Bring it on dance second dance workshop
1. Bring It On second dance workshop
The focus intoday’sworkshop/rehearsalis write about, rehearse, refine andimprovethe
choreography,therefore,my targetforthisworkshop/rehearsalistoimprove mytimingand
rhythmicaccuracy to coincide mymovement withmypeers. Intoday’sworkshopwe wentthrough
our alreadypracticedchoreographyandtriedtorefine itandstylise itmore makingeachmovement
fitthe urban/hip-hopdance style.Myinitial strengthwasrememberingthe choreographyhoweverI
soonnoticedmyweakness, asourdance instructor(Mrs Parkin) toldusto sharpenour dance
movementstostylisethemmore,thismeantsharpeningmyarmswhenflaringthemoutand
poppingmychestout andin, I alsoneededtolockmylegsinparticularpositions duringthe routine.
Lockingis a streetmove tracedback to the 1960’s createdby Don Campbell, itrequiresthe
performertofreeze fromafast pacedmovement.We were requiredtosynchroniseourlocked
positionsinaparticularpart of the dance,I didn’t overlystruggle withthisasIalreadyknew the
positionsIwasdoingI justneededtoemphasisethemmore byhavingstraightarmsandstaying
frozenfora little bitlonger.It’spoppingIfounddifficult,poppingisdescribedtoperformerslike it’s
‘a force of energymovingthroughyourbodycausingitto move like awave’,youneedagoodsense
of rhythmto pull itoff howeverwhenwe startedtopopourarms duringthe piece where we flair
our arms leftandright.I struggledmanipulatingthatenergyintomymove whilstkeepingupwith
my peersmeaningIfell outof time tothe rest.Howeveraftersome practice Ibeganto keepup
whilstretainingthe poppingneededtoemphasisthe streetstyleof dance.
Here I am at the start of the
workshoptrying toimplement
‘popping’intomymoves.Asyoucan
see fromthe picture due to thisnew
additiontothe routine,Iam
completelyoutof time withmy
peers.
Now at the endof the workshopI
have completelykeptintime with
my peersandmanagedto
implementthe ‘popping’movement
to add that streetstyle flairtoit.
