What is classical
conditioning?
Classical Conditioning :
A learning process in which
an originally neutral stimulus
becomes associated with a
particular physiological or
emotional response.
Example:
Getting nervous when you see
the teacher holding out papers
for a pop quiz or exam.
Classical Conditioning is also
known as
1.Pavlovian Conditioning
2. Respondent Conditioning
 Study of Association

Terminology
Stimulus (STIM-yu-lus): Any
event or object in the environment
to which organism responds
plural is stimuli.
Reflex is an involuntary response to
a particular stimulus.
Reflexes are made up of both a
stimulus and a response.

Neutral Stimulus – does not
produces any particular

Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS) 
An event that consistently and
automatically elicits an
unconditioned response.
Classical Conditioning

Unconditioned Response (UCR) 
An action that the unconditioned
stimulus automatically elicits.
Classical Conditioning
Terminology
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)  Formerly
the neutral stimulus, having been paired
with the unconditioned stimulus, elicits
the same response. That response
depends upon its consistent pairing with
the UCR.
Classical Conditioning
Terminology
Conditioned Response (CR) 
The response elicited by the
conditioned stimulus due to the
training. Usually it closely
resembles the UCR.
