phallocentric ideology, is related intimately to the problem of
sexual differences and castration." (Creed, 1993, p.2) Creed takes an interesting approach to Kristeva theory of abjection and Freud's theory of
castration and applies it to horror film. Taking Kristeva's theory of the abject and the archaic mother, she constructs monstrous representations of the
abject woman. The monstrous womb which is the representation of mans fear of woman's maternal functions. "Fear of the archaic mother turns out
to be essentially fear of her generative power. It is this power, a dreaded one, that patrilineal filiation has the burden of subduing." (Kristeva, 1982,
p.77) Freud argued that woman terrifies because she is castrated. "Castration fear plays on a collapse of gender boundaries" (Creed, 1993, p.54) She
suggests, that Freud misread Han's fear in the Little Hans and that Han's viewed his mothers as the castrator not his father, that his mother's lack of
phallus is seen not as a castrated organ but that of a castrating organ. The mother–child border is entangled in the complex and multi–faceted image of
the castrating mother. According to Freud, man fears that of the mother as castrated and as that of the cannibalistic all devouring mother.
"Construction of a patriarchal ideology unable to deal with the threat of sexual differences as it is embodied in the images of the feminine as archaic
mother and is seen as the castrated mother." (Creed, 1993, p.22) Kristeva suggests that the notion of the castrated women is to ease mans fear of
woman, who has the power to psychologically and physically castrate him. The archaic mother as the monstrous womb and the castrating mother can
be used as a way of understanding the work of Mona Hatoum and AIne Phillips, both

Threepenny Opera As A Mirror To Society
To me, one of the most important aspects of theatre is to be a mirror to society or to a person's individual psychology. A play should be painting a
picture of a pre–existing reality, not just making up a new one for entertainment purposes. The best plays are just this, either a complex picture of
society as it is or a character study that the audience is meant to take into their own lives. Threepenny Opera does follow this guideline, though it is
most decidedly not a character study. The characters of Threepenny Opera are cruel and shallow, meant to prove a point rather than serve as a vessel
for empathy. Three Penny Opera is a show that focuses more on society, a show that wants us to question it and ourselves. Three Penny Opera is an
important show for modern audiences to see because the issues that it brings up are still relevant. It is important because of it's messages about our
treatment of the poor, and the call to action that it makes on the poor's behalf. The society presented in the Threepenny Opera is one that is very divided
by class. It is an England that is separated by rich and poor where the richer and more influential receive better treatment and luck than the beggars
who have to spend their time attempting to engender enough pity to eat and live. We spend most of the play observing these poor, but we do get
glimpses at some of the more privileged. Peachum is one of these described as more wealthy, as are the police and the reverend. Throughout the

Postmodersm In Gothic
In his seminal study Gothic, Botting compares Gothic literature in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries with respect to their different
ways of addressing terror and horror. He notes that the novel of terror dominated the eighteenth–century gothic writings for its transgressive efficacies.
Female Gothic writers examine the terrors of patriarchal oppression while verbalizing the heroine's anxiety about her entrapment into the confines of
domesticity. In other words, the gothic heroine is plunged into a state of terror stimulated by her own imagination yet, reflected her social reality.
Although the heroine engaged herself in a subversive journey to flee the terrors of the social order, the gothic genre at that period espoused a
restoration and revitalization of the normalised order through the exorcism of the threatening and vicious characters, as Botting writes: "[V]illains are

Horror Narrative Essay
The horror genre has many lessons to teach us as an audience although being the genre most connected with that of ridiculousness. It is regularly
associated with the reaction it seeks from its audience; both emotional and physical. In cinema success is measured by terrifying chills, bloody deaths
and the volume of the audiences scream. The appeal of horror narrative in literature, film and theatre lies in the pleasures it associates with fear,
suspense and terror; no matter what it is trying to convey to the audience. Even when writers layer the genre with academic thoughts on psychology,
theology and the world in which we live in, horror remains the primary outlet to examine the notions of dread, uncertainly, mysterious and the abject....

Films such as 'Carrie' (DePalma 1976), 'Misery' (Reiner 1990), 'Evil Dead' (Raimi 1981), 'The Exorcist' (Friedkin 1973), 'The Birds' (Hitchcock 1963)
have all been made into stage productions; treading the boards as a Broadway Musical or as serious drama. These adaptations have gained cult
followings and mixed reviews.
