EVALUATION-QUESTION 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
• In my media I targeted a low/middle class audience as that’s the classes associated
with being urban. I used a model of a similar age to my audience so that my
audience can immediately associate with the model, I used both males and females
in my work but the main model was female so this would probably appeal to males
however it could appeal to both genders
FRONT COVER
• On my front cover I tried to attract both males and females, I did this by using a
photo of a female on the front cover. This would engage a females audience as they
would be able to associate themselves with that model. A female on the front cover
however would attract males according to Mulvey, a theorist, women on the front
cover were often sexualised. the text on the front cover makes reference to hip hop
artists and DJ’s these are predominately male music genres and would appeal to the
male audience. The mise en scene of the front cover was masculine as well by
having the model wear a sports top, however in urban culture its becoming popular
with girls to wear top like this therefore appeal to girls of an urban style.
LAYOUT
• I used a very simplistic layout so that my target audience could navigate as quickly
and easily as possible with doing minimal reading I decided to do it this way as my
target audience are stereotypically know as being lazy. I also used as little text and
more pictures as more text is usually associated with a more adult audience. This
may have made my production look less professional but my target audience would
mind this as they are stereotypically known for their uncared and unfinished views.
Rows and Columns also help my target audience navigate especially with sub
headings making it quick to see eye catching stories.
IDEOLOGY
• I have used reception theory in my final piece to establish a relationship between
model and reader through comparison and similarities included. This will entice the
reader to pick up my magazine and hopefully would inspire the reader potentially
creating a loyal fan base for my magazine. Also the use of similar aged models in
my magazine plays a key part in how the audience will perceive the magazine and
whether they can relate to it or not .
