American Dream Short Story
Everyone has their own interpretation of the "American Dream"but no one can truly defend it unless
they have experienced, Base on the three short stories "America and I" by Anzia Yezierska, "Among
the poor girls" by Wirt Sike, and "Eyewitness at the triangle" by William Shepard. But what is an
"American Dream" it could mean anything, the general definition is an imagery or a dream for U.S
citizen should have an equal right or opportunities to achieve great success and prosperity. It just
doesn't exist for everyone because there are still homeless people on the street or people who are
working very hard get very little pay so it's just a shadow.
One reason why the american dream doesn't really exist because people who work hard all the time
and still doesn't get paid or don't pay enough. According to Yezierska 55 "My first Job was as a
servant in an Americanized family. Once, long ago, they came from the same village from where I
came.."What were to be my wages?". In other words Anzia Yezierska worked as a servant to a
russian family as she described an "Americanized Family" meaning they have forgot where they
came from and change their identities to be "american". Another thing that the story states is "They
looked at me with a sudden coldness. What have I said to draw away from me their warmth? Was it
so low from me to talk of wages? I shrank back into myself like a low down bargainer". In other
words she felt like she was doing something wrong because she was

American Short Fiction And World Story By Alan Cheuse Essay
The article "American Short Fiction and World Story" by Alan Cheuse compares the old tales to the
modern short story. To start the article he talks about the old type of stories by famous writer Homer.
Here talks about how these books are written by the culture of the time. With that being said, he
makes the assumption that the old time tales are only applicable to the time in history they were
written. This is pretty obvious because in today's world we rarely see the events that happened in
such ages. Next after talking about the period before modernism he starts to contemplate the
creation of the modern short story. Here he makes a surprising claim, where he says that the modern
story actually started in the United States with the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe. This is surprising
to many because in the literature world most people associate modernism with European writers
such as Chekov and Flaubert. He actually states the this modern sense of writing started in North
America, then went to Europe and finally arrived to the res of the world including North America
again. So we are left to ask, what is the modern short story like? Well, Alan Cheuse compares the
modern short story to the art story. He says the perfectionists of it such as Hemmingway; owe their
credit to writers like Poe because he in fact started it. The art story is a story that is written and can
be applicable to any situation within real life. That is Alan Cheuse argument, and main ide of the
whole article.

A Class Apart: A Mexican American Civil Rights Story
The 2009 film, "A Class Apart: A Mexican American Civil Rights Story" directed by Carlos
Sandoval, brings to life one of the most remarkable civil rights movement. With the American
victory in the Mexican–American war, the United States was granted ownership of Mexican
territory. The residents living on the land were offered American citizenship as part of the treaty by
both sides of the war. However, although Mexican Americans became citizens, they were poorly
treated and did not receive equal rights. In the small town of Edna, Texas, Pedro Hernandez found
himself in a murder case, in which he was charged for killing his employer. This would later lead to
a landmark case, which would change the landscape of how minorities were treated. This

Native Americans: A Short Story
It was a slightly groggy day outside in the Autumn environment of November in Plymouth Village
Massachusetts, European leader Caleb Johnson set ashore to gather up his large group of European
soldiers. "Alright men, let's line up" Ordered Caleb as the soldiers organized themselves and lined
up properly. Today was November 15th, the Europeans first espied several unknown people in the
distance with a dog, they most definitely could not tell who it was. "Sir is that our master, Master
Jones?" formally questioned one of the Europeans. "Most likely not, take a closer look at them now,
we definitely have good company over here," Said Caleb replying to one of the Europeans who was

Native American Stories Of The American Indian Stories By...
Throughout much of the history of Native Americans we can see a pattern of times of intense
hardship and adversity in many different forms. Likewise we can see hardship in the various Native
American stories of Zitkala sa, Momaday, Alexie, and Silko. However adversity and hardship are
not necessarily crippling or damning, in fact in this paper we will see how the various problems
faced by these native americans, be it the fictional characters in the stories themselves or the authors
of the story 's actually empowered them and often times made them stronger people as a whole be it
as leaders of their community or simply people to look up too. In this paper we will attempt to

This choice she makes shows that even though she probably anticipates and eventually receives
backlash from her family and community for choosing to stay at the school and further difficulty in
connecting with the other students around her, she recognizes the importance of her education and
remains at the school anyway not only showing a maturity well ahead of her age in being able to
recognize when something is good for you but also being able to make the choice you believe to be
right even in the face of adversity. After deciding to stay at the school, zitkala sa picks up

met with a racist and bigoted crowd that unrelentingly harass her. However again we can see a
admirable mental fortitude as instead of backing down from the adversity she instead faces it head
on and goes on to not only participate in but win the competition. However the final and perhaps
greatest example of Zitkala sa 's growth comes from after the story has ended and we look at her
life. From these examples in the past already listed and our knowledge of the adversities Native

Haitian-American Author of a Collection of Short Stories...
Edwidge Danticat, a Haitian–American writer, immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve
from a Haiti that was filled with violent turmoil where she lived with relatives in a poverty–stricken
area of Haiti. She soon learned English in the United States and began to develop as a young writer.
Unlike most fictional writers, Danticat wrote her literature about the pain and suffering of her
country from her own experiences. "She often says that her voice is the only one of many
representing the Haitian people"(eportfolio). Her collection of fictional short stories Krik? Krak!
depicted the lives of Haitians at different points throughout the twentieth–century(Chen 36). "A Wall

Little Guy recites this speech:
"A wall of fire is rising and in the ashes, I see the bones of my people. Not only those people whose
dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls who have gone ahead to haunt my
dreams. At night I relive once more the last caresses from the hand of a loving father, a valiant love,
a beloved friend" (a wall 319).
The speech reveals the symbolic meaning of the title and its symbolic attachment to Haitian
revolutionary history as a picture of rising fire is painted when Boukman's powerful words come out
of Little Guy's mouth. The theme of entrapment is starting to be revealed from the speech. The lives
lost in the revolution, those that did not get to see freedom, resonate through the paper and becomes
a reality. The slaves that died in the effort to revolution will be forever trapped in a life of slavery.
Furthermore, "The image of a rising 'wall of fire,' conveyed by the story's title, historically refers to
the dramatic sight of insurrection in 1791 after the Bois Caïman ceremony" (Chen 7). The Bois
Caïman ceremony was a meeting led by Dutty Boukman in which slaves met in order to revolt
againt the white planters. This would mark the beginning of the Haitian Revolution. Within days the
Northern Plain was up in flames as the slaves burned and pillaged the land. "A Wall of Rising Fire"
coincidentally was individually released exactly two centuries

