1. Evaluation
Areyour finished piecesfit for the intended product purpose?
My finished pieces are fit for the intended purpose. The intended purposes of my
products are that they to promote the campaign of surfers against sewage. I have
created a poster, logo, merchandise and membership form and the purpose is that
they are there to interact with the public with the campaign. The poster promotes
the campaign. The logo is representing the campaign. The merchandise is
supporting the campaign then the membership form is getting the public to
interact and get them involved with surfers against sewage. My products are all up
to a high standard and they all serve each purpose. I have studied already existing
products before creating my own and I highlighted the key elements that each one
had through mind maps and mood boards and I made sure that my products that I
created involved these elements. That’s what makes them fit for the purpose that
they were designed before. My products are up to the standard that the existing
products are. As I got inspiration from these and modeled my products off them
but then I made them original as I changed them to how I wanted. I created a new
campaign “life’s a beach not a bin” and this fitted in well with the campaign
because they regularly do beach cleans and try and stop litter getting on the beach.
So my campaign altogether is fit for the purpose as it links with what SAS tries and
does. So the products that I have created are fit for the purpose of the campaign
and the SAS.
Do they communicateyour message clearly?
My products that I have created do communicate my message clearly to the
audience. They do this by visually showing the contrast between a horrible dirty
beach and a clean beach. I showed this on my poster and decided to create this
poster design like this to clearly show the message. This was a strong way with the
poster that I could communicate the message clearly visually. It would have been
harder to do with the other products to visually show the message and
communicate it clearly. But the poster does it really well. On the poster I added the
caption ‘life’s a beach not a bin.’ Underneath this slogan I added a fact, which says
how much beach litter is found on the beach from the public. I used this to back up
the slogan and have evidence that the beaches are full of litter from the public. This
back up my slogan to create and communicate with my audience that my message
is a problem and using fugues shows this and uses numbers to communicate to the
audience which I think is very power when wanting to put over a message.
This is the campaign that I have surrounded my products around and this can be
found on the poster, the membership form and the merch. I believe that it is
important that this slogan is put on most of the products because it is repeated and
that is communicating with the audience and making a clear message. So that is
why I made sure this slogan was on the merch and the poster especially. Instead of
visually seeing the message I created the message through words so I could involve
it in my products. This is very clear and the audience can wear the message and use
the message on different products like mugs so it is definitely communicating the
message clearly as it has been used repeatingly throughout each product. I created
my products around communicating a message. My membership form does this
really strongly as it shows pictures of what the SAS achieve then it has the
information of what the SAS do and this is communicating the message to the
2. public about the charity/campaigns. Using bright colours and fun fonts that make
the public attracted to reading the membership form. This is communicating
clearly what I am putting out there and the message that I want them to know
through the design of the membership form, which is really effective as this is the
part with the most information about the SAS on. So overall I believe I have used a
lot of techniques to clearly communicate my message to the audience.
Arethey appropriatefor your target audience?
My products are definitely appropriate for the target audience. Before I started the
production I carefully looked at the audience to find out whom I would aiming my
products out. Through looking at existing SAS products and the type of charity that
is I concluded that the target audience is a large age range 17-60+ of people that
surf and are very interested in the beach and the beach environment.
Environmentalists. Male and females that are located near the beach. I don’t think
anyone younger than 17 understands the problem as such so wouldn’t appreciate
the charity as much as someone who older does. I have made my products
appropriate in many different ways. One way is the colour scheme. I used bright
colours, which are associated with the beach such as blue and yellow. These are
bright colours that are associated with the sea and the sand. Another way in which
I have made them appropriate for the audience that I have made them for a range
of ages. I haven’t just created my products so they are for young children or for
older people. I have added designs from all generations and what all generations
would appreciate. For example the membership form proves this as it has a lot of
text on and information, which is for the older generation reading the membership
form. But I have used a cartoon like design for the ‘Join Us’ this is a younger
generation element to my work. I have given my products a beach theme to them
by including images of the beach and the colours. This is appropriate as the target
audience take interest in the beach such as surfers so this is an important aspect
that is appropriate. Where merch is concerned I have created a rang of male and
female clothing products and even unisex products so there is something
appropriate for everyone in the target audience bracket male and female. I
included surfing equipment because one of the target audience is surfers so I
wanted to design merch specifically for them.
