Bring it on 1st workshop
1. Bring it on
Focus: The focus for today’s workshop is to explore and perform in an urban/street style through learning repertoire from ‘bring it on’.
Therefore, my for the workshop is to learn repertoire and add characteristics of the style.
Warmup: At the start of the workshop we did a simple warm up to stretch out our bodies so we were able to complete the focus for the session.
In the warm up we did arm circles to warm up our shoulder joints. We also did so lateral stretchers and flat backs to stretch out our lateral
muscles and back muscles. The warm is important in any dance class or rehearsals because if not warmed up properly we can injure our self
through the movements we are doing in the routine.
In this image, I am taking part in the warm up that Miss Sweeney organised for us to participate in. I found the
warm easy because it was similar to all the warm ups I do at my out of school dance classes.
Bring It On: We watched the Tony Awards video of the repertoire we are learning. Bring it on choreography is in the
style of urban and hip-hop dancing. Hip-hop dance has elements of 1970s dancing which grew into the style we
have today. Hip-hop consists of lots of different elements, for example there is popping, locking, walking, vogueing,
breaking and many more. The bring it on choreography has elements of popping and locking. Popping is a quick
contraction followed by a quick release that causes the body to pop or hit. Whereas locking is a freezing from a fast movement and “locking” on
a certain position, holding it and then continuing at the same speed as before. In the choreography, we learnt there is a body ripple and chest
isolation, these are some classic urban movements.
In this image, I am dancing the duet section in the Bring It On choreography we learnt. This section was hard
to learn as we had to beware of our partner and the dancing we were doing. However, due to my dance
experience I found it easier than some of the other did because I have worked with a partner before.
Strengths: During the lesson, I establish that my strengths were picking up the choreography and trying to add
the urban/hip-hop dance style to the routine. I was able to add the urban/hip-hop style to the dance routine
because I have trained in hip-hop styled dancing previously. This will help me in the industry because if I am auditioning for a musical that had
urban or hip-hop styled choreography I would be able to attempt to do the choreography correctly.
2. Weakness: However my weakness was also making the urban/hip-hop style in the routine look good this was because of my classical training. To
improve I will keep practicing the routine to make my hip hop style better and improve my knowledge of the style. Also, I will film myself doing
the routine and the style, so I can watch for where I can improve