Narrative Of The Disappearing, Native American, By Thomas...
In order to fully understand the first unit of American Studies I am going to orchestrate a class in
which we explore the major themes and perform exercises to enhance the understanding of everyone
in the class. This class will be titled, "Stories: Their Influence and Power." This class will focus on
how stories have the abilities to change people's lives, and will especially focus on the context of
stories in the lives of Native Americans. This class is extremely important because it will give
students insight into not only Native stories, but into their own stories and how their lives have been
impacted by them. This class will focus around excerpts from the book by Thomas King, The Truth
About Stories, and circulate around two main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One simple story turned him into a star basketball player, one could also argue a psychopath as well,
but we will stick to star basketball player. In order to explore this further I am going to have my
students perform an activity. I am going to ask each student to think about a time in which someone
made something up about them, and how that impacted their life. Or if they have ever made up a
story about someone else and how they think that impacted the other person's life. We will then hold
class discussion on how a single story, whether true or not, can change the portrayal of a person. The
second story we will analyze in The Truth About Stories is going to be quintessential to this course
and will inhabit a great deal of the time. We are going to look even deeper into the power of stories
and turn it into something personal for the students. We will start by reading the story about Thomas
and his son moving from Utah to Canada, which is located on page 99. This is a very short story but
it packs a great deal of punch. Thomas is forced to move for a job, and inherently his nine–year old
son has to come with him. They get caught in a big storm and the son ends up reminding his dad that
the whole entire this was Thomas' idea. I am going to follow in Professor Richotte's lead and put a

FX's hit suspense series 'American Horror Story' is continuing to become successful, despite some
lapse in ratings for the past couple of weeks. The show managed to rise above it and regain those
lost viewers. As for the critics, well the industry is basically saying, "it's not that bad." The show is
amazing for the audience except for one thing, and apparently it is Lady Gaga's acting skills. She is
having anxiety issues regarding this and her doctor told her not to get off meds. The ratings of the
show went up this week according to Headline Planet and most of the viewers gained back were
from 18 to 49 years old. This is definitely some good news to the series' showrunner, Ryan Murphy.

As I told you Grandpa Shelton was a rounder but I imagine he had to be to survive. He had a
sawmill, and in those days they used mules to work the logs and move the mill. Where towns built
up around sawmills were rough towns. I don't remember the exact description of what Grandpa used

The Story Of American Slavery
For the story of American slavery to be complete, it has to include the ills of the system, the changes
created in the aftermath of emancipation and the precipitous slide down into the sins of segregation.
Many books about slavery and the brutality of the life that so many people had to endure have been
written over the years. In this book, David Blight tells the story about two men, John M. Washington
(1838–1918) and Wallace Turnage (1846–1916) and their escape from slavery during the Civil War.
Their escape to freedom occurred during the chaos of this nation's most bloody war and amidst a
political and cultural conflict, which had been ripping the country apart for many decades.
Throughout the Civil War, in thousands of different circumstances, under changing policies and
redefinitions of their status, and in the face of social chaos caused by huge military campaigns and
destruction, four million slaves helped to decide what time it would be in American History (Blight,
2007, p. 5). Whether it was freedom from a master or overseer, freedom from living as both property
and the object of another person's will, or even freedom to make their own decisions and control
their own life, slaves wanted a sense of independence. According to Blight (2007), "The war and the
presence of Union armies and navies opened pathways to freedom for them, as it did many slaves"
(p. 6). Both Washington and Turnage found their path to freedom in their own unique way, and both

The American Experience In Alice Walker's Short Story...
Alice Walker's short story "Strong Horse Tea" has many examples that make it unique to the
American Experience. Some things from the story that make it relatable to the American Experience
is racism, the advirtisment, and the determination that the characters have. Racism has been a big
deal in America for a long time and is still relevant today. Another example that makes this short
story unique to the American Experience is determination. Rannie is determined to get her infant
son, Snooks, the proper care and medicine to get rid of the double pneumonia he is suffering from
and she won't give up on trying to get her son to feel better. Lastly, advertisement is another thing
from the story that relates it to the American Experience. Advertisement is being used in America
everyday to get people to purchase things, and it is also shown by the mailman in this short story.

Fried Chicken: An American Story, By John T. Edge
Author John T. Edge, in his book Fried Chicken: An American Story, discusses an anecdote from
Dick Gregory's memoir, one which relays the relationship between food and violence. Gregory
writes of an incident that occurred while he was dining at a restaurant. His white waitress initially
refused to serve him and told him that the restaurant did not "serve colored people," to which
Gregory jokingly responded that he "did not eat colored people" (Edge 6). Eventually, Gregory
orders and receives a fried chicken. However, a group of Klansmen interrupts his meal. They
threaten him by saying, "Anything you do to that chicken, we're gonna do to you" (Edge 6). This
passage encapsulates many of the themes I discuss in this paper. Here, the Klansman relegate
Gregory to a position analogous to food when they say that they will carry out any actions that he
performs on the bird on him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, to certain individuals African Americans are just as consumable as the food they consume,
and in other instances produce. This example is not perfect however, as it does not fully engage with
the sexual and social components of consumption, two major facets of my discussion. However,
through continued close reading and by putting Gayl Jones' Corregidora into conversation with
critics such as Vincent Woodard, Psyche Williams–Forson, and Kyla Tompkins, among others, I
strive to reveal the relationship between black women and food. More specifically, I seek to
examine not only the ways in which the language of consumption represents sexual violence against
the women in Corregidora, but also the ways in which women reclaim autonomy and selfhood
through consumption of men and food alike, as well as the production of

The Characteristics Of African-American Culture In Toni...
Throughout history, authors have played an important role in conveying messages and ideas to the
public. However, it the importance of an author's writings goes beyond what he/she writes, and
extends to how a story is written. One author we can look to as an example of the importance of
writing characteristics is Toni Morrison. Through her use of unique central themes, specific
techniques, and stylistic elements, she made her own footprint on African–American literature.
These various elements allowed Toni Morrison to make her stories unique to her, while presenting
the African–American community in a new light and delivering Black literature to new audiences
across the country. Morrison's stories tended to place a special importance on African–American
culture. It was one of the facets of her stories that remained constant throughout all her writings.
While the setting and time of her stories vary, it seems as though Black culture never truly changes
in them. This shows importance, lasting value, and the ability of culture to be passed down.
Oftentimes, African–American culture serves as a guiding point in a seemingly morally lopsided
world. However, though cultural traditions are passed down through the generations, cultural flaws
are also inherited. One pattern of flaws in African–American culture that Morrison acknowledges is
shown in the propensity to overvalue material goods and undervalue nature, while falling for
systems that abuse them. For instance, in Tar Baby,

