2. The both models which I have used for the cover,
content and double spread pages are female
teenagers/young adults. I have used young adults as
the focus of my magazine as that age group is my
magazines target audience, this is able to connect
the reader with the magazine, therefore uses and
gratification theory was used. Even though I have
only used females throughout the magazine I am
targeting it at both genders. This is though the layout
and content of the magazine as it is particularly a
pop/hip-hop magazine. The females are shown very
strong, confident and powerful through their body
language and facial expressions, therefore they are
the subjects of the magazine rather than the objects.
Also females will be attracted to this magazine as
there are females featured and males due to
attraction are more likely to purchase it as well. The
models used are shown to be upper class British by
their clothing, looks etc.
3. Front cover
A young female is presented on the cover. Her expressions show confidence
and success which is inspirational to my target audience. Her body language
(arms) are also showing that she is very comfortable within the environment
of media. She is wearing a plain simple white shirt, so the focus would be on
her face rather than her clothes, this also reflects the idea that the target
audience is able to look like her so a connection between the artist and
model would be created. Her facial expressions are very simple yet by direct
mode of address she is able to draw in an audience. on many of the covers of
existing music magazines have sexualised women by their clothes and body
language which I was against for as I wanted women to be represented as
strong successful individuals.
4. Images used- cover page
The image is a close up of the model, this would make the reader
feel as they really are very close to her which would make them feel
as there is a personal relationship between them. Also by using this I
wanted for the audience to see her facial expressions clearly.
I have used direct mode of address here which means that the
models are looking directly into the camera. Due to this the audience
is able to look at the image and feel as they are personally looking at
them which once again is creating a personal relationship, this is the
uses and gratifications theory. This also shows that she is a powerful
female and is the subject of the whole magazine. The way she is
smiling is rather sweet rather than sexualised and I did not intend
males to see her in that way as well as I wanted her to seem as a
good role model to females. Even though this magazine is aimed at
both genders I wanted males to be attracted to the magazine in
other ways rather than just sexually.
5. Images used- contents page
This was the only image of a model where I hadn’t used direct mode of address, I did this in order for
her to seem as she is looking at the contents of the magazine, not for her to seem to be objectified. She
is wearing a very plain basic white top which is seen to be the style by the stereotypical teenager/young
adult therefore the target audience is able to seem as they can relate to the model. This image is larger
than the others on the contents page to show the importance of that article.
The images mise-en-scene is of a graffiti wall. Which is associated with stereotypical teenagers/ young
adults. The model again in wearing plain simple clothes and using direct mode of address for the target
audience to relate to her as well as not being objectified. This image is mid-shot to be able to see the
mise-en-scene completely and make that the focus as well as the model herself
This image was taken at a festival, this is where stereotypical teenagers go to in the summer. Therefore
I’ve included this to create a bigger appeal to the magazine. This image features many people which are
at the age of the target audience this shows that festivals are a big part of stereotypical teenage life
6. Images used- double page spread
This image is a mid-shot, of the model. She is located
at the left hand side as I would be able to write the
article on the right.
As her being a young female I wanted her to look
confident though her body language and facial
expressions once again I have used direct mode of
address for the purpose of her looking as the subject
as well as strong independent character, this is what
the target audience could look up to or relate to her.
Her clothing is quite casual, a jumper jeans and a
leather jacket suggesting her being at the same age
as the target audience. Other parts of the mise-en-
scene was the brick wall which I believe enhanced
her look as well as throughout my research I found
out that many modelling shots have been near a
brick walls, which was also aimed at the same target
audience my magazine.
7. Layout
The layout is mainly picture based as for the target audience this may
seem much more appealing. It is clearly seen which are the main
articles as there are large and small photographs added in it. In each
feature there is a title which is the first thing the target audience would
took at this what would make each article more appealing rather than
being the same font and colour and the text just below it just gives
enough information for the reader to keep their attention on. The page
as a whole is very organised and does not seem to be all over the place.
The magazine which I’ve got most of the inspiration of this magazine
would be ‘Q’ as I believe it was very informative, easy to understand
and convenient for the reader.
8. Ideology
I believe that throughout the layouts and the images used I was able to relate
the target audience of 16-25, to the models which I have used throughout the
use of mise-en-scene, facial expressions and body language as there are very
important to convey messages though print. One of the most important
conventions which I’ve have used was the direct mode of address as it enabled
me to create a personal relationship between the readers and the artist. If
these are used regularly on covers of magazines they are able to create
narrative tension which is able to increase the amount of regular readers to the
magazine, this is done by magazine such as NME and Q.
