connotates death
and danger and
adds to the horror
genre.
Set in a forest
which is a
strong theme in
the horror
genre. Isolated
and alone in an
open space.
All the
character is
covered up so
we cannot see
his skin. This
again adds
more enigmas
to the shot.
It is a low angle shot to show
that the character has all the
power and could be dangerous.
This image appeals to
audiences as it is full of
enigmas and makes the
audience want to answer the
questions that they have.
3. Existing Product
Wearing a mask to
hide identity.
Makes the
audience want to
know why.
Gas mask
connotes death
due to poisonous
gasses and links
back to times
such as WW2 to
represent death
and destruction.
Red iconography suggests
blood and death; this
shows the genre of horror
to the audience.
Set in a busy city to show
the vast amount of people
involved and that could be
affected. Also shows that
even in a massive city no
one is safe.
Dressed as the statue
of liberty which
completely contrasts
the theme of the film
as it connotates justice
and peace.
Serif font to keep it simple
and professional. Shows
that there is a divide
between the government
and an opponent.

Masked killer. Creates
enigmas and curiosity
as to who is under the

whole body. Shows an
absence of information
and makes the audience
look for more and want
to find out more.
The knife is made to look
very big and sharp to
show that the central
character is a villain and a
big threat to everyone
else.
The central character is
made to look a lot bigger
than all thee other
characters on the poster.
This connotes that the
central character is to be
feared and the one with all
the power.
Secondary colour is a
gloomy light green that
connotates paranormal
activity and adds to the
horror genre.
Innocent women
pictures to show they
are isolated and in need
of help. Phone helps to
connotates danger
5. Existing Product
Red connotates death
and danger. Giving that
it is the secondary
colour of the poster
and on the clown
shows the genre and
that there is going to
be a lot of death and
different.
The characters hands
completely contrast the
clown characteristics. This
shows that the character
is alien and unknown
which shows that he is
unknown and dangerous.
‘IT’ is a pronoun and it
shows that the creature
doesn’t have any sort of
name and is a completely
unknown thing. This shows
that the character is very
dangerous as no one knows
what it is capable of.
The words are written
in red to again get the
genre across to the
audience as it
symbolises blood.
Scratches and chips on the
words to make the audience
think about how it could
have happened or who by. It
can also link to the clowns
big claws on his hands.
The clown is not the
central image which
contrasts most other
posters. This shows that
the film is completely
different and the
character is not normal
and dangerous.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products
have?
– They all have antagonists with masks on. Non of them
show their faces or facial features. All of them have
semiotics of death and danger within as well to show the
genre of horror.
• What aspects of the research will you include within
your own work?
– I liked how the clown in the IT poster was not the central
image because it creates a sense of abnormality and gives
the audience thoughts.
– I would also like to use the idea of masks and covering the
characters face to make the audience ask questions and
fear who is under the mask.
– Another aspect I would include in my product would be
the colour red to symbolise the genre of horror through
linking the colour red with blood.

SurveyMonkey provided me with a web link; I shared this to my tutor and I put it