In 2014 the London theatre scene will be dominated by horror on stage. Productions of 'Fatal Attraction' (Dearden 2014), 'American Psycho'
(Aguirre–Sacasa 2013), 'Let the Right One In' (Thorne 2013), 'Woman in Black' (Mallatratt 1987) and 'Ghost stories' (Dyson & Nyman 2012) will
lead the early part of the season. The power of stage horror doesn't just match that of horror cinema, it can actually outdo it as it can carry a blow that
is extremely intensified because it is live. The question for the stage though is how do we adapt iconic horror from screen to stage without the magic of
high expensive technical effects?
Horror on stage could be said to date back to the Ancient Greeks and their tales of incest, murder and revenge, only using the role of the messenger as
narrator to the horrors that happened off stage. In modern times, however, we only need to look to Paris and the Théâtre du Grand–Guignol, which
presented explicit revenge tales from the late 1800s to the mid–1900s. The plays placed emphasis on

The Uncanny, A Freudian Term, By Sigmund Freud
The "uncanny", a Freudian term, is used to describe a situation or feeling that feels familiar and foreign at the same time. Through the writings and
ideas of Ernst Jentech, and Sigmund Freud, it is defined. Between them the uncanny is described as "...intellectual uncertainty; so that the uncanny
would always, as it were, be something one does not know one's way about in. The better oriented in his environment a person is, the less readily will
he get the impression of something uncanny in regard to the objects and events in it." In Freud's essay he states that "the "uncanny" is that class of the
terrifying which leads back to something long known to us, once very familiar". Being part of the terrifying, the uncanny is undefinable as... Show more

Predominantly known for his sculpture, installation, video, neon, and performance; his subject a strong focus on the human and an artist's
condition. Themes of language, process and the body influenced by the dichotomy between psychological and physical states. His work generates
a flood of mixed emotions as he explores extreme differences that we as human beings experience and relate with, creating a commonality that
automatically connects with anyone participating in Nauman's work. The uncanny and the abject are two words that could be used when talking
about and experiencing some of Bruce Nauman's works. The unsettling nature of Nauman's work forces us to look at things that maybe we try not
to. His video works tend to be focused on the body as a material and the truths which are told from this. In his video, Poke in the Eye/Nose/Ear 3/8
/94 Edit (fig.2), Nauman himself does exactly what the title says. The video is zoomed in on the specific facial feature and projected large onto the
wall; it is in slow motion and on loop. By zooming in Nauman eradicates interpretations of gender and race and therefore only revealing the bodies
truths in this uncanny action of poking oneself in the eye. The video itself is a little irritating and unsettling to watch, as we can only imagine this
action being performed on our ourselves but it is amplified by the slowed down time of the video and its

How Does Julia Roberts Make Taylor Swift

  • 1. How Does Julia Roberts Make Taylor Swift Julia Roberts dancing the coolest mom–steps with Taylor Swift onstage Its fascinating Julia Roberts, heartthrob with her million dollar smile is still keeping her charms on, while dancing to the coolest steps on stage with Taylor Swift, this Sunday night. At the Santa Clara show, the "Notting hill" actress was seen dressed in a 1989 tour T–Shirt as she moved her steps along the runaway with the versatile and the legendary singer Joan Baez. She showed her coolest moves in the arena as Taylor Swift continued singing and herdance resembled the mum–dancing moves. The audiences clicked some amazing pictures of her while she was giving her mommy moves with Joan and it reminded the audience of the character Vivian from the movie pretty woman. She ... • 2. Essay about The Truth of Thanksgiving The Truth of Thanksgiving While children are growing up in America, they are told several tales of America's establishment and history. However, these stories are generally not told as they actually happened. An instance of this is the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is explained as this elaborate ceremony where the Pilgrims and Indians gathered in harmony at this large harvest in celebration of their coming together. According to the primary document of William Bradford's journal, Thanksgiving didn't pan out quite as it is explained to Americans today. In the film, The Addams Family Values, the Addams children take part in a traditional, yet misconceived celebration of the first Thanksgiving. