The document discusses research conducted for a short film about knife crime awareness. It analyzes existing films and posters with similar themes to identify common features. Interviews were also conducted and analyzed to understand the target audience. Research showed the audience is primarily male ages 15-18 who believe knife crime is a serious issue influenced by social media. The short film will include realistic portrayals of knife crime to educate this demographic on the dangers and consequences of knife violence.
2. Existing Product
This product is similar to my own product because this is
the short film that inspired me to make my knife crime
awareness video, this screenshot from the short film
shows how dangerous it is to carry a knife or any sharp
object and have it be used as a weapon.
The angle of this scene shows a man attacking another
man by stabbing and kicking him on the ground with a
group of other teenagers surrounding him and
encouraging the man. The costumes that the actors are
wearing are all black and this makes it even more
disturbing when they are out in the dark. The props used
in this scene are fake blood and a fake knife, these features
are similar to what my short film includes.
The pace of this scene is very suspenseful, at the beginning
of the scene we see Amani run away from the group of
boys but they later catch up with him to attack him, at this
point in the scene we see flashing white images as the man
attacks Amani, this gives the audience the sense of shock
on what is happening, the white flashing images appear
each time amani is getting hit and stabbed. The lighting in
this clip Is really dark and dim, this makes the scene create
a sense of fear for the audience.
3. Existing Product
This product is similar to my poster because this
poster is dark and sinister like how I wanted mine to
be, it is set in a dark tunnel with a body on the floor
after a potential altercation has occurred between
him and the dark figure you can see walking into the
far distance. This is similar to my poster because I
also wanted mine to frightening and disturbing, I
want it to look real and have some sort of demonic
vibe to it. This is because my movie focuses on knife
crime and so does this movie that this existing poster
is based on, I feel like it’s a good project to use for
inspiration. The colours in this poster are very dark
and dim. This poster makes the audience want to
watch this movie because all they know about it is
that the man on the floor has had a incident with the
dark figure, this makes viewers want to know more.
The angle is looking straight throught the tunnel, the
lighting starts off dark then in the far distance it gets
brighter.
4. Existing Product
This product is similar to my own because this is the same
sort of story I am going for, this scene ends with a teenager
who carries his own knife and ends up getting stabbed by
the weapon that is in his hand, this is the climax of my short
film.
The location that this is filmed in is a quiet part of the town,
the costumes the two characters are wearing are very
popular with people in my targeted age group. This appeals
to the audience because of the tension build up. you don’t
know what is going to happen next when he pulls out the
knife, he could threaten him, stab him or even end up
getting stabbed himself when the other boy tries to defend
himself against the knife. The pace of this scene is very
dramatic, the scene starts with a heated argument about a
problem the two boys have had, the scene then moves to
the teenager pulling a knife out and threatening to kill the
other teen. The ighting in this scene is very bright, this is
good for this scene because you are able to see the
characters more clearly. The target audience for this short
film is males ages 16-25, especially who can relate to the
two characters
5. Existing Product
This product is similar to my poster because this poster is
also dark and haunting, it shows two people on different
sides of the knife, it makes it look like one of these people
has tried to use the weapon on the other person. This is
what I want mine to seem like. This is also similar to my
poster because I also wanted mine to look chilling and
nerve-racking, I want it to look terrorising and to have a dark
mood set to it. This is because my movie focuses on knife
crime and I feel like this is a good poster to use for ideas and
brainstorming. The colours in this poster are very dark and
bright at the same time. There is a mix between light and
dark colours such as red blue and black. This poster makes
the audience want to watch this film because all they know
about it is that it focuses on a man and a woman who
potentially have a deadly interaction with a knife. The
lighting in this poster is a mixture between dark and light, at
the top of the knife it looks very dark and on the bottom of
the knife it has gotten lighter, this could represent good and
bad in this movie. The audience that this movie would
appeal to it possibly male and females ages 20-25
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– The common features that my researched products have is that they all have a
connection to knives, this is important since my video focuses on knifes and
the problems they bring. They also have similar colour styles, dark mixed with
bright. They have a meaning behind the products, to show people that
carrying a sharp object as a weapon with or without intent to use against
another person is a bad choice and will affect you and other members in
drastic ways. Another common feature that my researched products have is
the editing styles, this kind of editing style is really similar to mine and I knew I

a messy font style and have it look improper. The special effects will be my
most used aspect, I will show good visuals when filming and have stabilized
camera shots, I will also a good range of sound and audio effects.

country. It is usually in city's with rough areas where people struggle to earn money,
this can cause violence by robbery's and fighting for money
• Do you agree that knife crime has been influenced by social media.
Yes I believe it is a cause of knife crime. Knife crime is becoming a trend among young

21. Interview 2
• Do you agree that knife crime is a serious subject to be concerned about.
Yes especially when it comes to young gangs in large cities like London. Furthermore, this is both
destructive and dangerous to the youth because it causes a chain reaction because when one
person carries a knife then more and more people want to carry. This is both because of
protection and within a smaller majority it is for usage and to try and because the most “elite”
gang member within your ends.
• Do you agree that knife crime is affecting the country.
Yes, especially the city areas because it is causing a lot of tension and danger in the cities thus
affecting them and the communities within them. Also it is causing great grief because of the
mass injuries and the tragic deaths.
• Do you agree that knife crime has been influenced by social media.
Social media isn’t always the main influence and motivation for knife crime, however, it has
certainly played a part in motivating them, because a lot of these people who will use a knife will
brag about it of social medias, such as Instagram and most commonly Snapchat. In conclusion, I
do agree that social media has played a significant part in influencing knife crime.
22. Interview 2
• Observation:
My observation on this interview is that they think a small minority of people carry knives
to show off, act tough and scare people. Whereas most people use knives for protection,

social media plays a big part in influencing people to carry knives.

What this shows about my audience is that they know the statistics of the different areas of

25. Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
The strengths of my product research are that i was able to find out facts about knife crime and educate myself on the
topic and learn new things I was not aware of.
The weaknesses of my product research was that the one thing I really found out was statistics about knife crime, this was
good but I wish I learned about peoples experiences with knifes more because then I can make my film relatable to their
own experiences.
– Questionnaires
The strengths of my questionnaires are that I get to ask my audience questions and see their responses on how they feel
about the things I ask them.
The weaknesses of my questionnaires are that some people might not agree with what I am saying and then ill need to
create a new question to ask them, finding the right questions is hard because not everyone will agree.
– Interviews
The strengths of my interviews are that I get to personally find out how my audience feel about knife crime, find out their
opinions and what they think triggers someone to go that far with a knife.
The weaknesses of my interviews are that they both have similar views on the epidemic, It would have been good for both
to have separate and different opinions so I could compare them both.
26. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
The responses that I got from my survey were very helpful responses to my
questions that helped me create my product because I got to understand how
people felt about knife crime and I knew what to include in my short film without
making it offensive or insensitive towards people that could have been affects by
knives.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
I distributed my survey via survey monkey where I collected data to pander my
target audience, thus being able to enjoy it more because they like the specific
features that will be included within the products. A disadvantage to this would
be that it is quite a time consuming task to complete, this is because of all the
questions I needed to merge together to create this suvey.
