The document summarizes the process of developing and combining acting, singing, and dance skills for a production of Les Miserables. Auditions were held to cast actors with the necessary skills, and rehearsals focused on developing and integrating these skills. Through dedicated practice and responding well to director feedback, the performer was able to successfully combine their skills, especially in challenging scenes requiring both dancing and singing. Audience and tutor feedback following the performances was overwhelmingly positive, praising the high quality of the "professional and tight production."

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. THE PROCESS- DEVELOPMENT AND COMBINING SKILLS IN
ACTING, SINGING AND DANCE SKILLS IN LES MISERABLES
To begin the process auditions were held to find the right actor, singer and dancer for the roles.
These role were sorted based on all 3 skills needed in the musical. Then we moved through into
rehearsal which is where we developed and combined all of the skills. To begin the rehearsal
process my singing and acting was the same strength as my dancing but this was due to my
background of training in dance. During the rehearsal I listened to others and the tutors
comments to help develop my skills. In all of the rehearsal I practiced hard and made sure I was
doing everything the teachers told me to do to improve my skills. Once I had developed the skills
further, I started to combine the skills to make everything happen as one thing rather then bits of
everything happening at different times. This was mainly need in the Wedding scene and turning
because they had a high content of dance as well as singing and acting. During the rehearsal for
this section I struggled to started with because I wasn’t able to put all 3 skills together, but after I
worked hard and practiced the section in my own time I was able to confidently combined the
skills enough to make the section work and be easy for me to perform.
3. RESPONSE TO DIRECTION, CHOREOGRAPHY AND
MUSICAL DIRECTION
During rehearsals we were given lots of direction to respond to. This was a hugely influential on
the success of the performance. When responding to directions I had to be an respectful and try
and take on the direction quickly and maturely, because I was one of the older members of the
cast I was expected to be a role model to other cast members. The director, choreographer and
musical director gave us lots of direction, I was given independent directions from all three
directors.
My direction from the director was to work on how to I portrayed my characters because some
of the characterisation wasn’t correct for the time period. In response I worked on how the
characters would of acted in the time period of Les Miserables. To do this I researched the
characters of the performance and then I also researched people in the time period to improve
the character even more.
My direction from the choreographer was to work on how much energy was put into each
movement and how the movement would come across to the audience. To respond to this I
worked on the amount of energy need to show the right character and intention in the
movement.
My direction from the musical director was to work on projecting my voice when I came to my
solo section because unlike other I wasn’t able to have a microphone on. This meant I need to
work on getting my voice to reach the back of the theatre whilst keeping in the right note.
4. STRENGTHS DURING THE DEVELOPMENT
My strength during the rehearsal process was being able to remember the choreography and the
small details that the choreographer changed in each rehearsal. Also, I was good at being able to
lead other students through the choreographic moments. This meant that I was able to help
others to improve the choreography and make sure that all the other cast in he section had it
correctly.
TARGETS FOR IMPROVEMENT
To improve I will work on keeping my energy going throughout all of the rehearsal because of
the mental exhaustion. This made it hard to keep myself motivated during the rehearsal process.
This was something that the directors told the whole cast to work on because we all began to
lack in enthusiasm during the rehearsal process.
My personal target was to improve on my singing, because it wasn’t as strong as I want it to be
for the performance. I did this by using techniques I was told from the musical director and
singing coach to improve my singing .
5. REALISATION OF LES MISERABLES
Start to the Les Miserables rehearsal process I didn't think this performance was my type of
performance. As the rehearsal process went on realised that Les miserables might not have been
my first choice for a performance but I eventually fit into the performance. I found that I actually
suited the moments of the performance that involved movement and dance.
STRENGTHS IN COMBINING ART FORMS
My strengths at being able to combined the art forms was being able to remember easily what
choreography was happening whilst I thought about the singing that was happening. This meant
that during all of the performance I was able to concentrate on the singing element of each
sections rather than what movement or choreography I was supposed to be doing.
6. AUDIENCE AND TUTOR FEEDBACK
After all of the performance the audience were on there feet applauding. Also the audience
members gave some really great reviews after the show was finished. The feedback was all
positive and they were all saying how our version of Les Miserables was the best show the school
had done so far. One piece of feedback came from the CEO of Two Countries Trust saying that
the performance was “outstanding in all respects” and that was had a “professional and tight
production’. We had many people mention that the performance was “better the the West End”,
other feedback was saying how “ proud we should be of ourselves” and that ”all of the hard work
had paid off”. These were just a few piece of feedback and this made all the hard work to put this
performance together worth it. Overall the whole performance had a positive feedback.