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The performance chosen was a reenactment of the first Thanksgiving. The "cool kids" were cast as the Pilgrims, while Wednesday and her friends were cast as the Native Americans. Wednesday is actually cast in the lead role of Pocahontas. In the beginning of the dinner performance, the Pilgrims give a speech regarding the Native Americans as savages and explain how they should become Pilgrims. In the end, the Native Americans do not enjoy a pleasant meal with the Pilgrims. Instead, they revolt, burning down the Pilgrims homes and torturing their families. Many aspects of this film are worthy of analysis. The dual depiction of the Addams family is worthy of noting. The Addams family is portrayed as savages. They are shown as living very differently from the typical American family. They reside in a Gothic like castle, bury their pets alive, eat squirrel, etc. Interestingly, the family is actually from Europe, specifically France. The Addams family takes on a dual role of Native Americans (their savage description) and Europeans (their European background). When they send Wednesday and Pugsley to Camp Chippewa, it is actually considered to be the camp for "American's privileged children" (Addams' Family Values). This is a Native American based camp, yet the early Native Americans were not in anyway considered privileged by the Europeans due to their primitive way of living. When all the children take part in the typical "Indian" activities, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Erin Brockovich Mental Illness Erin Brockovich, a biographical film directed by Steven Soderbergh and Susannah Graham, tells the story of a twice–divorced unemployed mother of three who fought to win a lawsuit against a giant utility corporation. Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts, consults lawyer Ed Masry after suffering injuries from an automobile accident through no fault of her own. She is ensured to walk away from her case with a large settlement, yet Mr. Masry lets her down drastically when he ends up losing the case. Erin finds herself in a desperate situation, without a job, very little money in the bank, and expected to support her children. Thinking she is owed a favor by this firm, she marches down there and demands a job from him. Ed gives in, feeling guilty and a little pressured, and awards her a... After meeting with numerous families, Ed and Erin decide to take it on as a case and represent these suffering people against PG&E. Based on a successful lawsuit by an environmental lawyer of the same name against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California, this film covers a wide range of popular cultural and sociological themes. It addresses issues such as lack of formal training and opportunity to capable individuals, stereotyping of women and the struggle for justice which are some of the most prevalent sociological and pop cultural issues in America. The story is structured linearly and presents the struggle of the protagonist Erin who is a mother of three and is struggling to make ends meet. She is actually a complex character which the filmmakers use to highlight various concepts of popular and sociological culture. Firstly she is shown to be a woman who is judged by those around her because of how she looks and how she has a knack for behaving erratically. She is even judged by the women who she works with as they consider her nothing short of "White Trash" because of how she dresses and because of the mess her personal life is in. Secondly, they construct the concept of an individual's capability regardless of their gender and class through Erin's character. She does not have formal training of being a lawyer yet she is able to understand the technicalities of law based on her own intelligence and capabilities. Thirdly, they handle the struggle of proving yourself despite being a woman in the 1990's. According to the US census of 1990, despite starting to become more professionally aware women occupied clerical and administrative support positions in the 1990's ("We The American Women", 1993). They were underrepresented in holding professional titles such as doctors, lawyers etc. Erin is an antithesis to this concept. Erin Brockovich And The Importance Of Rights Claiming "Erin Brockovich and the importance of Rights Claiming" The film Erin Brockovich is a film that involves the American Legal System, however, it is very different from the films that normally come to mind when we think of a film involving the law. This film employed many of the usual aspects of law based movies, such as: lawyers, defendants, victims, a large sum of money, etc. This being said, however, the main character of the film,Erin Brockovich, plays an uncommon role. She starts off at the firm as the secretary, and ends up becoming a monumental force for the people ofHinkley, California in their fight against Pacific Gas and Energy (PG&E). In this scene, Erin Brockovich was crossing her vehicle at a four way intersection, and as she reached the middle of the intersection, an expensive Jaguar came out of nowhere and crashed right into the side of her. As we would later find out, the car was driven by a doctor, who ran a red light, and was speeding. The doctor walked away from accident without injury, but Erin was stuck in a neck brace and could not afford to pay her hospital bills. Since Erin could not afford to pay her hospital bills, she had decided to take the doctor to court, where she met the other major character of the movie, her lawyer and eventual boss, Ed Masry. Erin claimed her rights when she decided to sue the doctor. In the text, The Politics of Rights, we see "No matter how carefully drafted, legal rules are never without a certain range of ambiguity or open texture" (Scheingold, 2011). This statement from our reading relates to Erin's case because of the fact