Question 45
1. QUESTION 4/5
WHAT WOULD BE THE
AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT?
AND
HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS THE
AUDIENCE ?
2. TARGET AUDIENCE
I chose a target audience that is between…
• 17-25 year olds
• Both male and female
• Pop and chart music
I chose to make a charts magazine aimed at middle/working class , white British although I
am not trying to rule out a heterosexual audience by using a white British made is
representing that it is cool as the model is acting as a role model by doing this will attract
more of a mass audience. When creating my production I conferred with my target audience
many times through the focus group chat so that they could give me feedback on what they
would prefer to see in a music magazine as these people were all different ages but in the
age range it was very effective to make sure there was everything that people would prefer.
Due to using more male images than female this makes the magazine more appealing to the
male audience.
3. ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience for my music magazine consists of both males and females.
When creating my magazine I tried to make it appealing for both genders. However, as I
used black, red and white these colours are more gender specific colours aimed at men.
I used bold colours that are eye catching. A lot of music magazines I researched used red
white and black this is a house style theme this is what I was sticking too.
I found that by using a reception theory really enabled the audience to connect with the
artist on the magazine, by creating a personal relationship can possibly mean a loyal fan
base.
4. APPEALING TO AUDIENCE-EDITING
In my production I made sure that when I was
editing my production it was more appealing
to the target audience, I done this by cropping
the images to make them bigger and more
dominant this generates a better bond to the
audience and draws them in.
The editing, contrast and lighting of my
images gives the magazine a more lifelike, for
my front cover I edited the colours to make
the image stand out more on the page and
make it more eye catching and dramatic. Also
I made sure that the attention was on the
hand over the face as this is a key element in
the image and needs to pop, also makes the
magazine look interesting and mysterious.
5. APPEALING TO THE AUDIENCE- LANGUAGE
I chose to use some particular language in my production, for example on the front cover I used the quote
‘the only limit is you’ this is very mysterious also it is connected to the image is there are hands over the
artist face this could mean that she is holding him back etc.. I wanted there to be a mysterious feel to the
front cover of my magazine in order to draw the audience In. on the other pages I felt that it was as
important as that's where the audience find out the information Instead I used words like “featuring” to
make the reader interested in what else will be in the magazine this also will create an enigma and
tension for the reader to want to carry on reading.
I also chose some particular language on my double page spread to appeal to my target audience and
allow the correct form of register to come through. This meant using casual language that my target
audience can relate too and understand.
6. APPEALING TO THE AUDIENCE-LAYOUT
For the double page spread I used clear columns and
rows so it was easy to read, also most magazines that I
researched the double page spread was laid out in this
way this is very conventional as my contents page is
not for my contents page I shaped the text around the
image this is not sticking to conventional terms
however, I found this was more effective as it was
different and eye catching, the text was still labelled
with numbers and was clear to read I used headings in
order to show the reader what each page was based
around.
The placing of the word contents was also not at he top
of the page like most magazines that I researched I
found that by putting this word where I put it shown
below was more bold and effective I chose to write
contents like this after looking into vibe magazine.
7. APPEALING TO THE AUDIENCE- MISE-EN-
SCENE
I made sure that my production was
appealing to the target audience by the use of
clothing on the artist this is very similar to
what they would wear, this would make the
genre and type of magazine clear to my
target audience this will create a relationship
as they can connect to the model.
The background on my front cover is very
plain which allows the features to stand out
and pop to the audience, the background on
my double page spread is just grey however
there is two of the same image but one is
more faded this adds mystery and is different
and not a commonly used convention.
The clothing on the model in the double page
spread is more relaxed and less formal by the
model wearing trainers can help the audience
connect as this is similar to what they would
wear this type of clothing occasionally.
8. APPEALING TO AUDIENCE- IMAGE
I personally feel that the images I used
would appeal to my target audience
because all the images I used were
using direct mode of address this draws
the reader in and creates a relationship
between the audience and reader.( uses
& grats)
This is very clear on all of my images, on
my contents and double page spread
there is more body in the image and is
not so focused on the face this can show
the models body language as well which
my target audience can relate and
connect to.
I still chose to use direct mode of
address through all the pages as
repetition this will fulfil a wide range of
cognitive needs as well as inform the
reader what to expect inside.
Although I only used one image on my
front cover and contents I feel that this
made the pages different from a
