4. We first played the RadioTrailer to our focus group. After
they viewed/heard this we asked them a few questions. From
their answers, we mainly gained a negotiated reading (A
mixture of preferred and oppositional readings – Stuart
Hall’s ReceptionTheory) from them.
We learned that the RadioTrailer is the most different from
all 3 products in terms of them as a brand. We also learned
that they liked some of the elements of it such as sound
effects etc which helped them enjoy it.They also highlighted
about the topic, which effected their ratings of 6’s and 5 and
8. However, they did think that the background music was a
bit loud, and there was some inconsistency to the sound.
We learnt that this topic was relevant to them, and that it
focuses on the younger generation.
I personally did not expect them to say their comments about
the consistency of the sound as I thought it was quite
consistent. But comments on the sound effects I did expect.
6. We showed our magazine to our focus group after showing
the RadioTrailer. We mainly gained a Preferred reading
(The reading we expected from them – Positive reading).
They said that they liked the layout and the colours, which
made it look professional. These are the comments I was
expecting when it came to the responses. They also liked
the use of images and design.
Most of the people within the focus group thought that
there were no improvements to be made, except one who
thought that the writing had to be a bit bigger.
I was not expecting the comment about the increase of font
due to the fact that it was conventional to make it that size.
Mostly, the audience responded the way I expected to.
8. After the two ancillary products, we showed the focus group the
main product, which was the documentary. Again, we received a
Preferred Reading, which I was expecting.
All the members of the focus group stated that they would carry on
watching the documentary if it was extended. I was expecting a
maybe from the group when it came to this along with their reason
why and I received a yes instead of a maybe when it came to this
question. They said they would carry on watching it because it was
interesting.
They liked the flow of the documentary and how it was focused on
today’s generation. They also liked how it looked professional and
was ran smoothly. I personally thought this myself when I watched
the final cut, so I was expecting this as what people liked. They also
liked the range of views.
As improvements, they thought that the voiceovers and
voxpops/Interviews had to be consistent. I also thought this aswell
when it came to editing, and unfortunately couldn’t be changed. This
as an improvement was what I was expecting
10. The focus group agreed that all these products were aimed
at younger people, the audience we were targeting at.This
is because it featured people within the target audience’s
range.This was a preferred reading.
They thought that the documentary and magazine work
together well best, and that the radio trailer stands out a bit
when it came to the products working together well, ad
somehow could’ve been more connected to the other
products. This was a negotiated reading. I was expecting
this as their answer.
They stated that overall the products work together. This
again I did expect after seeing it myself.
They said that the topic of healthy eating is consistent
throughout. This I did expect as an answer.
11. Overall…
Overall, we mainly gained preferred readings
from our focus group when it came to our
products, which is what we were hoping for. I
was impressed with their responses.
I did expect some of the responses that they
were going to come out with also, since had
some of these responses too. I wasn’t really
surprised by any of their responses.