that she lost the case. We as viewers of the movie know that Erin fully deserved to be compensated for her injuries, however, she did not win her arguement. • 7. Identity In Elie Wiesel's 'Nightwood' After reading Nightwood I have been radically altered. Not in the clichГ© sense where one comes from reading a book and proclaims his or her life different, but altered in the sense where I have been forced to confront the issue of my own identity through the text itself. The idea of the 'human condition' which Barnes explores in the novel brings up for me more questions than answers. Do we all suffer cruelly at the hands of this abstract notion of love? Can we reconcile, within ourselves, the notions of love, animalism, identity and sexuality (or other cultural difference) after they are marginalized into the realm of other? How do we step outside of an ideology produced by the hierarchical formation and heal the wounds that we inflict on one another? For the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jeanette Winterson in her preface to Nightwood remarked "The language [in Nightwood] is not about conveying information; it is about conveying meaning." It is hard to disagree with Winterson, especially taken in the context of Barnes not being able to communicate her feelings with people directly; it makes sense that she would communicate her feelings indirectly via her writing. In my attempts to explain Nightwood as a whole, that is its language, and the meaning that one can take from such a book, I find what draws me to this piece of literature aside from its complexity and richness are the way in which its characters, Felix Volkbein, Robin Vote, Dr. Matthew O'Connor and Nora Flood seek out one another in hopes that the one will fulfill the other's desire. For the analytical discussion of the novel I would like to read the character Robin Vote, examine the locus of her abject, which is that place where the meaning between Object and Subject collapses the construction of the "I" (read: 'identity') and allows the character to experience and occupy the space of symbolic terror as she sleepwalks in and out of Felix and Nora's ... • 8. Military Intertextuality One fundamental principle in discourse analysis is the concept of intertextuality. Julia Kristeva's coinage of the term, back in 1986, represents an attempt to synthesize Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics with Bakhtin's (1981) dialogism and his examination of the multiple meanings, or 'heteroglossia', the interrelatedness and existence of language and discourses, by which meaning is not transferred directly from writer to reader but instead is mediated through, or filtered by 'codes' imparted to the writer and reader by other texts. It is beyond doubt that military communication benefits from and even dwells on the concept of intertextuality, given that the weight and essence of the ideological concepts inherent in the discourse of the military largely depend on the background information characteristic to a specific social, political or cultural context. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All construction of meaning and language in discourse, Bakhtin further argues, is influenced by certain social groups, classes, institutions, organizations and the relationships within them. As a consequence, the language of the military discourse may lend itself to multiple interpretations and conceptualizations based on socio–cultural contexts or intentions. Brockovich then met with the owners once more and decided that twenty million dollars would be enough to help cover the individuals who were affected. The company then stated that the individuals would not know what to do with the money. Brockovich then used the term that some individuals would rather feel safer knowing their children can swim in a pool without the worry of having a hysterectomy before the age of twenty. I choose a scene that happened between Erin and her boyfriend George. In the scene Erin was coming late from work and George was waiting for her in their bedroom. He packed his bag and was prepared to leave the house. While he was waiting he had an earrings in his hand that he bought as a gift to Erin that he never had a chance to give it to her, since she was busy with her work for the last six months and he barely had the chance to spent some time with her. At this point George was feed up with the situation and asked Erin to choose either she finds another job or she should find another guy. Erin said that she can not quit her job because it was the first time in her life where people are respecting her and listening to what she had to say. Which is something that she never had before. When George asked Erin: What about me? she explained how none of the previous men in her life cared about what she need or want before leaving and that she had always bend her life for what the men needs and she won't do that any more. That one must embrace this position and identify as, but not be defined as the marginalised. Hooks argues in her essay, that succumbing solely to the identity of the oppressed be it race, gender or class, stifles one individualism and creativity. "This space that is the margin, that is a site of creativity and power, that inclusive space where we recover ourselves." It will also explore how the representation of woman as abject