1. LES MISERABLE WEEK 1 REHEARSAL
In the first week of rehearsal we learnt 5 songs. We did At the end of the day, Master
of the House, One day more, Look Down, and Do you hear the people sing? .
The first rehearsal we started by discussing what Les Miserable was about and then
went on to discuss the story in the first song we learnt. WE started with At the End
of the Day, during this song there is the poor people showing how there isn’t much
left for them, also they have the workers in the factory discussing there feels for how
the foramen is acting towards Fauntine. For this section I sing the chorus parts, which
is split into a higher and lower harmony's, I sang as part of the lower part of the
harmony as it suited my vocal range better. Then we moved on to learn Master of
the House. This was a complete change of character as for At the End of the Day we
are poor, sad and desperate, whereas in Master of the House the characters are more
up beat but still there is a dirtiness to there character. In Master of the House I sang
the chorus parts, this meant I was sign with the rest of the cast other than Madame
Thenardier and Thenardier. In this I sang the altos part as it was easier for my voice
to reach.
At our next rehearsal, we did ‘The Beggars’ and ‘One Day More’. We started the
rehearsal with ‘The Beggars’ this was split into 3 section of harmony’s. I was part of
the alto’s section which meant that it suited my voice again. We sang through this
several times and and made sure that at the end of each lyric line we finished the
word short and sharp to add the effect of use being poor and dirty people. Then we
moved on to ‘One Day More’ , this song is the showstopper for Les Miserable which
means that we need to make sure it is right and powerful. In ’One Day More’ there
isn’t many chorus section but the section that are they are complicated because
there is 4 harmony part. This meant that when we started to section the harmony’s
we had to change the part a bit. The top harmony was the girls that sang soprano,
then the next was the girls that sang alto. Then next harmony’s had to be split
between the boys some were basses and some were tenors. However, for the first bit
we sang we removed the tenors harmony because it was to hard for the boys to hit.
Then after that all the harmony's stayed the same. At the end we add a change in
key to the last note on the word ’more’. We raised up 2 keys on the word.
At our next rehearsal we did ’One Day More’ again and ‘The People’s song’. We rang
One Day More again to make sure we all still knew our harmonies and what sections
we were singing. Then we started work on ‘The People’s Song’, in this there isn’t
much chorus singing in this song. The end chorus is sung by everybody with the
same 3 harmonies. I sang the alto section as it suited my voice. The People’s song
wasn’t hard to learn because there wasn’t much singing as a chorus.
My strengths from these rehearsal were listening and picking up the harmonies that
was instructed.
My weakness from these rehearsal was being able to get the right key for my
singing. I sometimes found I was to sharp for the key being sung.
To improve: I will work with the teachers and with some of the other students to