Compare and contrast your original intentionswith theoutcomes
you arrived at.
My original intentions were very much similar as my outcomes. My ideas that I had
at the beginning of my production I really liked so I stuck with them and only
tweaked them slightly. My intentions at the beginning were to create a series of
products that represented and supported the campaign that I came up with ‘Life’s
a beach not a bin.’
My logo was one of my products that the outcome was a lot different than what I
had in my originally. Originally I wanted to include an image of a surfer and text.
This was so I had the best of both worlds. It didn’t end up like this though as after I
created my first logo of the surfer with the text in a circle. I realised that I did not
like this idea. I then changed it multiple times until I edited the logo and discarded
of the graphics and it looked better with just text. I took inspiration from an
already existing logo for a surf shop and the text I used for inspiration in this. The
3. outcome that I arrived at for this is a circle with a SAS in the middle. I used the
original colours but the text worked better than having a graphic. Which I thought
was better personally.
My membership form and campaign poster were really easy for me. As my
intentions that I originally thought of and planned are what I stuck with
throughout then I recreated the idea and made it real. I tweaked bits the ideas so
changed where the text went and added more images than planned and
rearranged the layout. But I did stick to my main ideas, which made it really simple
for me. I felt like stick to my layout design and initial intentions created sense of
organisation for me when creating the work. I definitely needed to tweak bits for it
to turn out as good as it did turn out.
My original intentions for the merchandise were very plain and simple. So I was
thinking more t-shirts, hoodies and stickers. But then I branched out and looked at
different pieces of surfing equipment that I could make into merch and I found that
I could include merch such as wetsuits and board fins, which give my merch more a
variety. The contrast between my initial ideas then what the outcome was is a more
technical contrast as it took more time to create that more different pieces of
merchandise. Initially I was going to use just the logo then I went on to use
different colours that fitted in with the colour scheme and showed the logo in
different ways so the outcome was that I had different designs which made a very
positive and unique contrast overall.
How effectivearethe techniquesyou haveused?
I used many techniques for my work. I used techniques in different ways as well
because I didn’t just use techniques with the production of the different products
but I used techniques in the texts, images, themes, designs and merch products. I
constantly used different techniques to create a really strong campaign. I think
what I used was effective as each technique has an individual purpose.
In production I needed to use techniques on the program photoshop to create the
beach looking like it had litter on. I needed to add the litter because it wasn’t there
when I got the stock image. With this I had to use the smudge tool and apply the
litter and smudge it into the sand to make it look like it was buried into the sand I
also used the clone tool to clone parts of the sand and put around the litter that I
added to make them look like they were buried. I needed to also change the
colouring to make them dull so I used the colour match tool in adjustments of
image bar. The techniques I used here in production were really effective as I
created a strong picture of a beach with litter on that I built from scratch. This is
what I intended to do and this technique was very effective into making it look very
realistic.
With the text I used a lot of persuasive words such as “join us” “Don’t let it be you” I
wanted to sound like I was talking to the public personally through the campaign
poster, membership form and merchandise. So I used the technique of persuasive
and strong words. This is effective as it makes my products speak personally to the
public by using words like ‘you’ so I did this purposely to create this effect.
I was careful when I picked the images and I used a technique of creating my
images to look very bright happy and positive. Which is effective because by using
this technique on the images people are going to attracted to them straight away
on the membership form and think something positive in hope they will then read
and join. I carefully picked interesting and teamwork pictures to demonstrate how
4. much fun and support SAS have. I believe this is a technique to get people to join
the SAS because I could of just found any pictures and used them but instead I just
used specific ones.