Short Stories In Native American Literature
Native American literature is in its self a very unique way of telling stories. In these types of stories,
I found that the stories were much different than the stories of the northern American writers I was
used too. What I found was the most interesting about the native American writers that I was reading
about is how similar the short stories and poems seemed. Erna Gunther, the author of the Native
American Literature article stated, "These include ancient hieroglyphic and pictographic writings of
Middle America as well as an extensive set of folktales, myths, and oral histories that were
transmitted for centuries by storytellers and that live on in the language works of many
contemporary American Indian writers" (Gunther). There was a very clear idea that the native
American writes were more alike in the themes and ideas that they were writing about. It is not a
surprise when I read and come across writers who have very different ways in telling a story or
poem. But what seemed to interest me when reading the work of two different Native American
writers is how similar they are and not as different as one would imagine. The different prospective
of writers are their true identities as a writer so it is amazing to see when some writers can see
through the same lens. When researching Native American writers, I came across two writers, both
women, with a similar back ground and also a very similar was of showing amazing imagery when
telling the stories. It was very clear

"owner" of the cattle. The son accidentally killed the man and fled back to his father's teepee only to
realize that he was too late and that his father had died. He was so conditioned by the white man that
he had forgotten his ancestors' ways of survival.

The American Flag: A Short Story
The leaves were changing color and falling around me in a twisting dance; a whirlwind of a fire's
colors displaced by the wind. It was beautiful. A man dressed in a suit with shiny medals walked
over to me, "Would you like to hold a flag in the ceremony?" I nodded my head so much I felt dizzy
afterwards. I've been looking forward to this, I thought, with a cheeky grin spreading over my face,
bouncing up and down behind him. The man showed me a towering flag that was twice my size. As
I carefully observed the cloth and colors, I realized that it wasn't the American Flag. I pouted up at
the flag, trying to use my eyes to change its form, the same way I had seen a superhero do in a
cartoon I had watched. It didn't work. I tried again, maybe if

Compare And Contrast The American Horror Story And The...
American Horror Story and the Amazing World of Gumball Compared Ryan Murphy's anthology
American Horror Story shows a side of evil and darkness that none of us could ever imagine. Ben
Bocquelet's animated TV show The Amazing World of Gumball represents that unordinary, innocent
part of ourselves that we often forget about. In this paper, I will be comparing the similarities and
the differences of the two, drastically different shows. American Horror Story (AHS) has a
malevolent, dystopian view on the environment and those in it, while The Amazing World of
Gumball (Gumball) tries to pull off a more welcoming, friendly stance. AHS tends to focus more on
the negatives and the evil in the world like murder, illegal drugs, alcohol, lying, manipulation, and
abuse. The show's story can be written in some of the bluntest ways as possible. There is no beating
around the bush or hiding under the blanket. Gumball gives a display of happiness and a fantasy of
what our childhoods could be like. The joy and fun of being a child is shown in a way that younger
kids tend to overlook. The view of the show normally comes off as "fun, innocent humor." AHS's
way of presentation is meant to give off an antiutopian type of reality to appeal to those who enjoy
or find interest in the twisted side of life. Gumball is animated the way it is to have a stronger appeal
to children and give off that vibe of utopia and being carefree. AHS's characters' contain those dark,
gloomy characteristics that

Look For It in Bonnie Jo Campbell's Short Story...
Look For It I have seen short story collections at garage sales, thrift stores, and bookstores. I have
never actually picked one up and read the front or the back covers. Short stories never interested me
for the simple fact of their being short. With Bonnie Jo Campbell's writing in her collection
American Salvage I can appreciate a story without the full beginning, middle, and end. Readers will
be occupied by Campbell's use of detail and her depressing story lines with hidden love. Campbell
writes realistic stories that will grip your bones. As the reader you might forget how short a story
may be because of the way Campbell grabs your attention instantly. "The Yard Man" begins
explaining the sightings of a snake. The main character Jerry explains the snake as one of a kind. He
attempts touching the snake but the snake and Jerry are disrupted by a shriek from his wife Natalie.
She has full view of the snake. Natalie demands Jerry kill the snake instantly. Jerry tries, but fails as
the snake slithers across the overgrown grass. Jerry informs shaken up Natalie the snake is nothing

American Horror Story
American Horror Story is a television show created by the brilliant Ryan Murphy. The show has an
interesting format which consisted of every season being a new story with new characters.
Sometimes actors would come back with new parts, and others would leave and come back later.
This format keeps the show fresh and interesting, with each season feeling like a new show
completely.
Season 3 of American Horror Story was labeled "Coven." A season set in New Orleans involving
two tribes of witches, both of which being said to have sprang from Salem. At first this had confused
me, are they saying all magic comes from Tituba in Salem? Europe has a history of magic, this
doesn't make sense. After finding an interview with Ryan Murphy, he explained that it was just that
one bloodline had come from Salem, but that there were other bloodlines that had come from other
areas as well.

very valuable to the team considering how flexible he was being able to play almost any position on

women who worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and played an
essential role in sending John Glenn to space amidst a burgeoning Space Race between the United
States of America and Russia. Based in Hampton, Virginia in the 1960's, film depicts the deep

Katherine, in spite of her academic depth and brilliance, was deliberately marginalized by her peers.
As she was the only black person in the office, her peers made sure to provide her with a "colored"
coffee pot which they did not fill with coffee. However, the most blatant injustice was the fact that
she lost hours of work because she was forced to run back and forth to the only "colored" bathroom
on the entire NASA complex. Nevertheless, her struggles remained an unseen issue to her
colleagues because it was not their reality, and the lack of having a bathroom near their desk did not
negatively impact them. It was not until she was questioned about her daily absence that she was
able to raise the problem with her supervisors and confront her peers. It took her raising the issue,
making this "hidden" issue visible, for quantifiable change to take place. Sometimes in order for
change to take place, a marginalized group must be willing to make visible injustices they face and
someone in a position of authority be prepared to articulate how that injustice is negatively

African American Singular Story
Today, the African American community has a very definitive, restrictive singular story, and though
this story might be correct about some members of the community, it is not for others. Adichie
reminds us that the African American stereotype and singular story, although possibly true, is very
incomplete and makes one story become the only story about a group of people. Personally, I have
been lucky enough to have experienced many different social and economic situations, and in every
place I have been, I have met many different African Americans. Not once have I encountered an
African American who were the same and who definitely fit their singular story.

