It was all recorded in the
same place and the camera
just followed
Cuts were made by the
camera passing an object
They used natural light as
the main source of light so
that they didn't have to
hide lights because the
camera was moving so
much
They could only film at
certain times of the day
They used fields in the
countryside for the
location because that’s
where the war would have
been fought
It's one of the most
realistic war films because
of all of the natural lighting
and the real locations and
the camera is always with
the main character, so it
makes the audience feel
like they're actually there
with them.
The lighting tone is dark to
add to the sad theme of
the film
Existing Product
The colour grading of the
film is a very dark blue but
the lighting is very white,
this gives the film a dark
feeling but at the same
time the white lighting
makes the film have an
unsettling undertone of a
mental asylum and gives
the idea of insanity
The different costumes the
main character weares
everytime that he switches
his personality visiby shows
how different he is each
time and that hes not the
same person and how
much a lack of control he
has of himself, this may
show the viewer how
scarier this mental illness
can be as you could do
anything at any point
because you have been
taken over by somebody
else
The audience appeal of
this film is that it is like no
other, it explores a mental
illness people may be
curious about and shows
how much it can affect a
person. It also is a film in a
trilogy of films so they may
want to find out what
The camera angles slightly
change when somebody
new takes over the main
character. For exmaple
when the child comes out
the camera angles are
lower down and so it the
way hes positioned to
show how powerless he is
Existing Product
The colour grading has a
strong yellow tint to it. This
can show to the auience
sub countiously when the
charactors are feeling the
effects of the house they
are in because whenever
they are in the house or
something creepy related
to the house happens
there is a yellow tint but
when the go into the real
world, for exmaple a
doctor's office, the tint
turns to a calmer blue.
a lot of the camera angles
are horizontal and, on an
angle, to give a sense of
confusion and uneasiness
to the viewer. It makes it
harder to understand what
is really going on in the
show so you ffeel as
confused and disorientated
as the charactors in the
show
The lighting of the show is
very dark to make the
scenes creepier and to add
more suspence. This also
again adds to the confusion
of the viewer
The appeal of this show is
how uneasy it is to watch,
there isn't many other
shows which are filmed in
the way ths show is. It's a
very unique experience.
Existing Product
Doctor who heavily relies
on postproduction, a lot of
the filming sets are green
screened and a lot of the
things going on are special
effecs. This is going to be
different to my prjeect as I
am not going to have
access to these things.
However I amg going to
find alternatives that give
the same creepy effects
that doctor who can do by
using sound effects and
everyday objects.
The colour grading that
doctor who used is very
light but also blue themed.
This is because doctor
who's overall theme is
blue. I want to have a
similar colour grading to
doctor who as I think that
it looks professional but
also don't come across as a
horror film, which is what I
want my short film to come
across as
The costumes and scenes
are very different from
scene to scene in doctor
who. This is because the
show is about travelling
and seeing different things.
This is a big appeal for the
audience as there is
something different every
week for them to see
The music in the show fits
the different scenes very
well. I want my music style
to be very similar to doctor
who's because it really
adds a lot of emotion to a
Research Analysis
• All the different things that I have researched have dark colour
grading. They also have unique ways of making the viewer get
emotionally attatched to the charactors. They are also really good
at making the viewer feel emersed and making them feel like they
are in the position of the charactors in the show.
• I am going to have my colour grading very blue and slightly dark. I
am also going to put a lot of thought into my music choice and have
something off setting at times. I am also going to use very confusing
and disorientating camera angles and try and use as few cameras as
possible to make the viewer feel like they are in the role of the main
charactor too and they feel attatched to what they are watching.
Questionnaire Analysis
Audience research
• Observation: 75% of the survey were male
• What this says about my audience: my audience is
going to be mostly male
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
• It will be relatable for both male and female audiences
because there are still going to be a male and female
audience that both need to be able to relate to it.
Audience research
• Observation: everyone who did the survey was aged between 13-24
• What this says about my audience: all my audience is going to be teenagers and in
their early 20s.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: It will try and have the same
political ideas and views as this age range. It was also try and stay relevent to the
things that people do and use in this age range, such as smart phones and music.
Audience research
• Observation: 66.6% of the survey liked comedy's, 33.3% liked horror and 33.3% liked action
• What this says about my audience: most of my audience enjoy watching something funny over a
horror or action
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I am going to try and add some elements of comedy
within my short film, however horror is still going to be the main focus, I think that I should also add
in some aspects of lite action into my short film to try and appeal to my audience better.
Audience research
• Observation: More than half of the survey said that mental illness is something that is part of living but should be
viewed as important. The rest gave an answer that could be interpreted as them not being educated on mental
illness
• What this says about my audience: A lot of my audience sees mental illness as something that is a part of living
but something that is very important and should be addressed, the lesser half of my audience may not be too
educated on mental illness so they may not understand what it is or what it looks like.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product is going to try and make people feel disorientated ad
confused and hopefully it can give people more insight on what complex mental illness that people are born with
are like for people who live with them whilst at the same time be a thriller
Audience research
• Observation: most people had their own individual fears, but spiders and oceans were the most
common.
• What this says about my audience: They are all very different people with their own individual
fears but they a lot of the fears are common fears that people have.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I could implement some things that people feared
such as small rooms because more people are going to be scared of them too because they are a
common fear. I also now know what people aren't really scared of and what people are most scared
of on average than others.
Audience research
• Observation: 75% of the survey said that happiness what their favourite emotion, 12.5% said
excitement and 12.5% said pride
• What this says about my audience: my audience's favourite emotion is generally happiness and
positive emotions and that they are generally positive people.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I can use these emotions in my product to
manipulate how the viewer is feeling when they watch it. I can make the characters happy or make
something positive happen when I want them to feel positive or happy and use these against the
audience to make them feel sad
Audience research
• Observation: 75% of the survey said that music is just as important as the film itself and 25% said
that it's not.
• What this says about my audience: My audience think that music is very important to how a film
comes across and the music choice must be just as good as the film itself to engage the viewer
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product is going to use a lot of music and it is
going to be considered just as important as the film itself and a lot of time is going to go into
choosing the right type of music for each scene and how loud the music is at certain times to
impose certain types of emotion
Audience research
• Observation: peoples preferred time for a short form is anywhere from 4-30 minutes
• What this says about my audience: My audience prefers shorter lengthen short films on average
and after around 20 minutes half of my audience may begin to lose interest
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will have my final product be anywhere from 10-20
minutes, this is so that it's not too short for people and also so that people don't start to lose
internet because I have made it too long, this should be around the time frame that appeals to
most people.