I wanted to create sea theme throughout this, as this technique was effective with
the target audience who obviously took interested in the sea. That is why I used
that technique to get the interested from the public when I created each product.
Following this I used techniques in designs to make them bold and stand out
especially on the membership form. Creating small photos around the front of the
membership form was a technique I used to make the page look like a holiday
brochure. In holiday brochures you see images like that. So I made them to look like
snapshots that have been taken from holiday. The beach is associated with holidays
This is effective because I carefully thought about this to create this holiday effect
which will attract public that like to vacate at the beach not just live there. This
technique was effective for gaining supporters that live in the city I don’t visit the
beach that often.
Is the content effective?
Overall I think the content of my work is effective. I deigned a campaign that
focussed around the beach. After looking at the SAS already existing campaigns. I
decided to focus the content of my campaign on beaches which is why I came up
with the slogan "life's a beach not a bin" It is effective as it is something new which
has not been done yet. They do beach cleans but they don't actually have beach
litter campaign that I thought would be really effective so beach litter is cut down.
When applying the content to my work I applied the most content in my campaign
poster and merch actually specifically about the beach litter. I applied this in the
slogan and I also included a fact specifically about beach litter and this is really
effective content because it's shocking the public and making them realise how big
the problem is through facts and figures. Which is shown most effective. My content
is also included in the membership form. This content isn't especially about beach
litter but includes content about the actually charity SAS and I made sure I
included this all on my membership form because it's a gateway into the charity.
This is effective because it's a way of getting the public to join the charity.
Especially on the membership form that's why I included content about the charity
on this product as it would prove most affective on this product rather than having
it on the merchandise or the campaign poster. The content on my merchandise is
less effective as I couldn't include as much as I would the campaign poster or the
membership form. So it serves a less effective purpose. This is also the same with
the logo. I still tried to include text about the beach litter and the SAS but I couldn't
include that much text so it was most graphics, which are not that effective.
What impact doyou thinkyour advertising campaign willhaveon
the public?
I think my advertising campaign has a really strong impact on the public. Before
production I studied already existing campaigns such as the no more waves
campaigns that were to do with SAS. They created very shocking and powerful
campaigns where you can see contrasts and what would happen in the future.
Personally having a campaign that is shocking and the pictures were shocking
5. grabbed my attention a lot more. So I believed that when creating my advertising
campaign I wanted to use this shock factor so it grabbed attention and had an
impact on the public like it did with me. So with my advertising campaign I got to
use this very strongly. So I created this very contrasting beach and I think this will
have a strong impact on the public as it shows what a beach looks like with litter
and without litter and I made the littered beach really dull and horrible and the
clean beach really sunny and full of people surfing. This has the impact that it is a
more positive aspect if the public keep the beach clean, as it looks a lot nicer. I then
put a shocking fact on the front of the poster to make people understand just how
much litter that the public makes. This will impact the public, as they will then
think about it will become a realisation to just how much of the litter is actually
from them. Hopefully this will make them stop littering beaches.
What arethe technical and aesthetic qualitiesof your work?
My work does include a lot of technical qualities. Mainly in the logo, membership
form and the campaign poster as I used photoshop to mainly design these aspects
from scratch. My merchandise was a bit easier to produce and not many technical
aspects went into it however this part has more aesthetic qualities.
Logo- my logo I used photoshop to design and this includes some technical qualities
to make it look like it does. One of the main technical qualities of my logo was the S
A S in the middle of my logo. I created this so the last S was turned the other way
around. This was a technical quality because I had to create three separate text
boxes for each letter. Then I had to flip the last S around in the free transform tool.
This technical quality also has aesthetic qualities because it made the logo look a
lot more unique and interesting. It represents the waves. I wrapped the two S’s
around the A to create a layering effect. This is an aesthetic quality because it
makes it look interesting which is important in this piece of work. Other aesthetic
qualities are the black stroke outline. This really makes the SAS in the logo stand
out. It creates a soft stroke almost cartoony, which I like because it looks fun. One of
the aesthetic qualities of the logo is how it looks fun. I used different shades of blue
to represent the sea and this make it looks positive.