They fuel racial profiling, describing what someone in their group must be like and refuse to accept
anyone who escapes their molds. This restricting idea can only be broken by stepping out of our
bubbles and reaching out to those in different communities. The best cure is exposure. There is more
than just a single profile for a group of people because not one member has experienced the same
situations or was brought up in the same places. Society must stop using the singular story to define
a continent of people and instead publish and listen to the individual stories because these individual
stories may empower people in similar communities to rise up. These individual stories can show
people that just like this person, one can also become something great. These individual stories of
triumph and hardships can repair a broken dignity of a certain group and allow for more acceptance,
empowerment, and equality. Stories are powerful, but there is an eminent danger in relying too
heavily on a story that ties to a specific identify. If one only sticks to certain characterization or
description of a group of people, one can make a many faulty generalizations. For everyone, the key
is to be aware of and to constantly seek out different stories, because no one story will ever be the

Suzy Song was Victor's only insight on what his father had become since he left the reservation. In
the film Victor and Suzy have a conversation that helped Victor forgive his father for his childhood

this conversation never happened, the only idea of Victor forgiving his father is by agree with
Thomas about throwing his father's ashes over the falls so he can rise again [Alexie, "Phoenix" 12].
Alexie could have added this scene instead of just sticking with the ending of spreading his ashes for
a few different reasons, but the major reasoning for introducing Suzy Song was to show Victor
growing as a person and becoming more of an adult. Forgiving his father and coming to terms with
what happened to him throughout his childhood is something that shows extreme maturity. Victor's
maturity also was shown when the film added an additional scene, of a car accident that they were

was with a jack rabbit which they joked was the only living thing in Nevada [Alexie, "Phoenix" 10}.

Many objects have a story to tell. Those stories can be very historical and eventful. Some are not
just objects, but structures and monuments. Some are even unexplainable and have been studied for
years. Native Americans have many stories and objects to tell stories to other generations. The
headdress had a very important part in the story of how the Native Americans survived the fight for
this land. The fight between the Indians, Cougars, and Vikings was a great battle in Georgia history
that is not well–known to many people except the remaining descendants. A very long time ago,
before the land was claimed by anyone, the Indians had found the land. For much time they had
suffered from other violent wars with Native tribes and were forced to abandon their land to avoid
more war. The land was perfect for them; it was big enough for agriculture and homes. They went to
gather supplies to build huts. An Indian, alone in the woods gathering more supplies, was
unexpectedly attacked by a cougar. Its razor claws cut various spots on the Indian and its sharp teeth

The Jazz Singer : A Jewish American Story Essay
At its core, The Jazz Singer is ostensibly a Jewish–American story. The central conflict is Jakie
Rabinowitz's heritage, family, and upbringing coming to a head with his chosen career and where
his heart lies: performance in an American pop cultural milieu. A reading of the film suggests that
although hybridity can be found between the old and the new; the traditional and the modern; they
are fundamentally in conflict with each other and cannot co–exist in their established forms: one
must supersede the other. Cantor Rabinowitz is introduced with an intertitle description of his
religious role in the synagogue, saying that he "stubbornly held to the ancient traditions of his race".
The adult Jakie Rabinowitz, by contrast, is introduced eating ham and eggs in a café before
performing two numbers in the genre forbidden to him by his father as it debases "the voice God
gave him." He has changed his name – like Al Jolson, originally born Asa Yoelson – to Jack Robin,
as he announces to his parents in a letter, who show concern over his choice of partner: his father
thinks she may be (which indeed she is) a shiksa, while his mother emphasises that a non–ethnic
name is not indicative of heritage (or lack thereof) in the "theayter." Quintessentially American 'Jazz'
music and performance is diametrically opposed to "the songs of Israel." In The Jazz Singer, Jewish
culture is preserved and assimilated into American life, but Jewish ethnicity is rendered invisible in
showbusiness, and

American Sign Language And Numerical Stories
A–Z stories in American Sign Language and numerical stories as well were introduced around the
1940's (Bauman). Gilbert Eastman stated that A–Z and numerical stories were most likely created as
early as the 1900's at the Ohio School for the Deaf (Bauman). However, with the advanced
technology of the 20th century American Sign Language numerical and A–Z stories may be
cherished and videorecorded for future generations (American Sign Language Literature). What are
A–Z and numerical stories? A–Z stories are stories created in American Sign Language that begin
with the letter A and continue in succession throughout the alphabet to Z. Numerical stories are
similar in that it begins with 1 and continues in some sort of numerical sequence. ... Show more

Although, there rules that apply to both forms of storytelling. The first rule is that the story
incorporates paralinguistic mechanisms such as pausing, space, etc. (Bauman). The second rule is
that the story flows naturally, and clearly makes sense. It is not allowed that a storyteller has a story
that is choppy or jumpy to the point that the viewer does not understand. One of the most important
rules is that the storyteller succeeds in continuing the story in alphabetical, or numerical, order.
Similarly, if one tells the story in the reverse order, one cannot skip a letter, or number (Bauman).
Lastly, for alphabetical stories there are allowable deviations and those that are not allowed. For
example, many storytellers interchange "2" hand shapes such as "N," "H," "U," and "V." This
deviation, along with the interchange of the "3" hand shapes "M" and "W," are allowable deviations
(Bauman). However, the usage of the "time out" sign as "T" in A–Z stories is an example of a
deviation that is not allowed (Bauman). These vital rules to alphabetical and numerical storytelling
aid in contributing to the overall purpose. A–Z and numerical stories have multiple purposes,
however, the main purpose is that of a source of entertainment (American Sign Language
Literature). Similar to our American Sign Language class, classes throughout the world are assigned
to create or research A–Z and numerical stories for school assignments. Although, they are

Shirley Crisholm 's Story : An African American Woman
Shirley Crisholm's story takes place in the early 1900's in America. She had to endure life constantly
being categorized and labeled against her true qualities. The society of her time did not see women
as they did men, nor was there acknowledgement to the adequacy of any person outside of being
born White. During this time, the white male was held at the top of the food chain. White females
reigning second, black males third, and black women at the very bottom of the barrel. From birth,
she was only seen as a black female and would have to work harder than the average American man,
and probably white woman, to be recognized for her merit. Being an African–American woman,
Shirley's chances of success and notoriety were slim to none. However, Shirley Crisholm did not
believe in the systematic prejudice that was being thrown at the Black community or towards
herself. Shirley knew she was more than just the labels placed beside her name. She wanted to make
change in America and open the eyes and minds of everyone around her. The knowledge of her
potential was seeded into Shirley's mind from a young age. Though born in America, she spent her
youth growing up in Barbados. Within living there, her community consisted of black men and
women living and prospering in the same ways their white counterparts did in America. She grew up
knowing and experiencing people of color being just as capable of duty and work as any other race
would. Her proficiency gave her the determination and