is almost always in relation to her mothering and reproductive functions. The representation of women in relation to Freud's castration and the religious abject as discussed in Powers of Horror will also be examined. This chapter will also include a discussion on Kristeva's abject through Barbara Creed's The Monstrous Feminine. "All human societies have a conception of the monstrous feminine, of what it is about women that is shocking." (Creed, 1993, p.1) Creed gives an interesting insight to Kristeva's abject and Freud's theory on castration in horror films. Essay on Walt Whitman's Song of Myself Walt Whitman's Song of Myself This paper deals with Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" in relation to Julia Kristeva's theories of abjection––my paper does not point to abjection in the text, but rather the significance of the abscence of abjection. This abscence, looming and revolting, arises from Whitman's attemt to refigure a conception of sublimity which delimits the material which can trigger the sublime moment. Whitman's democracy of the sublime is inclusive of those figures on the American landscape, their lives and voices, which are functionalized into his world. It is beyond the foregrounded inversive space––at times utopic and sublime, the space is permeated with universal brotherhood, happiness, the "compelled–sentimental"–– that I attempt to delve into, that source from which generates the repulsive, hidden quivering of a text which, though cast out and forced into absence, looms in the shadowed relief. The edification of his text and of his readership is attempted through the construction of an inversive space which refigures the sublime: the apex of the "cultured." I have chosen those moments in the text in which the poet nears the threshold of bordering abject in order to construct his sublime utopian vision. It is here, this marked refigurement where ecstasy occurs, where material which triggers the sublime is the signal of another text; a repulsive reading looms from the absence of abjection An invocation of the self begins Song of Myself, positioning the text as an edification of the American readership: "I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as god belongs to you" (lines 1–3). As the number of students is predicted only to increase in the years to come, the University must reflect on the housing options for these 37,100 students. Freshman students required to live on campus face a difficult situation––lack of housing. With that being said, the best and most efficient way to cope with the ever growing population is to allow freshmen to live off campus, and build more apartments around campus to allow thousands of more students to have places to live in the future. Providing housing on campus for nearly 8,000 freshman students is nearly impossible. The Presidential Villages house 1,840 students. Blout, Bryant, Bryce Lawn, Burke, Friedman, The Highlands, Lakeside, Parham, Paty, Ridgecrest, Riverside, Somerville, and Tutwiler house roughly 5,000 more students. Julie Rowell Summary Brendan O'Keefe Mrs. Vermillion AP Language and Composition 29 March 2017 Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously Summary Julie Powell, the author of her own memoir, was a distraught secretary working at a bureaucratic organization led primarily by Republicans in order to build a memorial to the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. To further this misery, she was told that she may be unable to have children in the future. After hearing this news, she and her husband Eric went to her mother's house in Texas where Powell found an old copy ofJulia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking which reminded her of childhood memories of sneaking looks at and moments with books about sex and cooking she knew she should not read. She was inspired by these memories to cook every recipe in Julia Child's historic and expansive cookbook, in one year. The challenge started well with Powell quickly cooking the first few of the 524 recipes in just one weekend. • 17. The Concept Of Intertextuality Introduction Research Background Derived from the Latin intertexto, intertextuality is the complex relationship between texts, which accounts for a separate field or location in which the text can act. The term "intertextuality"was acknowledged as Julia Kristeva's coinage in the late 1960s in the context of structuralist and post–structuralist thoughts going at it hammer and tongs. Translation Studies, an interdisciplinary field, centers on creating a comprehensive solution for complex problems encountered in translating process. From the moment that the theory of intertextuality was integrated into the field of Translation Studies in the late 1970s, the concept of translation activity has undergone a radical evolution. Despite a lack of formal education and law experience, Brockovich proves to be the key element to winning a plaintiff case against multi–billion–dollar industry, Pacific Gas and Energy Company (PG&E). Often, law is recognized as a tool that ultimately provides justice; however, it also holds the power to silence others. In this film, PG&E ultimately have a greater voice than the plaintiffs despite the mass effect of the actions of the company. The plaintiffs reside in the quaint Californian community of Hinkley where it is discovered that