HUMANITIES
INTRODUCTION
The importance of humanities lies in
studying & understanding what makes
a community different from your own.
It is the study of different cultures
involving their
philosophy, music, literature, art, religi
on etc.
Humanities can first be used to
understand the past which has
created the present
The contribution of science to human society
changes with time and progress.
Exploration of human condition through
communication & interpretation, providing us
with stories, ideas & words that helps us to make
sense of our world, does not change.
The term HUMANITIES refers to
those disciplines of knowledge
which are broadly concerned with
human thoughts, creative
expressions & culture.

They are classified as non science
academic disciplines.
The following disciplines are
recognized as a part of humanities:

Language & Literature
Philosophy
Religion
History
Visual & Performing Arts
INTRODUCTION
• Technology is a form of knowledge.
It is not to be equated with tools or
equipments or machinery.
• It isn't always confined to humans.
In fact many animals also use
technology.
• It is not just intelligence, but the
practical implementation of that
intelligence
It is distinguished on the basis of the
3 types of knowledge:
– Knowing
– Doing
– Making or manufacturing
Supersonic flights, single click
communication around the
globe, remote range warfare, genetic
engineering - products of technology.
SOME DISCIPLINES OF
TECHNOLOGY:
Information technology
Transportation technology
Media Technology

Medical technology
Space technology etc.
INFORMATION

SPACE TECHNOLOGY
MEDICAL
TECHNOLOGY
IS it possible to keep calling
ourselves "human" if we can only
appreciate technology?

IS asking yourself for the meaning
of life a waste of time?

WHAT will happen when nobody
takes their time to think about
ethics?

IS math the only source of values
we can think of??
A society is any form of
association of people possessing
common interests, values or goals.
It is a large social group sharing
the same geographical or virtual
territory subject to the same
political authority.
Humanities help us to design what
is important in our own lives.
Humanities emphasize the role of
meaning, purpose & goals.
HUMANITIES
Provide Insight Into Everything

Help Understand Our World

Bring Clarity to the Future
Through exploration we learn how
to think creatively & to ask
questions. These skills allow us to
gain new insights from
poetry, paintings to business
models.
Researches adds our knowledge
about our world. Through different
works we learn about the values of
different cultures, about history
also give us tools to imagine the
future.
WHAT IS EDUCATION?
Education - any act that has a
formative effect on the
mind, character and/or physical ability
of an individual.
Process by which society deliberately
transmits its accumulated
knowledge, skills & values from one
generation to another. Humanities
courses are meant to teach us about
analysis & critical thinking with
particular regard to human condition.
CHOOSING A HUMANITIES
CAREER – CURRENT
SITUATION
Science and Technology related
careers are considered more
"practical and money-earning”
Harsh economic reality - Cannot
take risks with an ”unsure” career.
A humanities education doesn't
hold up to an economic
cost/benefit analysis when
compared to a focus on science
and technology.
IMPORTANCE OF HUMANITIES
Critical thought
A sense of self
Knowledge - not only of world
history, but of the history of human
thought
In the technical world:
 cross-cultural understanding broaden mentality and be more
accommodative of differences
 enrich our existence
Prepare us to fulfill our civic and
cultural responsibilities.
Provide insightful understanding
into moral, ethical, political and
ideological forces.

Evaluate and emphasize the
importance of
altruism, charity, civility, compassio
n and generosity in a successful
society.
Key to a full and meaningful life.
Provide tools for extending the
state-of-the-art scientific knowledge
and techniques we learn.
The study of humanities , both in its
pursuit and the perspective it
provides, rewards us with the skills
needed for self-critical
reflection, adaptability and selfteaching. These are needed to be
an independent learner, thereby
extending one’s scientific
knowledge throughout his/her
professional career.
Strengthens our communication skills
and work with others. We gain
knowledge of foreign languages and
cultures. With globalization, this is a
requirement for a successful career.
Helps us understand the impact that
science, technology and medicine has
had on society and understand the
future scientific needs of society.
Literature, history and philosophy shed
light on the influence science has had
on the quality of people's lives and on
the shaping of society.
Inform us of society’s needs and are
important considerations for us to
appreciate and learn from.
Interdisciplinary learning adds value
to one’s degree.
The true value of a certificate is
derived from what we have put in
our head and heart. A broad
knowledge that includes the
essentials of humanities is an
important complement to scientific
training.
Teaches us that the supposedly
sharp boundaries that separate
science from humanities do not really
exist.
Allows us to become familiar with and
use the creative ideas from great
minds outside of science.
The study of humanities teaches one how to study and
look at how the past developed and how it has created a
profound impact on today’s world. It allows people of
different cultures to come together. This study is
ongoing and continual, constantly involving and
shaping.