American History X : The Story Of Two Brothers
American History X
"They (African Americans) are a burden to the advancement of the white race," a comment that is
said by a Danny Vinyard, perfectly demonstrates the racist attitudes, which result in violence, that
are shown throughout American History X. The movie tells the story of two brothers, Derek and
Danny Vinyard, who become victims of their surroundings and a product of the people they emulate.
Derek, Danny's older brother, is at first portrayed as the leader of the Skinheads, a neo–Nazi, Venice
Beach gang filled with hatred towards any non–white groups especially African Americans. This
hatred is intensified by the need to be superior, but in order to accomplish this, another group must
be deemed inferior, and therefore oppressed, in this case African Americans. At the beginning of the
movie, Derek is sent to prison for manslaughter, leaving his little brother to be alone and fall deeper
into a hole of hatred and the beliefs of the gang. On the other hand, Derek experiences a series of
events while in prison that lead him to a drastic transformation. Through Derek's transformative
journey, the movie depicts that even though hatred is a source of violence and exclusion, the anger
brought about from hatred can lead to a positive personal development.
American History X shows how Derek's persona is a product of the people he emulates. We first see
this when Derek's dad is surprised by how he enthusiastically speaks about his African American

American Indian Stories Sparknotes
In her book American Indian Stories, Zitkala–Sa's central role as both an activist and writer surfaces,
which uniquely combines autobiography and fiction and represents an attempt to merge cultural
critique with aesthetic form, especially surrounding such fundamental matters as religion. In the
tradition of sentimental, autobiographical fiction, this work addresses keen issues for American
Indians' dilemmas with assimilation. In Parts IV and V of "School Days," for example,
she vividly describes a little girl's nightmares of paleface devils and delineates her bitterness when
her classmate died with an open Bible on her bed. In this groundbreaking scene, she inverts the
allegation of Indian religion as superstition by labeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While she and her husband denounced the Peyote religion due to their first–hand observation of
peyote's destructive––often deadly––effects, they asserted the superiority of Indian spirituality over
the disregard for nature, disrespect of other cultures, and depredation of people which accompanied
alleged Christian practices such as stripping children from their language, culture, religion, family,
and environment, the blatant injustice and trauma of which the reader poignantly feels in her fiction
during the hair–cutting scene and in the mother's desperate cry to her departed warrior brothers.
This collection of stories and the autobiographical account of her school days at White's Manual
Institute in Wabash, Indiana, and later at Earlham College provide insight into the struggle of Indian
peoples in the early twentieth century to protect their heritage while developing a modern Indian
identity.
Zitkala–Sa makes the reader feel how shocking and horrifying our comfortable culture was to
children who grew up in a different culture, beginning with the cutting of her hair. There are the
"loud, metallic voice" of the bell and the "annoying clatter of shoes on bare
floors." There is always a "clash of harsh noises" but mostly there is the

Native American Creation Stories Summary
What is a reasonable explanation for the purpose of the Native American Creation Stories? Explain
the obvious differences in the effects of the creation stories being delivered in the traditional oral
tradition as opposed to being read as one written narrative. Think about what happens when stories
are told orally and as a "people" instead of from a single author's point of view. How reliable are the
narratives as translations of oral tales? What is a reasonable explanation for the purpose of the
Native American Creation Stories? For this problem, our first and most obvious explanation is that
the Native American Creation Stories allowed for history to easily be passed through oral traditions,