Campaign Poster- The campaign poster included a lot of technical qualities to get
to the outcome and to make up to the standard that I wanted it. This was harder to
complete than the membership form as it included a lot more technical work,
which are the qualities that made the finished outcome. The rubbish was big
technical quality because I had to add the rubbish to the sand it wasn’t already
there. I had to get the rubbish from images of goggle images and I had to take
away the background and I used the magic wand tool to do this. I then as I said
previously had to use the smudge tool and the clone tool to mould the rubbish into
the sand and resize it to make it look like the part of the picture. This was hard
because it was very bright and it was fake looking so I had to change the coloring
and I used the match colour tool. This allowed the rubbish to blend in with the sand
and look realistic. It was hard to do but overall it does look good and I think I have
blended it well. The rubbish near the sea is a bit more not as clear as the rubbish in
the sand but this was when I first started to blend and I was not that confident with
doing it but by the end I knew exactly what I was doing.
6. I had two sides to the beach a positive side where there was no rubbish and
everything was sunny and there were people on the beach and then a horrible side
with rubbish and it was really dull. This was both a technical and aesthetic quality
because it was technically challenging to make and the look of this is important to
my campaign poster, one of the qualities was changing the lighting on each side. I
used the brightness tool to do this. This gave the different sides different moods to. I
am really happy with how it turned out. I think the aesthetic quality is really strong
as personally I think the outcome looks really good and is up to a high standard.
The rubbish on the book looks really well put together and I am really proud about
this on my work. I think this is my favorite part of my work. Personally I think the
text also looks really well put together with the poster. I used a clear font
"REVOLUTION" to make this slogan and the text all clear. This looks really good
because it stands out and I got inspiration for the layout of the text from the
campaign "some people are get, get over it." I look how it is just block bold writing.
Gives my campaign poster a powerful look.
Membership form- my membership form included a lot of technical qualities to get
it to the standard that I wanted to get it at. I chose to create my membership form
on Photoshop that In Design because I personally thought Photoshop had better
technical qualities itself to work with. One of the main technical qualities of my
membership form was the picture square on the front of the form. I have already
explained the purpose of these and what I used them for. They have aesthetic
qualities instead as well as technical. I had to design how they were going to go on
the page and how big to have them. They I lined them so they were equal on both
sides. This was a technical quality because I had to use the rulers around the side of
the page to line the image squares up. It was also an aesthetic quality because they
make the membership form look like a fun postcard which links with the beach and
the sea. It makes the SAS look like something fun to join. I used the opacity tool a
lot on the background text boxes because it made the colors look less harsh against
each other. This is a strong aesthetic quality because I wanted to make the
membership form look colorful and give it a layered look. This is particularly
strong on the form page. As I used the campaign poster as a background and faded
it out to make it easier to read the text. I took inspiration from this already existing
SAS form then I layered text boxes, which were colorful and changed the opacity to
64% so you were able to see the campaign poster slighting behind. This gave a very
interesting look and I personally think that is was a very strong look for my
membership form. It gave it a unique look, which I wanted.
Technical Qualities- placing the pictures, opacity, text boxes,
Aesthetic- colors, pictures, the boxes
Merchandise- The merchandise does not really have many qualities to it. It was the
easiest product out of the four to make through production. The logo I had to
upload it on to red bubble to be able to create the t-shirts. This was a technical
quality because I had to upload it as a PNG file, which I don't normally do. Then
edit the colors and move the logo to the right place on the t-shirt but this ties in
with aesthetic qualities because I chose to have the logo on the front of the t-shirt &
hoodies because it looked the best. It suited the merch really well. I think this is a
strong quality. Another strong quality of the merch is the cushions. I created two
cushions in the color theme yellow and blue. This is a really strong aesthetic quality
7. of my merchandise. This is my favorite piece. The colors look really well together
and in real life I think these could be really popular with the public.
