Mais les limites de ces systèmes ont été atteintes. Des étudiants doivent s’endetter sur des décennies pour aller à l’université, le problème de l’illettrisme dans le monde n’est pas résolu, et de plus en plus de jeunes élèves ne croient plus en l’école. Il semble évident qu’à l’heure de la révolution numérique, l’école doit revoir sa mission et ses outils de formation. Cependant, aucun gouvernement n’ose remettre en cause ne serait-ce que l’architecture de l’école,  la séparation de la connaissance en différentes matières ou le classement des étudiants par âge. C'est sans compter l'audace des Barbares, qui n’attendent pas un décret pour innover et répondent à ces enjeux par les possibilités qu’offrent la révolution numérique. Ces individus attaquent l’éducation, dématérialisent la salle de classe, rendent accessible des savoirs à des millions d’étudiants: ils sont en train de redéfinir l’éducation du XXIe siècle.