American Dream Short Story

  • 1. American Dream Short Story Everyone has their own interpretation of the "American Dream"but no one can truly defend it unless they have experienced, Base on the three short stories "America and I" by Anzia Yezierska, "Among the poor girls" by Wirt Sike, and "Eyewitness at the triangle" by William Shepard. But what is an "American Dream" it could mean anything, the general definition is an imagery or a dream for U.S citizen should have an equal right or opportunities to achieve great success and prosperity. It just doesn't exist for everyone because there are still homeless people on the street or people who are working very hard get very little pay so it's just a shadow. One reason why the american dream doesn't really exist because people who work hard all the time and still doesn't get paid or don't pay enough. According to Yezierska 55 "My first Job was as a servant in an Americanized family. Once, long ago, they came from the same village from where I came.."What were to be my wages?". In other words Anzia Yezierska worked as a servant to a russian family as she described an "Americanized Family" meaning they have forgot where they came from and change their identities to be "american". Another thing that the story states is "They looked at me with a sudden coldness. What have I said to draw away from me their warmth? Was it so low from me to talk of wages? I shrank back into myself like a low down bargainer". In other words she felt like she was doing something wrong because she was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. American Short Fiction And World Story By Alan Cheuse Essay The article "American Short Fiction and World Story" by Alan Cheuse compares the old tales to the modern short story. To start the article he talks about the old type of stories by famous writer Homer. Here talks about how these books are written by the culture of the time. With that being said, he makes the assumption that the old time tales are only applicable to the time in history they were written. This is pretty obvious because in today's world we rarely see the events that happened in such ages. Next after talking about the period before modernism he starts to contemplate the creation of the modern short story. Here he makes a surprising claim, where he says that the modern story actually started in the United States with the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe. This is surprising to many because in the literature world most people associate modernism with European writers such as Chekov and Flaubert. He actually states the this modern sense of writing started in North America, then went to Europe and finally arrived to the res of the world including North America again. So we are left to ask, what is the modern short story like? Well, Alan Cheuse compares the modern short story to the art story. He says the perfectionists of it such as Hemmingway; owe their credit to writers like Poe because he in fact started it. The art story is a story that is written and can be applicable to any situation within real life. That is Alan Cheuse argument, and main ide of the whole article. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Class Apart: A Mexican American Civil Rights Story The 2009 film, "A Class Apart: A Mexican American Civil Rights Story" directed by Carlos Sandoval, brings to life one of the most remarkable civil rights movement. With the American victory in the Mexican–American war, the United States was granted ownership of Mexican territory. The residents living on the land were offered American citizenship as part of the treaty by both sides of the war. However, although Mexican Americans became citizens, they were poorly treated and did not receive equal rights. In the small town of Edna, Texas, Pedro Hernandez found himself in a murder case, in which he was charged for killing his employer. This would later lead to a landmark case, which would change the landscape of how minorities were treated. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Native Americans: A Short Story It was a slightly groggy day outside in the Autumn environment of November in Plymouth Village Massachusetts, European leader Caleb Johnson set ashore to gather up his large group of European soldiers. "Alright men, let's line up" Ordered Caleb as the soldiers organized themselves and lined up properly. Today was November 15th, the Europeans first espied several unknown people in the distance with a dog, they most definitely could not tell who it was. "Sir is that our master, Master Jones?" formally questioned one of the Europeans. • 11. Native American Stories Of The American Indian Stories By... Throughout much of the history of Native Americans we can see a pattern of times of intense hardship and adversity in many different forms. Likewise we can see hardship in the various Native American stories of Zitkala sa, Momaday, Alexie, and Silko. However adversity and hardship are not necessarily crippling or damning, in fact in this paper we will see how the various problems faced by these native americans, be it the fictional characters in the stories themselves or the authors of the story 's actually empowered them and often times made them stronger people as a whole be it as leaders of their community or simply people to look up too. After deciding to stay at the school, zitkala sa picks up competitive speech she is meet with further adversity when during one of her competitions she is met with a racist and bigoted crowd that unrelentingly harass her. However again we can see a admirable mental fortitude as instead of backing down from the adversity she instead faces it head on and goes on to not only participate in but win the competition. However the final and perhaps greatest example of Zitkala sa 's growth comes from after the story has ended and we look at her life. • 13. Haitian-American Author of a Collection of Short Stories... Edwidge Danticat, a Haitian–American writer, immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve from a Haiti that was filled with violent turmoil where she lived with relatives in a poverty–stricken area of Haiti. She soon learned English in the United States and began to develop as a young writer. Unlike most fictional writers, Danticat wrote her literature about the pain and suffering of her country from her own experiences. "She often says that her voice is the only one of many representing the Haitian people"(eportfolio). Her collection of fictional short stories Krik? Krak! depicted the lives of Haitians at different points throughout the twentieth–century(Chen 36). "A Wall of Fire Rising" is one of the short stories in the cycle in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Little Guy recites this speech: "A wall of fire is rising and in the ashes, I see the bones of my people. Not only those people whose dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls who have gone ahead to haunt my dreams. At night I relive once more the last caresses from the hand of a loving father, a valiant love, a beloved friend" (a wall 319). The speech reveals the symbolic meaning of the title and its symbolic attachment to Haitian revolutionary history as a picture of rising fire is painted when Boukman's powerful words come out of Little Guy's mouth. The theme of entrapment is starting to be revealed from the speech. The lives lost in the revolution, those that did not get to see freedom, resonate through the paper and becomes a reality. The slaves that died in the effort to revolution will be forever trapped in a life of slavery. Furthermore, "The image of a rising 'wall of fire,' conveyed by the story's title, historically refers to the dramatic sight of insurrection in 1791 after the Bois Caïman ceremony" (Chen 7). The Bois Caïman ceremony was a meeting led by Dutty Boukman in which slaves met in order to revolt againt the white planters. This would mark the beginning of the Haitian Revolution. Within days the Northern Plain was up in flames as the slaves burned and pillaged the land. "A Wall of Rising Fire" coincidentally was individually released exactly two centuries ... • 15. Narrative Of The Disappearing, Native American, By Thomas... In order to fully understand the first unit of American Studies I am going to orchestrate a class in which we explore the major themes and perform exercises to enhance the understanding of everyone in the class. This class will be titled, "Stories: Their Influence and Power." This class will focus on how stories have the abilities to change people's lives, and will especially focus on the context of stories in the lives of Native Americans. This class is extremely important because it will give students insight into not only Native stories, but into their own stories and how their lives have been impacted by them. This class will focus around excerpts from the book by Thomas King, The Truth About Stories, and circulate around two main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One simple story turned him into a star basketball player, one could also argue a psychopath as well, but we will stick to star basketball player. In order to explore this further I am going to have my students perform an activity. I am going to ask each student to think about a time in which someone made something up about them, and how that impacted their life. Or if they have ever made up a story about someone else and how they think that impacted the other person's life. We will then hold class discussion on how a single story, whether true or not, can change the portrayal of a person. The second story we will analyze in The Truth About Stories is going to be quintessential to this course and will inhabit a great deal of the time. We are going to look even deeper into the power of stories and turn it into something personal for the students. We will start by reading the story about Thomas and his son moving from Utah to Canada, which is located on page 99. This is a very short story but it packs a great deal of punch. Thomas is forced to move for a job, and inherently his nine–year old son has to come with him. They get caught in a big storm and the son ends up reminding his dad that the whole entire this was Thomas' idea. I am going to follow in Professor Richotte's lead and put a great deal of emphasis on the son, as he did in lecture. I will stress that