Dance Photography
Why?
 I have chosen dance as my genre because I am a

dancer myself and it is a very passionate subject of
mine.
 Dance is about expression, emotions and in most

cases, telling a story.
Influences
 Gene Shiavone- Ballet Photographer

He attended his wife’s ballet rehearsals and was amazed by
the girls dancing on their toes (Pointe) and this influenced
him to capture the beauty.

He was later given permission to photograph the ballet
companies tours and productions and this enabled him to
develop his skill as a dance photographer.
Influences
 Paul Colwell- Dance photographer
Paul likes working with dancers because he tends to find they chase
perfection as obsessively as he does. He finds photographing dance as a
process of combining two art forms. Where dance is all about movement,
photography is fundamentally stillness.
When working with a dancer, he likes to watch them warm up and
practice routines. This gives him the chance to asses the best way to
capture particular moves.
Influences
 Looking at those artists’ images, have influenced me to

show how hard dance actually is through my images.
 Some people don't realise the amount of strength, stamina

and flexibility needed to be a dance

 I also want to have an abstract approach to my images, such

as taking pictures of dancers dancing on the street and
maybe of Pointe shoes hanging from a tree.
