1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Evaluation Question 1
TV Listing
SHENAY kINYOK
2. Radio Times
Radio times is a weekly British TV and radio programme listings
magazine. It published its first magazine in 1923 so has been
around for a long time so is a well established company. When it
was first published it was only a BBC based magazine however now
the publication carries listings for all major cable and satellite TV
channels. We believed Radio times would be best suited to
advertise our documentary as there is a direct link between the
channel it will be published on; which is BBC Three. This is a direct
linkage and therefore radio times will share some of the same
target audience as BBC Three, so this is the magazine our target
audience are most likely to purchase
Radio Times’ is a highly rated magazine with a broad audience
which means it would be the best place to advertise our
documentary due to the mass amount of people who would be able
to view the article. As the magazine is solely focused on TV and
Radio listings it would be the perfect place for our topic to be
featured.
3. Pull-Quote is a section of the
article that has been pulled out. It
is done to attract and pull the
reader into the article. We have
used a Statistic to do this as we
thought it would work as a shock
factor to our audience which will
peak their interest
A Drop Cap
is nearly always used in
magazine articles at the
beginning of the text. It
shows the audience where
the text starts so that the
article is easy to follow
A different
Section/column
is often used in
magazines so
separate
information from
the rest of the
article. We have
used a thick
boarder to do this
and chose to
show who our
expert
interviewees are.
We made Emmas’
image the largest
as we felt as
though she would
appeal more to
our audience as
she is of a similar
age to them.
The
Masthead
is the headline/title of
the page, and is
always used in
magazines/newspaper
s. Magazine articles
for television articles
are sometimes
headlines based on
characters, puns
plotlines. Or simply
the title of the
documentary.
We decided not use
our documentary title
and instead chose to
have ‘The social media
Epidemic’ we felt as if
this made it sound
more urgent as an
epidemic is defined
as ‘a widespread
occurrence of an
infectious disease in a
community at a
particular time’
therefore we also
believed it was a
clever play on words
which would interest
our audience.
4. Page numbers
conventionally placed at
the bottom corner of each
page to make it easy for
the reader to navigate
around the magazine. We
found through research
that the odd number
always appears on the
right page, so this is a
convention we followed in
order to make it look like a
professional magazine
Stand First is used to provide the
reader with more information, It
gives the reader a clear sense of
what they will find out if they read
on. It therefore elaborates on the
headline while providing an
overview of what to expect form
the article.
A By-line is used to summaries important
facts such as the time and scheduling of the
show. We included the title of our
documentary the channel and timing clearly
at the beginning of the article so it was clear
for the reader to see. We also put two lines
above and under it to separate it from the
article and follow the typical convention.
Columns are conventionally used in
newspapers/Magazine articles as it makes the
text easier to follow. We consciously decided
not to make our article too long as we
believed it would bore our target audience as
they would b put off my too much writing,
therefore we only included the necessary
amount of information
5. Images: Magazine articles will conventionally have one main image followed by
several smaller images. For articles describing documentaries the images used are
often stills from the documentary, highlighting key points, so the audience know
what to expect. The main image used takes up the majority of the double page
spread and should intrigue the audience, this is why we chose our main image. The
use of the girls on their phone in class highlights obsession and how phones may be
a distraction which are key points covered in our documentary. It will also hopefully
grab the readers attention as they will be able to relate to the image as it may
reflect what they did or do during class.
Magazines always have their own individual
house style colours which makes the
magazine easily recognisable to its target
audience. Radio times uses the colours: Red,
White and yellow. Conventionally magazines
stick to their house style colours throughout
the magazine. So this is what we have done
by using the same colours as radio times. For
example we have used the colour red as sub
Headings for our pictures as well as using red
for our boarder and pull quote. This makes
the magazine more sophisticated as it links
everything together. The article is also
conventionally written in black text against a
white background so that it is clear and easy
to read for the audience.
Captions are always
used with images.
They are used to
explain what is
happening in a photo
or describe who that
person is. We have
followed the same
format with the
captions typically used
in radio times my
using the same colour
and arrows to indicate
which picture the text
is referring to.