PG&E are responsible for great amounts of industrial groundwater contamination. Accordingly, Michael Asimow and Shannon Mader link Erin Brockovich with the likes of "Class Action" and "A Civil Action" citing that the three films depict the recurring theme of "anti–business slant" . Additionally, the idea that a human can be "fixed" in a psychiatric facility is also contingent on there being one source and one problem that can be identified and dealt with. Humans are complex, and we can't assume to know how effecting one part will effect the whole. Again, complexity is disregarded for the sake of the image that is at stake. We use nature to our advantage when it is convenient, but we disregard it when it threatens our structures and rules. In contrast, it is worth noting that war, which also contributes to premature death and goes against society's ideals is not nearly as obsessed upon. There is no "war awareness month" like there is a "breast cancer awareness month." The reason for this is because war is much more complex and a product of our own boundaries. Yes, we say things like "war is bad" or "terrorists are evil" but it is exactly that kind of dichotomous thinking that perpetuates the violence. Actually eliminating war would mean shifting the way we interact with each other in the world. It would mean not simplifying people to good and bad, but accepting everyone with their differences. "Pirate Jenny" is a haunting number that sends chills down your spine, but is this due to the lyrics or the way in which it is sung and produced. This opera is based on a prostitute that has to make difficult decisions; it could be a losing game for her in the end. There are many renditions of this song from other artists such as "Nina Simone" "Steelye Span" and "Ute Lemper" these artists have gained a lot of status. These three versions all contain very individual characteristics creating a difficult job for me in choosing which version is my favourite. Nina Simone's 1964 live performance of "Pirate Jenny" instantly catches the attention of her listeners, through the jazz like feel of free rhythm and sultry narrative. While she rarely sings in this peice, you do hear the expression she portrays through the rising and falling of tone causing the song to be dramatic. It is also a stage when the infant is oblivious about the need to distinguish itself from its mother or the world around and is fully dependent on its mother for the gratification of its desires. This stage is followed by the stage of Abjection which occurs from 4–8 months of age. The subject (child) submits himself to the prevailing rules and customs of the society, the object (other) opposes the subject and disturbs the smooth run of things whereas the abject threatens the very identity and wholeness of the subject. Objects can lead to either or both fascination and repulsion. When an object is on the verge of destroying the subject's existence, it becomes an abject i.e. something to get rid of. In a similar manner an abject becomes an object, when it is no longer a serious threat to the subject's hegemony over its own self. In the Symbolic realm or the linguistic stage the child is further separated from a connection with the mother as language itself finds meaning within its own internal logic of differences. For example the meaning of the word 'hot' is understood only when we deduce the differences while comparing it with the word 'cold'. In Alien, a film directed by Ridley Scott in 1979, a crew boards the Nostromos to explore a distress signal. However, once an alien is brought onboard, the crew struggles for their individual survival. There is a constant juxtaposition between the organic and inorganic, and the organic is often heavily associated with the abject, which entails messiness and even violence. Beauty refers to the visual aesthetics in the film, as well as pure, inner qualities of an organism. Organicity is defined as organisms that appear in their most raw form, are unaltered by social constructs, or has the ability to think. The main theme of the abject is put in conversation with gender and technology in order to understand the complexity of both beautiful and repulsive portrayals of organicity. Although organicity often has a repulsive connotation inAlien, the instances in which they are beautiful teaches us to embrace the abject. The moments of beauty found in organicity offers viewers an opportunity to change their perception of the abject. Towards the end of the movie, when Ripley thought she was alone on the shuttle, she began taking off her clothes. Here the tragedy of the hired man Silas is depicted with grim reality. Next poem 'The Mountain 'which contain a number of brilliant passages describing the surrounding nature, presents the encounter of a local peasant with a traveler. The reality of the household matters gets reflected in 'Home Burial', 'A servant to Servants' and 'the House Keeper. • 28. What Are The Similarities Between Perikles And Caracalla "Perikles and Caracalla: Depicting Personality and Power in Art" In the age of ancient civilizations of the Greeks and Romans, image was everything. Art, especially those on display in the public sphere, was ubiquitously exploited as propaganda by emperors, politicians and individuals of power to underscore their own political agendas, propagating specific, ideal public