and little dialogues and that are short
• What this says about my audience: They like
short films that are on the shorter end and they
are engaging for the videography and music
• How will your product appeal to this audience: It
won't have much dialogue and the music will be
very important; I am also not going to make the

important in short films?'
• Laurence: 'no'
• Me: 'do phycological thrillers scare you?'
• Laurence: 'mostly not'

Similar to Here are some key points from the interview:- The audience member prefers short films with little dialogue and that don't drag on. This suggests brevity and visual storytelling are important.- They see music as being just as important as the film itself. Careful music selection and use of score will be important for engagement. - Short run times of 10-15 minutes would likely appeal to this viewer. Longer films risk losing their interest. To appeal to this audience, your short film should:- Rely more on visuals and music than dialogue to tell the story- Maintain a brisk pace without dragging - Give significant attention to choosing an impactful musical score

Here are some key points from the interview:- The audience member prefers short films with little dialogue and that don't drag on.

  • 2. Existing Product 1917 It was all recorded in the same place and the camera just followed Cuts were made by the camera passing an object They used natural light as the main source of light so that they didn't have to hide lights because the camera was moving so much They could only film at certain times of the day They used fields in the countryside for the location because that’s where the war would have been fought It's one of the most realistic war films because of all of the natural lighting and the real locations and the camera is always with the main character, so it makes the audience feel like they're actually there with them. The lighting tone is dark to add to the sad theme of the film
  • 3. Existing Product The colour grading of the film is a very dark blue but the lighting is very white, this gives the film a dark feeling but at the same time the white lighting makes the film have an unsettling undertone of a mental asylum and gives the idea of insanity The different costumes the main character weares everytime that he switches his personality visiby shows how different he is each time and that hes not the same person and how much a lack of control he has of himself, this may show the viewer how scarier this mental illness can be as you could do anything at any point because you have been taken over by somebody else The audience appeal of this film is that it is like no other, it explores a mental illness people may be curious about and shows how much it can affect a person. It also is a film in a trilogy of films so they may want to find out what The camera angles slightly change when somebody new takes over the main character. For exmaple when the child comes out the camera angles are lower down and so it the way hes positioned to show how powerless he is
  • 4. Existing Product The colour grading has a strong yellow tint to it. This can show to the auience sub countiously when the charactors are feeling the effects of the house they are in because whenever they are in the house or something creepy related to the house happens there is a yellow tint but when the go into the real world, for exmaple a doctor's office, the tint turns to a calmer blue. a lot of the camera angles are horizontal and, on an angle, to give a sense of confusion and uneasiness to the viewer. It makes it harder to understand what is really going on in the show so you ffeel as confused and disorientated as the charactors in the show The lighting of the show is very dark to make the scenes creepier and to add more suspence. This also again adds to the confusion of the viewer The appeal of this show is how uneasy it is to watch, there isn't many other shows which are filmed in the way ths show is. It's a very unique experience.
  • 5. Existing Product Doctor who heavily relies on postproduction, a lot of the filming sets are green screened and a lot of the things going on are special effecs. This is going to be different to my prjeect as I am not going to have access to these things. However I amg going to find alternatives that give the same creepy effects that doctor who can do by using sound effects and everyday objects. The colour grading that doctor who used is very light but also blue themed. This is because doctor who's overall theme is blue. I want to have a similar colour grading to doctor who as I think that it looks professional but also don't come across as a horror film, which is what I want my short film to come across as The costumes and scenes are very different from scene to scene in doctor who. This is because the show is about travelling and seeing different things. This is a big appeal for the audience as there is something different every week for them to see The music in the show fits the different scenes very well. I want my music style to be very similar to doctor who's because it really adds a lot of emotion to a
  • 6. Research Analysis • All the different things that I have researched have dark colour grading. They also have unique ways of making the viewer get emotionally attatched to the charactors. They are also really good at making the viewer feel emersed and making them feel like they are in the position of the charactors in the show. • I am going to have my colour grading very blue and slightly dark. I am also going to put a lot of thought into my music choice and have something off setting at times. I am also going to use very confusing and disorientating camera angles and try and use as few cameras as possible to make the viewer feel like they are in the role of the main charactor too and they feel attatched to what they are watching.