this was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The show managed to rise above it and regain those lost viewers. As for the critics, well the industry is basically saying, "it's not that bad." The show is amazing for the audience except for one thing, and apparently it is Lady Gaga's acting skills. She is having anxiety issues regarding this and her doctor told her not to get off meds. The ratings of the show went up this week according to Headline Planet and most of the viewers gained back were from 18 to 49 years old. This is definitely some good news to the series' showrunner, Ryan Murphy. However, as mentioned earlier, might not be a good thing for singer now actress Lady Gaga. ... People in social media, specifically Twitter showed their sentiments on the subject. Some of the comments would certainly cause an artist to be depressed, but the pop star is strong enough and knows how to battle the issues. • 21. The Story Of American Slavery For the story of American slavery to be complete, it has to include the ills of the system, the changes created in the aftermath of emancipation and the precipitous slide down into the sins of segregation. Many books about slavery and the brutality of the life that so many people had to endure have been written over the years. In this book, David Blight tells the story about two men, John M. Washington (1838–1918) and Wallace Turnage (1846–1916) and their escape from slavery during the Civil War. Their escape to freedom occurred during the chaos of this nation's most bloody war and amidst a political and cultural conflict, which had been ripping the country apart for many decades. Throughout the Civil War, in thousands of different circumstances, under changing policies and redefinitions of their status, and in the face of social chaos caused by huge military campaigns and destruction, four million slaves helped to decide what time it would be in American History (Blight, 2007, p. 5). Whether it was freedom from a master or overseer, freedom from living as both property and the object of another person's will, or even freedom to make their own decisions and control their own life, slaves wanted a sense of independence. According to Blight (2007), "The war and the presence of Union armies and navies opened pathways to freedom for them, as it did many slaves" (p. 6). • 23. The American Experience In Alice Walker's Short Story... Alice Walker's short story "Strong Horse Tea" has many examples that make it unique to the American Experience. Some things from the story that make it relatable to the American Experience is racism, the advirtisment, and the determination that the characters have. Racism has been a big deal in America for a long time and is still relevant today. Another example that makes this short story unique to the American Experience is determination. Rannie is determined to get her infant son, Snooks, the proper care and medicine to get rid of the double pneumonia he is suffering from and she won't give up on trying to get her son to feel better. Lastly, advertisement is another thing from the story that relates it to the American Experience. Edge, in his book Fried Chicken: An American Story, discusses an anecdote from Dick Gregory's memoir, one which relays the relationship between food and violence. Gregory writes of an incident that occurred while he was dining at a restaurant. His white waitress initially refused to serve him and told him that the restaurant did not "serve colored people," to which Gregory jokingly responded that he "did not eat colored people" (Edge 6). Eventually, Gregory orders and receives a fried chicken. However, a group of Klansmen interrupts his meal. They threaten him by saying, "Anything you do to that chicken, we're gonna do to you" (Edge 6). This passage encapsulates many of the themes I discuss in this paper. Here, the Klansman relegate Gregory to a position analogous to food when they say that they will carry out any actions that he performs on the bird on him. ... This example is not perfect however, as it does not fully engage with the sexual and social components of consumption, two major facets of my discussion. However, through continued close reading and by putting Gayl Jones' Corregidora into conversation with critics such as Vincent Woodard, Psyche Williams–Forson, and Kyla Tompkins, among others, I strive to reveal the relationship between black women and food. More specifically, I seek to examine not only the ways in which the language of consumption represents sexual violence against the women in Corregidora, but also the ways in which women reclaim autonomy and selfhood through consumption of men and food alike, as well as the production of ... • 27. The Characteristics Of African-American Culture In Toni... Throughout history, authors have played an important role in conveying messages and ideas to the public. However, it the importance of an author's writings goes beyond what he/she writes, and extends to how a story is written. One author we can look to as an example of the importance of writing characteristics is Toni Morrison. Through her use of unique central themes, specific techniques, and stylistic elements, she made her own footprint on African–American literature. These various elements allowed Toni Morrison to make her stories unique to her, while presenting the African–American community in a new light and delivering Black literature to new audiences across the country. Morrison's stories tended to place a special importance on African–American culture. It was one of the facets of her stories that remained constant throughout all her writings. While the setting and time of her stories vary, it seems as though Black culture never truly changes in them. This shows importance, lasting value, and the ability of culture to be passed down. Oftentimes, African–American culture serves as a guiding point in a seemingly morally lopsided world. However, though cultural traditions are passed down through the generations, cultural flaws are also inherited. One pattern of flaws in African–American culture that Morrison acknowledges is shown in the propensity to overvalue material goods and undervalue nature, while falling for systems that abuse them. For instance, in Tar Baby, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Short Stories In Native American Literature Native American literature is in its self a very unique way of telling stories. In these types of stories, I found that the stories were much different than the stories of the northern American writers I was used too. What I found was the most interesting about the native American writers that I was reading about is how similar the short stories and poems seemed. Erna Gunther, the author of the Native American Literature article stated, "These include ancient hieroglyphic and pictographic writings of Middle America as well as an extensive set of folktales, myths, and oral histories that were transmitted for centuries by storytellers and that live on in the language works of many contemporary American Indian writers" (Gunther). There was a very clear idea that the native American writes were more alike in the themes and ideas that they were writing about. It is not a surprise when I read and come across writers who have very different ways in telling a story or poem. But what seemed to interest me when reading the work of two different Native American writers is how similar they are and not as different as one would imagine. The different prospective of writers are their true identities as a writer so it is amazing to see when some writers can see through the same lens. When researching Native American writers, I came across two writers, both women, with a similar back ground and also a very similar was of showing amazing imagery when telling the stories. Today was the first day of school. She wonders what it will be like. She is going to an all new school. It is an African American school obviously. It's the year of 1955, another school year ready to be begun. She is black, so she isn't allowed to go to all white schools. She is obviously an African American. You can easily tell by the chestnut skin, the hazel eyes, and her black braided hair. She is wearing a pink, short–sleeved shirt, (with flowers she sewed on herself), and a nice jean skirt. Margret didn't see the rock that was there (it was a pretty big rock) and tripped over it. In the position she was in, her ankle didn't look to good. It was twisted inwards. When she tried to get up, she fell back down. Emily ran up to Margret. Margret looked up. A mean scowl slowly formed on her face. "Go ahead. You win. Big whoop." She said, clenching her teeth, but underneath that face, Emily knew, was a nice lonely girl, crying for help. Emily took a big breath. She ran forward.........and put her arm out. Margret looked up in confused. But she grabbed it anyways. She let go of her hand, and tried to hobble, but ended up falling again. Emily held out her hand again. "Hold on to my hand." She said. American Horror Story and the Amazing World of Gumball Compared Ryan Murphy's anthology American Horror Story shows a side of evil and darkness that none of us could ever imagine. Ben Bocquelet's animated TV show The Amazing World of Gumball represents that unordinary, innocent part of ourselves that we often forget about. In this paper, I will be comparing the similarities and the differences of the two, drastically different shows. American Horror Story (AHS) has a malevolent, dystopian view on the environment and those in it, while The Amazing World of Gumball (Gumball) tries to pull off a more welcoming, friendly stance. AHS tends to focus more on the negatives and the evil in the world like murder, illegal drugs, alcohol, lying, manipulation, and abuse. The show's story can be written in some of the bluntest ways as possible. There is no beating around the bush or hiding under the blanket. Gumball gives a display of happiness and a fantasy of what our childhoods could be like. The joy and fun of being a child is shown in a way that younger kids tend to overlook. The view of the show normally comes off as "fun, innocent humor." AHS's way of presentation is meant to give off an antiutopian type of reality to appeal to those who enjoy or find interest in the twisted side of life. Gumball is animated the way it is to have a stronger appeal to