images within and beyond their ruling realms. In examining the public portraitures of Perikles and Caracalla, clear parallels can be drawn from the respective artists' characterizations of the two leaders– for instance, their stern facial expressions and military adornments suggest both individuals sought to bolster themselves as figures of authority and most ... His austere yet placid facial expression, showing no emotion, conveys his spirit and leadership style– an influential general applauded for his efforts in democratic reform, Perikles is known for his nobility and enlightened serenity. His deep–set eyes, lined with broad, even eyelids, look into the distance; as if Kresilas wanted to symbolize Perikles' ambition and forward–thinking nature. The soft, idealized features and unblemished skin in Kresilas' interpretation displays a dignified appearance that is unwavering, making Perikles look godlike while maintaining the features of the contemporary Athenian citizen ideal. His only physical flaw, according to ancient sources, was his abnormally–outsized head, which Kresilas managed to conceal with an addition of a Corinthian helmet. This shows the extent of Kresilas' desire to portray Perikles not in an accurate fashion but in an individualized version of Classical beauty ideals. Erected on the Akropolis, it can be inferred that apart from Perikles' sons, the Athenians involved in the Periclean building programme took a resounding interest in this commemorative portrait of Perikles. Perhaps, by employing the statue, they wanted to reinvigorate sustained public interest in continuing Perikles' legacy: the construction of the Akropolis. • 29. Shaun Of The Dead Movie Analysis So this week we have the release of Bloodsucking Bastards a horror comedy that Shaun of the Dead fans might adore(...or maybe not!) Except with pothead's fighting Zombies we have a mix of The Office battling Vampires! We have Fran Kranz (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, The Cabin in the Woods, Before I Disappear) playing Evan a likable guy who works for a sales company. Even though he's surrounded by co–workers who'd rather, search for porn, play video games or nap in their cubicles he continues on as the top sales employee who is just oh so close to that brand new promotion! But when the company President Ted, played by Joel Murray (Mad Men *Series, 7 Minutes, God Bless America) announces Evan's promotion as Sales Manager to his rival... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's what I first thought when I saw the trailer and what I was seriously looking forward to but alas it just wasn't meant to be. Though office jokes fly and we get plenty of the clichГ©d dumb slacker employees to amuse us throughout the film it just doesn't hit quite hit home. Granted there were a few chuckles here and there but for the most part I found myself cringing at just how un–funny it was. Like someone is trying to tell a funny joke, and he's not doing so good and even though he's sinking with his stupidly unfunny joke he still continues to try to tell the joke in the hopes that it will at some part become funny. Where as I can rattle off a few choice scenes from Shaun of the Dead that can still make me laugh to this day! There was nothing even remotely memorable in this film. I will say this: The movie never slows its pace. I was never bored I wanted to know what Evan and his friends were going to do to stop Max and hopefully save some of the co–workers. And towards the end the battle between the office Vamps and Evan and his team was pretty cool. As of right now Bloodsucking Bastards is listed as Unrated however there's lots of swearing, implied sex scenes and blood galore! So don't take the little ones, even the mildly big ones should wait this one out. Right now Rotten Tomatoes has this horror comedy at a 53% fresh...? Fresh, yes I believe that's right. ... In early gothic literature, such as in Guy de Maupassant 's Le Horla, the author presents vision as definitive and universal proof and stresses the importance of seeing as well as the act of showing gore. As a society, we are routinely told 'seeing is believing ' in the wake of any paranormal or supernatural phenomena, placing weight on the tangible. However, as science and technology have progressed the faithfulness of visual representation is increasingly throw into question, which in turn has led to societal anxiety. Not only does it allow the viewer to 'fill in the gaps ' and imagine what the paranormal entity may look like but the greatest factor that allows for the audiences anxiety is that they are constantly waiting for a revealing, which never materializes. Some argue that there is a greater fear than the fear of the unknown. As in Tony Perrello 's argument, the viewer experiences more horror watching the victim be attacked by the monster than being confronted by the monster itself. It has been noted that the audience will mirror the reactions of the character on screen, screaming when they scream or shielding their eyes when the victim on screen does, regardless of the role of the character. As in Hitchcock 's Strangers on a Train (1951), the director draws the audience into empathizing with the evil character in a race against time to commit murder or James Whale 's portrayal of Frankenstein 's monster in 1931. Laura Mulvey also speaks of the spectatorship of siding with the killer in Peeping Tom (1960). The audience simultaneously empathizes with the victims on the screen while occupying the killer 's point of view. The Uncanny (Sigmund Freud) Sigmund Freud coined this term when trying to explain something strangely familiar yet unfamiliar. • 32. Feminism In Powers Of Horror Julia Kristeva is a Bulgarian–French philosopher, psychoanalyst and feminist writer. Her work on abjection gives an engaging insight into human culture in terms of it's relationship to larger overarching power structures. In Powers of Horror, Kristeva argues that the oppression of woman in patriarchal societies is constructed through fear of the abject. "The tremendous forcing that consists in subordinating maternal power (whether historical of phantasmic, natural or reproductive.)" (Kristeva, 1982, p.91) The abject refers to the human reaction of revulsion to the threat of breakdown between the subject and object, the self and other. "For the concept of the monstrous feminine, as constructed within/by a patriarchal and phallocentric ideology, is related intimately to the problem of sexual differences and castration." (Creed, 1993, p.2) Creed takes an interesting approach to Kristeva theory of abjection and Freud's theory of castration and applies it to horror film. Taking Kristeva's theory of the abject and the archaic mother, she constructs monstrous representations of the abject woman. The monstrous womb which is the representation of mans fear of woman's maternal functions. "Fear of the archaic mother turns out to be essentially fear of her generative power. It is this power, a dreaded one, that patrilineal filiation has the burden of subduing." (Kristeva, 1982, p.77) Freud argued that woman terrifies because she is castrated. "Castration fear plays on a collapse of gender boundaries" (Creed, 1993, p.54) She suggests, that Freud misread Han's fear in the Little Hans and that Han's viewed his mothers as the castrator not his father, that his mother's lack of phallus is seen not as a castrated organ but that of a castrating organ. The mother–child border is entangled in the complex and multi–faceted image of the castrating mother. According to Freud, man fears that of the mother as castrated and as that of the cannibalistic all devouring mother. "Construction of a patriarchal ideology unable to deal with the threat of sexual differences as it is embodied in the images of the feminine as archaic mother and is seen as the castrated mother." (Creed, 1993, p.22) Kristeva suggests that the notion of the castrated women is to ease mans fear of woman, who has the power to psychologically and physically castrate him. • 33. Threepenny Opera As A Mirror To Society To me, one of the most important aspects of theatre is to be a mirror to society or to a person's individual psychology. A play should be painting a picture of a pre–existing reality, not just making up a new one for entertainment purposes. The best plays are just this, either a complex picture of society as it is or a character study that the audience is meant to take into their own lives. Threepenny Opera does follow this guideline, though it is most decidedly not a character study. The characters of Threepenny Opera are cruel and shallow, meant to prove a point rather than serve as a vessel for empathy. Three Penny Opera is a show that focuses more on society, a show that wants us to question it and ourselves. Three Penny Opera is an important show for modern audiences to see because the issues that it brings up are still relevant. It is important because of it's messages about our treatment of the poor, and the call to action that it makes on the poor's behalf. The society presented in the Threepenny Opera is one that is very divided by class. It is an England that is separated by rich and poor where the richer and more influential receive better treatment and luck than the beggars who have to spend their time attempting to engender enough pity to eat and live. We spend most of the play observing these poor, but we do get glimpses at some of the more privileged. Peachum is one of these described as more wealthy, as are the police and the reverend. Postmodersm In Gothic In his seminal study Gothic, Botting compares Gothic literature in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries with respect to their different ways of addressing terror and horror. He notes that the novel of terror dominated the eighteenth–century gothic writings for its transgressive efficacies. Female Gothic writers examine the terrors of patriarchal oppression while verbalizing the heroine's anxiety about her entrapment into the confines of domesticity. In other words, the gothic heroine is plunged into a state of terror stimulated by her own imagination yet, reflected her social reality. Although the heroine engaged herself in a subversive journey to flee the terrors of the social order, the gothic genre at that period espoused a restoration and revitalization of the normalised order through the exorcism of the threatening and vicious characters, as Botting writes: "[V]illains are punished; heroines well married" (Gothic 10). Horror on stage could be said to date back to the Ancient Greeks and their tales of incest, murder and revenge, only using the role of the messenger as narrator to the horrors that happened off stage.