children and give off that vibe of utopia and being carefree. AHS's characters' contain those dark, gloomy characteristics that ... • 63. The Jazz Singer : A Jewish American Story Essay At its core, The Jazz Singer is ostensibly a Jewish–American story. The central conflict is Jakie Rabinowitz's heritage, family, and upbringing coming to a head with his chosen career and where his heart lies: performance in an American pop cultural milieu. A reading of the film suggests that although hybridity can be found between the old and the new; the traditional and the modern; they are fundamentally in conflict with each other and cannot co–exist in their established forms: one must supersede the other. Cantor Rabinowitz is introduced with an intertitle description of his religious role in the synagogue, saying that he "stubbornly held to the ancient traditions of his race". The adult Jakie Rabinowitz, by contrast, is introduced eating ham and eggs in a café before performing two numbers in the genre forbidden to him by his father as it debases "the voice God gave him." He has changed his name – like Al Jolson, originally born Asa Yoelson – to Jack Robin, as he announces to his parents in a letter, who show concern over his choice of partner: his father thinks she may be (which indeed she is) a shiksa, while his mother emphasises that a non–ethnic name is not indicative of heritage (or lack thereof) in the "theayter." Gilbert Eastman stated that A–Z and numerical stories were most likely created as early as the 1900's at the Ohio School for the Deaf (Bauman). Although, there rules that apply to both forms of storytelling. The first rule is that the story incorporates paralinguistic mechanisms such as pausing, space, etc. (Bauman). The second rule is that the story flows naturally, and clearly makes sense. It is not allowed that a storyteller has a story that is choppy or jumpy to the point that the viewer does not understand. One of the most important rules is that the storyteller succeeds in continuing the story in alphabetical, or numerical, order. Similarly, if one tells the story in the reverse order, one cannot skip a letter, or number (Bauman). Lastly, for alphabetical stories there are allowable deviations and those that are not allowed. For example, many storytellers interchange "2" hand shapes such as "N," "H," "U," and "V." This deviation, along with the interchange of the "3" hand shapes "M" and "W," are allowable deviations (Bauman). However, the usage of the "time out" sign as "T" in A–Z stories is an example of a deviation that is not allowed (Bauman). These vital rules to alphabetical and numerical storytelling aid in contributing to the overall purpose. A–Z and numerical stories have multiple purposes, however, the main purpose is that of a source of entertainment (American Sign Language Literature). Similar to our American Sign Language class, classes throughout the world are assigned to create or research A–Z and numerical stories for school assignments. Although, they are enjoyable and a ... • 67. Shirley Crisholm 's Story : An African American Woman Shirley Crisholm's story takes place in the early 1900's in America. She had to endure life constantly being categorized and labeled against her true qualities. The society of her time did not see women as they did men, nor was there acknowledgement to the adequacy of any person outside of being born White. During this time, the white male was held at the top of the food chain. White females reigning second, black males third, and black women at the very bottom of the barrel. From birth, she was only seen as a black female and would have to work harder than the average American man, and probably white woman, to be recognized for her merit. Being an African–American woman, Shirley's chances of success and notoriety were slim to none. However, Shirley Crisholm did not believe in the systematic prejudice that was being thrown at the Black community or towards herself. Shirley knew she was more than just the labels placed beside her name. She wanted to make change in America and open the eyes and minds of everyone around her. The knowledge of her potential was seeded into Shirley's mind from a young age. Though born in America, she spent her youth growing up in Barbados. Within living there, her community consisted of black men and women living and prospering in the same ways their white counterparts did in America. She grew up knowing and experiencing people of color being just as capable of duty and work as any other race would. Her proficiency gave her the determination and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Native Americans: A Short Story Returning from my daily hunt, I walk to my village and pass my fellow people. Everyone is smiling and laughing intently listening to the elders tell stories to the young ones. The men are skinning animals to use for clothes and new homes meanwhile, the women are harvesting food. Everything around me seems so serene, unfortunately, this did not last. A group of pale men coming out of several ships approach us my first initial thought was that they looked like Gods but smelled like pigs. The smell was revolting. I assumed they were in those ships for an extensive amount of time. The men were wearing odd garments unlike anything I have ever seen before. I was extremely confused as to why these people were here. I did not know what the intentions of the white men were. Were they here as refugees or did they intend to cause us harm? ... • 73. American History X : The Story Of Two Brothers American History X "They (African Americans) are a burden to the advancement of the white race," a comment that is said by a Danny Vinyard, perfectly demonstrates the racist attitudes, which result in violence, that are shown throughout American History X. The movie tells the story of two brothers, Derek and Danny Vinyard, who become victims of their surroundings and a product of the people they emulate. Derek, Danny's older brother, is at first portrayed as the leader of the Skinheads, a neo–Nazi, Venice Beach gang filled with hatred towards any non–white groups especially African Americans. This hatred is intensified by the need to be superior, but in order to accomplish this, another group must be deemed inferior, and therefore oppressed, in this case African Americans. At the beginning of the movie, Derek is sent to prison for manslaughter, leaving his little brother to be alone and fall deeper into a hole of hatred and the beliefs of the gang. On the other hand, Derek experiences a series of events while in prison that lead him to a drastic transformation. Through Derek's transformative journey, the movie depicts that even though hatred is a source of violence and exclusion, the anger brought about from hatred can lead to a positive personal development. American History X shows how Derek's persona is a product of the people he emulates. We first see this when Derek's dad is surprised by how he enthusiastically speaks about his African American English teacher, calling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. American Indian Stories Sparknotes In her book American Indian Stories, Zitkala–Sa's central role as both an activist and writer surfaces, which uniquely combines autobiography and fiction and represents an attempt to merge cultural critique with aesthetic form, especially surrounding such fundamental matters as religion. In the tradition of sentimental, autobiographical fiction, this work addresses keen issues for American Indians' dilemmas with assimilation. In Parts IV and V of "School Days," for example, she vividly describes a little girl's nightmares of paleface devils and delineates her bitterness when her classmate died with an open Bible on her bed. In this groundbreaking scene, she inverts the allegation of Indian religion as superstition by labeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While she and her husband denounced the Peyote religion due to their first–hand observation of peyote's destructive––often deadly––effects, they asserted the superiority of Indian spirituality over the disregard for nature, disrespect of other cultures, and depredation of people which accompanied alleged Christian practices such as stripping children from their language, culture, religion, family, and environment, the blatant injustice and trauma of which the reader poignantly feels in her fiction during the hair–cutting scene and in the mother's desperate cry to her departed warrior brothers. This collection of stories and the autobiographical account of her school days at White's Manual Institute in Wabash, Indiana, and later at Earlham College provide insight into the struggle of Indian peoples in the early twentieth century to protect their heritage while developing a modern Indian identity. Zitkala–Sa makes the reader feel how shocking and horrifying our comfortable culture was to children who grew up in a different culture, beginning with the cutting of her hair. There are the "loud, metallic voice" of the bell and the "annoying clatter of shoes on bare floors." There is always a "clash of harsh noises" but mostly there is the "murmuring of an ... • 77. Native American Creation Stories Summary What is a reasonable explanation for the purpose of the Native American Creation Stories? Explain the obvious differences in the effects of the creation stories being delivered in the traditional oral tradition as opposed to being read as one written narrative. Think about what happens when stories are told orally and as a "people" instead of from a single author's point of view. How reliable are the narratives as translations of oral tales? What is a reasonable explanation for the purpose of the Native American Creation Stories? For this problem, our first and most obvious explanation is that the Native American Creation Stories allowed for history to easily be passed through oral traditions, as they had no print tradition (See page 7). ... This meant that hospitality was a particularly strong value. Another key to understanding this odd dynamic is that according to Howard Zinn's a People's History of the United States, property and land ownership were somewhat foreign concepts, so even invasion was not particularly contemptible for a number of tribes (Do take note, more agriculturally oriented tribes may have had different views than gatherer tribes). 3.
